This does not have a maximum f2.8. It states right on the lens that the maximum is f2.8 to 5.2!
It is only valid to say a lens has a maximum apperature of 2.8 if it maintains that maximum apperature accross the entire zoom range. The maximum of this camera at full zoom is f5.2 (not f2.8).
When you own a real DSLR, the difference in a 24-85mm f2.8 and a 24-85mm f2.8-f5 is double the price!
Also the change is not linear, expect it to be f5 when you are around ~75mm, or f4 at ~35mm.
maximum f2.8 and no interchangeable lens doesn't make this a prosumer camera. A prosumer camera would be won of the Canon Rebel's. I own Sony's Ax100 and it was a prosumer camera for its day but this isn't a prosumer camera. Its got some neat tricks but I noticed a lot of artifacts in the photo's and the light saturation was poor. Take a look at that deer fur. No definition. Its washed out. The HD video was really poor with frame drops. A flip shoots better 720p.
Wow Dave. I am getting this thing ASAP. I bought a digital camera a couple years ago, Sony Cybershot DSC-W290 and it sucks compared to this thing. I got it for $250 then, 5x optical zoom, 720p video recording but no zoom while recording!!! I gonna sell the W290 and get this! Amazing price and for me the audio quality sounded adequate. Not great but good enough.
stopped watching as i saw the back LCD panel flip up... SONY WHY the flip up and flip down on your LCD panels... Canon 60D got it write with the flip sideways
Prosumer DSLR?!!! It's not a DSLR, very far from it. I suggest that you do your research first before hand. I don't think you even know what DSLR means... it could have been a good review but it's misleading.
I highly doubt that professional, even for a mid level photographer would buy this. it's lacking the interchangeable lens, no external flash, no sync port, list can go on and on.
This camera is good for entry level photography enthusiasts.
This isn't a DSLR at all, it doesn't have a mirror box. Also, it isn't prosumer, it's a consumer camera with a mega zoom. Prosumer would be something like a Canon 1100D or a 600D; they have professional features such as larger sensors, 100% viewfinder coverage and interchangeable lenses, while also being cheap and easy to use. This is just a bridge camera - made for consumers to look like a DSLR, but lacking any DSLR features except the ergonomics.
I really want a DSLR because of the picture quality etc., but ALL of them are so ugly!!... I can't stand them... They are bold, heavy, ugly, black etc. Why can't at least some good DSLR be white or silver coloured for once? or an innovative design?...
@renegade8164 the reason is, most dslrs or late teens or middle aged adults, and they dont want coloured cameras, pentax do make coloured ones but its guna looks stupid when you put a black lens on the front.
These type of cams take lovely pictures, but in my opinion i think they are mostly targeted for professionals. Most people including myself don't like to carry around big gadgets.
@linkinpain i dont think these are targeted for professionals these are probably for the mid range user who wants something better than a point and shoot but doesn't want to go through the hassle of new lenses and adding flashes and all that, i personally love my nikon d3100 its a perfect entry level dslr for beginners like my self

The compression in this video do not do the photos justice. Great camera though.

I'd rather buy the a33 from Sony... This isn't a full fledged dlsr/dslt....

Great review Dave.
However this camera isn't an DSLR (digital signal lens reflex) it's what they call a bridge camera.
A bridge camera is a point and shoot (tends to have a few more manual mode then a regular point and shoot) with a superzoom lens.
Sonys dslr range are the alpha series, and the models begin with an a, ie, Sony a850 :)

Very nice. Well worth the money, but I would like a viewer that does move left and right too. The pictures and video are excellent.
Nice camera! Thanks, Dave.
