I love Kathy Mattea & she does a good job on this song, but I don't think any cover version can match Nanci's haunting interpretation of her own song (especially with her introduction about Woolworth stores - LOL).
Fantastic!! We just saw her Saturday night at the IBMA Fanfest in Nashville where she was proud to claim she had the lowest voice of all the other singers ;-)
Thanks for posting this - we could only do Sunday at the festival so we missed her. :( I did see her last time she was there, which I guess was 15 years ago.
Quite simply one of the best songs of all time. The author, Nanci Griffith, does a great version also.

I've been searching for this song for more than 20 years! I heard it on the radio a couple of times. Back in the '80's I think. Love it!

Kathy has a voice like hot chocolate on a cold winter night. This is my favorite Nanci Griffith song.........they both sing it beautifully.

Kathy's right up close to Nanci's BBC pinnacle with this. Compelling!
