The Indians got fucked by the US, the nations are the shitest, most isolated land that no-one else wanted, the intention was never to preserve their way of life, but to isolate them so they would be forced to assimilate into US culture. There's always been a policy of assimilation, the Indians have been forced, intimidated or persuaded to accept European culture from the start. They are poor and isolated, but if they left the reservation, they would end up in the ghetto.

Always interestedin what you have to say but your opinions on native american problems is a swing and a miss. i grew up on a reservation that is finally starting to get their act together because they got casinos. na's arent stuck in poverty because they are trying to hold on to the past, remain isolated and sell handwork. the social,econ,psych problems are so vast and systemic its almost impossible for anyone to describe the situation without acting the "poster boy of privaleged stupidity"

Poverty on indian reservations is a complex issue that isn't caused by a desire to remain separate from the rest of american society. The Dept. of indian affairs has "lost" over 40 Billion dollars that were supposed to go to various indian nations. When the courts ordered them to produce the documentation of where the money went the warehouse it was stored in burned down. This wasn't 500 years ago or even 50 years ago. The feds never stopped screwing the indians.

You have the Navajo Nation confused with other reservations. The Navajo Nation does not allow casinos on there land because they think it will diminish there ideals. The reason most Native Americans do not want to join the rest of the US is that they do not trust the government. Another reason they stay on the reservation is because it is free land and most of them are to poor to leave. The story of the Native Americans is a sad one.

What you said about the Reservation is Very true around. You would think the money they make from casinos, would go towards making better towns. The Reservation around here are like Isolated ghetto's. These people who live there would be way better off in modern city's.
