I had a black salamander with yellow spots when I was growing up in Illinois. He got real excited when you gave him a worm! However, we only had him a few days. My mom insisted we keep him in the garage, and about a week after we got him I think the neighbor's cat got into our garage and caught the salamander.

never touch or hold the salamanders because they will absorb the salts in our skin and that can harm the salamander!

Brief handling is OK as long as you have clean hands (no chemicals/bug repellent/sanitizers, etc). I've done presentations with salamanders and they do fine as long as you limit the handling time. Actually, if you handle them too long they will desiccate or overheat before your body salts have any effect on them.
