Did they bollocks! They paid the other European powers to do the fighting and only landed an army on the Continent in 1808. What the Tsar thought of the British contribution to the war effort (100,000+ Russian soldiers died from cold alone in 1812) isn't printable! As for Waterloo, most of Wellington's army was German, as of course was the entire Prussian army under Blucher. It was Waterloo that paved the way for German unification under Prussia and the downfall of the British Empire.
That doesn't mean that the British troops weren't good soldiers, but they were less manoeuverable than the French and less resistant than the Russians. Wellington considered that 1 British unit could equal 1 French unit, but said that 2 French units would beat 2 British and so on, particularly for cavalry. The UK only truly developed an excellent army a century later with the creation of elite units such as the SAS. Of course, the Royal navy was the best sea force in the 1800s.

Also the British empire fell 150 years later (as did the German and French empires) due to the cost of helping to win two WWs.
Bernard Cornwell, whose version of Waterloo doesn't include the Prussians turning up in the afternoon as does the historical record defended by, say, the late David Chandler, makes the point that the Spanish guerrillas killed five times as many French soldiers. Other historians have raised the point that Wellington should have been able to cross Spain in two years, not five. Again, good soldiers, mediocre leaders. The Tsar was flattering an ally in 1815 (he'd said as much to Napoleon)
And like I said, Waterloo ensured Prussian domination of the future German Empire or Second Reich. German expansion later in the 1800s clashed with the French, British and Russian Empires who formed the Triple Entente and ultimately collapsed during 1914-1918 and during 1940-1945 and after from the political, social and economic strain of WWI and WWII. Then when he finally did agree to fight, most of his army ran away, leaving 20,000 British troops to take on 50,000 French. The Spanish were able to tie up French soldiers, but they werent able to decisively defeat them in battle without Wellington.
I was referring to the the guerillas, not the regular Spanish armies. And unlike Wellington, the French troops were seperated by the geography of Spain, and getting messages safely through mountainous terrain required a minimum escort of at least 2000 men. Wellington was capable of taking the offensive, but his talents were as a defensive general and as a diplomat, not as a great commander or politician (his defeat in 1830 was the worst suffered by the Tories until 1997).
