The officers ensured their safety by disabling the subject quickly. He already broke the law, and refused their clear intentions for him to stop (whether verbal or by knowing he was pursued). If you disrupt a private event (a ball game is not a government sponsored event, it is on private property and the game is corporate) you have to expect the police aren't going to stand around all day while you're being a fool.
