How come you cut a little further away from the second bud rather than close to it? I always read about cutting close to the buds. Also do you have a video regarding pruning a two or three year old vine that looks like the one posted here. Thank you. The video is very clear and easily to understand.
@freqlink The vine in the picture has irrigation and was fertilized 3 times during the summer it was established. If you give the first year vine plenty of water and fertilizer in April, May, and June, it should reach the wire the first year.
Thank you for this video. How far from the main trunk do you let the vine grow in either direction? I set up three posts eight feet apart and planted two vine types in the center. One called reliance is growing into the space of the other vine. Should I cut it?
hey i see your pruning the female but what about the male, when i bought mines i had to buy a male with it because they said the female would not produce fruit without a male within 10ft of it. where are your males at?
The vines in the video are all self fertile varieties. I would suggest you plant a self fertile variety next to the female variety as the male will not produce fruit only pollinate the female vine. A self fertile variety will pollinate itself and also any female variety within 10-30 feet of itself. This will give you two varieties of muscadines instead of one and is a better utilization of trellis space.
well the woman at the nursery said that a a male can pollinate 3 females. since he's not going to bear fruit u think i should buy at least one more??? and whats the name of some self fertile grapes??? ill look into that because my vines are only 3-4 feet long now and i have enough time to add another one to the trellis. and by the way mines happen to be muscadine vines!
some of the more common self fertile varieties would be Carlos and Magnolia(White grape), or Ison and Noble (Black grape) . Carlos is the all around workhouse of the N.C. grape industry as it makes great wine, jelly, juice and eating straight from the vine. Magnolia would also have these attributes. Ison is good for eating or for wine. Noble is not very tasty but is an excellent wine grape for making red wines.

I allow the vines to grow 10 feet in both directions. That gives me a 20 foot long vine with the trunk in the middle.

However, you would prune the male vine the very same way as the female vine.
