Most things that go wrong with vw's are mainly sensors and minor stuff that usually does not affect your daily driving. But i do have to agree the auto trans on vw's tend to be unreliable i had a 1.8t tiptronic trans failed three times then decided to get a 2000 tdi jetta best decision i have ever made :)

? a diesel will make tons of torque, but 200 hp is 200 hp, I am sure if the other car was identical to the diesel jetta, just with a gas engine, it would be alot closer, the TDI might have a snappier "throttle response" because of its greater torque though. But the TDI will always be more efficient because of its ablility to handle drastic A/F ratio changes (lean idle) thats the main advantage of a diesel over gas.

You will see that with lower displacement motors, petrol/gas engines will find more hp, but less tq. In the vast majority of comparisons, when you look at a diesel, you can reverse these effects. Thus, a gas 2.0L vs a diesel 2.0L, both of the same year and built by the same company, with the same model of car, will result in a gas motor that will propel the car to a given point in a given amount of time, resulting in a "faster car."

TDI's keep getting quieter each generation. The 1.9 mk4 were quieter than the previous generation, then the pump duse were quieter yet again. The new mk5 jetta tdi's are extremely quiet and smoke free.

I have a 150HP TDI myself that I've driven modded for over 3 years without any trouble and never much less than 50MPG. You have to consider that the car is a factory 90HP slug, and really doesn't get much better than 40mpg stock.
