I love the song so much; it’s based on Finlandia a Jean Sebelius composition honoring his beloved land of Finland and the struggle for freedom. There are at least 3 versions of this song (be still my Soul is only one), this original was sung in finish . I love this song so much because as a young boy I sang it in English whiles in the 5 the grade choir, ho how I loved to sing. I found the English worlds as inspiring as the Finish children must find it today.

@Fourpennyworth, if this song is just using the tune from the original song by Sibelius, then why does it still have the same name - Finlandia Hymn? If the name was different, I'd be perfectly fine with this version, but since it has the same name, it gives people the impression that the original song was about the things sung in this version, which is not true as Tylran pointed out.

@Hopeapuhuri Finlandia hymn didn't originally have any lyrics. They were written afterwards. Although I do prefer the "original" lyrics over any other, the song itself is "Finlandia hymn" no matter what the actual lyrics are.

Oh no!! What's this?! You've ruined Finlandia with these horrible American overzealous lyrics. Finlandia is about Fiinland, about it's history, it's battles and the victories won in the battle for freedom. It's about the Finnish people, not about God. We did great things ourselves, not because God was there. We are Finns because of those Finnish men who fought and died in horrible wars against an overwhelming enemy. @Tylran You need to do a little more research. The lyrics are not American but German, and as is common with pieces of classical music other words are sung to it. You can prefer your Finnish words. My own British National anthem is sung to a tune used for many other songs. Does that matter? I think not.

That this version mentioned God simply (to me) indicates that the lyricist responded to the yearning beautiy of the melody, and instead of speaking of yearning for freedom, wrote about yearning to be free of grief and pain. The lyrics have been very comforting to me, and the song brings me often to tears.

The idea is totally horiffic. I know the history of the finish people, and one cannot understand the the power of Finlandia without recognizing the history behind. All copies are bad, they do not express the same meaning. They are litterally "worth less" than the original. I used to live in the US. If a scandinavian rewrote the lyrcis of "the Star Spangled Banner" - there would be an outcry. Finlandia and your national anthem reflects the exact opposite emotions.

I am afraid I don't understand. If the lyrics of "Be Still My Soul" are reverent and do not insult anyone, how are they an insult to "Finlandia"? The composer intended the piece as an instrumental one. So whether the lyrics applied deal with an appeal to God for Finland, or for the individual soul, surely both are prayers for help and guidance in a time of trouble?

I would not mind other lyrics being applied to "The Star Spangled Banner", providing they were neither offensive nor nonsense.

@Chrisiant One thing you should know about Finland is that rarely do we speak in public about turning to god or praying. The majority of Finnish population belong to some religious group evangelical-lutherian, orthodox and catholic bein the 3 main ones. Thats why i think this English version sounds completely ridiculous as the Finnish version has no mention about god. It goes without saying that they performed well but as this is in America there was a "must" to add God in the American vers.

My Father came to America in 1917 at the age of 5 with his parents, They both died when he was just 14, so he grew up with relatives in a predominantly Finish neighborhood in Gardner MA.He is now 96 and has asked me to sing this hymn when he passes. I would much rather find a copy in Finish I can record and play for him. I do not speak Finish so I feel having it in Finish is better.
