Is it cruel? She seems too physically perfect for the camera or any other gaze to do her much damage. I think it's more akin to Kubrick's shot of the nymphet daughter in Lolita when James Mason first sets eyes on her. The absence of music makes it more arresting. But the sequence effectively introduces her as the character who is going to trouble all the men in the film with her sexual attractiveness.

I find this to be one of the most unsettling sequences in the history of cinema. I can't think of another scene that better shows the near cruelty possible in the camera's gaze. This sequence doesn't make me think of how beautiful Haydée Politoff is; it makes me uncomfortable in the way it forces the spectator to objectify her body. The editing coupled with the expression on her face and the sudden entrance of the airplane on the soundtrack says it all. One of Rohmer's most Godardian sequences.

Since when does La Collectionneuse--or any of Rohmer's films for that matter--have to do with l'amour fou? His characters intellectualize their relationships far too much to be characterized in such a way.
