10 years ago i attended my grandmothers funeral service with my father who was 55 at the time, after loosing his mom he was pretty upset, we drove home together and me being an Eagles fan put this song on 5mins or so into the drive home. He grew up listening to 50's and 60's music and never really got into anything after that, (until Shania Twain came along!). Right after the song he looked at me with a calm in his eye and asked who was that, all I said was Eagles dad, a truly beautiful song.
I've shed a few tears for Gram while listening to this song. Bernie truly knew Gram -- very talented guy. Gram loved music and lots of girls and escaping reality.
I have to confess - we were in England in 1974 and my twin brother Nigel loved this LP when it came out and I wasn't convinced - I was into Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Pink Floyd and Genesis. As the years have gone by this LP has grown on me so much - thanks Nige.
God this album is awesome, including this song. I was very ill when I was a teenager and ended up in the hospital for an extended period. When I got out of isolation and was well enough to have a roommate I ended up with an elderly gentleman who graciously agreed to let me play my Eagles tapes on my portable tape player, including On the Border. The music really took me away in my mind from how lousy my body was feeling.
what is this? It seems like everyone is thinking of this song at the same time! A great song that brings me to remember the father of friends. If they had any idea I thought so much of their dad and his influence on me.........................
Thanks for posting this, now excuse me as I wipe away the tear.

@basicaa
Is it really certain that he wrote this for gram? Awesome! I've never thought about that
fasterthanbolt 5 days ago
@fasterthanbolt No doubt about it. Gram hung out with these guys during his LA years. Those of us who knew Gram knew this when the album was released

Amazing! I knew they were together in the FBB, but never thought this song was about him. Thanks man! Great info!

great song, the Eagles were truly not the same without Bernie that's for sure!

Great song. Bernie, how do you do it? I would have never thought a 9th chord would fit perfectly in a song about a friend passed on. Bravo.

@raelraven2 That story would make a really great song. I am dead serious; you should write it. That could be Tom T Hall kind of great.

One of the better Eagle tracks. They became boring after Leadon quit, and they left their country roots behind becoming another cliched rock band

Seems the audio is just a shade "hot", just that slight overmodulation.

@RobertJohnM I heard years ago this was a tribute to Jim Croce. I guess I was misinformed.
