  • Love.

  • @caligirl5285 Thanks for that! I was wondering about it..

  • "I would like to say your royal highness who much I admired your father"

So what happened to your marxist principles then you fuckin old bitch!

  • she's gonna haul ass to lollapaloosa!

  • "tonight a great actress has been born", literally how Vanessas birth was announced by Laurance olivier on stage in 1937,wow

  • WHAT A LADY!

  • she was offered to be made a dame and refused because of England's involvement in the war in Cosovo another reason I admire her greatly. she's always magnificent to watch and it's sad the younger generation doesn't learn from her and her daughters as women and actresses

  • isn't she marvelous?

  • LEGEND

  • Uma Thurman looks like shes about to cry

  • @FrankClanton. God you are one vile individual.

  • Great actress, great lady.

  • when i grow up, i wanna be like her!!! :)

  • TO all those who bashing Vanessa because of her politics, remember she spoke the truth about the invasion of Iraq in her bigraphy, and her Documentary "The Palestinian" got her ostracised by Hollywood for daring to criticise the Israelis, she spoke her mind and documented the truth kudos for that at least she didn't kowtow to the bullies who wanted her to retract what she said. Brava!

She at least has ethics and a sense of morality no bound by the dollar sign. A gracious lady.

  • never heard of this award before

(and I'm honored that my parents gave me the name vanessa) :-)

  • Whenever someone asks me who I think the greatest living actor is, I instantly think of Vanessa Redgrave, man or woman! It's just a shame I din't see her in Long Day's Journey Into Night or The Year Of Magical Thinking. It's one thing seeing a great actor on film, but you can't possibly imagine how great they are until you have seen them on stage in a great role.

  • I met her the day she won this :)

  • An amazing actress, an amazing woman.

  • @RichardElden Your comment truly doesn't deserve a response, but that being said, how vile a person you must be to say so. I feel nothing but pity and disdain for you...

  • Gods what grace, what timeless beauty, how humble and genuine. Bravo, Ms. Redgrave, Bravo...

  • Class and beauty at it's best! I want to be like that as I grow older.

  • she was awesome, respect

  • A formidable actress. I think peter hall said it best when he wrote in his memoirs 'Vanessa was always a very special creature'. No other actress has as much depth or screen and stage presence as this entrancing, bewitching talent. Great great actress.

  • she is decrepit idiot

  • @TofikToficTofic Besides your lack of any command of the English language, I wonder at how sad your life must be, that you could speak so callously of a woman with such ability and dignity. I truly pity you and the experiences that could generate such a pathetic creature.

  • @tdhbard2002

    she is crap

  • @TofikToficTofic You are clearly a moronic individual with not only a disregard of the talent Vanessa possesses, but a severe lacking in articulation, an inferiority complex, and far too much time on your hands. Grow up, dick.

  • @meeraseth2010 I think they both realize that Dame Vanessa Redgrave was still in a state of mourning - first she lost a daughter, then her sister and then her brother. I could be wrong about the order but I don't think so. "Life is pain Highness, anyone who says differently is selling something" thats a quote from the Princess Bride.

  • She is class

  • both p william and actress uma thurman look like theyr'e standing for a funeral lol

  • So much elegance in an amazing acceptance speech. Amazing!

  • @caragea2002 i think you have no respect for her ! she's old and she's very happy to receive this that set

  • She is such a classy woman. I love her!

  • What a classy, beautiful, gracious legend who has been through so much. I will have the extreme pleasure of seeing her on Broadway in "Driving Miss Daisy" in Jan. 2011. Cannot wait.

  • There aren't enough awards for Vanessa - she is the classiest and most elegant lady on the planet. . God bless you Vanessa Redgrave.

  • @joannecarroll1

Wow - this acceptance speech must surely spell the start of a new awards ceremony for acceptance speeches!

That was as good as some of her better movies!

  • @jazzx251 - Vanessa's acceptance was absolutely classy and beautiful --no one could outdo her

  • I had the honor of seeing Vanessa Redgrave three times on stage: Orpheus Descending (1989), Long Days Journey into Night (2003 - Tony Winner Best Actress) - both Broadway, and in Song at Twilight with her brother Corin in 2000 in London. A living legend on stage, film and TV.

  • @ajb1776 I envy you soooo much! I am only 20, but after watching Atonement I had to know who the beautiful old woman with piercing eyes that moved me to tears was! I discovered her name was Vanessa checked out some of her material and after watchin her performance in Isadora - I am convinced she is the greatest living actress on the planet today. I long to see her live, but im still waiting! I live in London btw - you americans are bastards! Get all all the best stars regularly on broadway! :)

  • Vanessa Redgrave is a genius, somebody who through her art has made our lives be better...

  • Breaks my heart. I've loved her in so many wonderful parts.

  • So gifted, so classy, so elegant, so dignified - makes me feel proud to be British and Vanessa so deserved this award. How sad she must be feeling having lost her daughter, her brother, and her sister...all within a year.

  • I have seen Vanessa Redgrave on stage 3 times - Orpheus Descending on B'way 1989, Song at Twilight with her brother Corin in 2000, and Long Day's Journey into Night in 2003. She won the Tony for the last one. She was brilliant in every one of them. A true class act. I'm so glad I had the privilege to see her on stage. What a grand experience.

  • @MaggsandJude A car crash? she just lost a daughter. Have some respect!

She is so talented. God Bless her! Love, Jeanne in Manhattan

  • @JuanMacready is this supposed to be funny? if so, its NOT. Have some little respect please.

  • I can only say that she looks stunning for a woman of her age! SHe is beautiful!!

  • @ snieghwena: ever heart of respect? She is a living legend. She is perfection when it comes to acting. She is an idol of mine, thank you very much! If she's not classy, who is?

  • Where was the start of this??????????

  • Anyone knows the name of the song that was played on the short video about Vanessa before this speech?

  • I am enchanted by Vanessa, she's so talented and ultra classy, and one of my idols!

  • Have been very lucky to see her perform on stage many times and totally understand Tennessee Williams' praise of her as the greatest. What I noticed was her emotional depth and clarity, her spontaneity, and most amazingly, her vocal power and diction. Without pushing for it, she was louder and clearer than all the male and female actors on stage. She is simply that gifted. She will always be the greatest, especially now very few people are trained for the theater anymore.

  • @directingsouth I may not agree with her politics or her choice of roles, but the lady is simply gifted and it is a pleasure to listen to her voice. If I were English/British I would be so proud!

  • Bless her. To lose a child is beyond words. My heart goes out to this classy, mega, talented woman. She is unique.

  • A formidable actress. Unlike her peers Judi and Maggie, shes a one-off. Shes a very soulful and mysterious actress, as your never quite sure what her characters are thinking. I think her best performances (e.g Julia) are the ones that reveal the real life Vanessa Redgrave - with her politics and tragedies. Now shes not ALWAYS brillant, but when she gets it right, there is NO ONE better. I would argue with anyone who says she isnt one the greatest actresess of all time. Shes our Marlon Brando

  • Can someone upload when David Puttnam received the Fellowship please?

  • I'm desperate to see this performance but I don't where how I can see it. It isn't availabe on DVD. Do you know where I could find it?

  • Vanessa is a living legend! Have respect folks! She is the master and commander when it comes to cinema, tv and stage! Congrats....

  • @Valapaca Couldn't have said it better myself!

  • @FrankClanton Temper temper, dear! She is simply brilliant! Why the awful language?

  • Saw Vanessa in a play once. Amazing actress who goes an extra mile for her art.

  • It's eccentric for a former Trotskyist candidate in a parliamentary election to be so respectful about members of the royal family. But it's also courageous and full of integrity, as Vanessa says what she thinks. It's always about principle for her and never personalities whatever the cost and inconvenience to herself.

  • eerie connection between uma thurman, vanessa redgrave, and the baftas - Gary Oldman...

uma & gary were married at one point,

vanessa & gary were co-stars in 'prick up your ears',

this was the same film for which gary received a bafta nomination for best leading actor, his highest acting honour so far...i wonder if he was actually approached to honour vanessa in the first place...or had it been uma all along...

  • Hello, that was like 35 years ago. She was merely speaking her mind back then when so few people in the entertainment industry voiced their opinion about political matters. Whether you agreed with her, or not you have to admire her courage that put herself in a possibly unfavorably light in the acting community. I suppose you're still upset at Jane Fonda for her vocal protests of the Vietnam War, or for Sinead O'Connor for tearing up a picture of the Pope on SNL?

    Come on, let it go...

  • She is simply lovely!

  • Pile of pish!

  • She really IS like Ruth Wilcox from Howards End! I just want to put a blanket around her and take her home with me!

  • Vanessa! You didn't mention the Palestine and the struggle of the people of Palestine. You thought it pertinent in all those Equity meetings in the 70's! Hypocrite!

  • @Stephensobo Do grow up, man!

  • Uma and William and Vanessa all look like they could be from the same family - it's rather eerie actually! Uma has something of Diana about her.

  • Love her.

    & her voice.

  • Vanessa an inspiration, Uma was a huge friend of Natacha guess her light was shining upon her and Joely that Bafta night. bravissima Vanessa

  • It would have been nice if Glenda Jackson had presented Vanessa's honour.

Uma's lovely, but I feel like Glenda has always been the woman who was Vanessa's perfect contrast, and absolute equal in integrity and artistry. Vanessa & Glenda both represent something rare in British film acting - they are two homegrown superstars of genius, who evoke something of the English that is primal and poetic.

  • It would have been fascinating to see Elizabeth Tudor 'come home' for just one night to honour her "sweet cousin" Mary Stuart, if only to recreate their eternal drama - "Madame, if your head had matched your heart - I would be the one awaiting death."

    God bless you, Vanessa!

  • Her acceptance speech was way too long. Anyone see it live? Prince William looked like he was about to fall asleep standing up.

    She's still a legend though.

  • Lovely lady. Such dignity. How sad to read some of the above comments which, unfortunately, are indicative of the vile subculture this country now has to suffer.

This lady has class. Something this lot know nothing about.

    Congratulations Vanessa.

  • @kennethjames100 Quite right! She's so talented and stands up for what she believes in. My thoughts are with her particularly at this moment in time with her brother and now sister passing.

  • She 'was' a trotskyist ,and I once had to walk her to a WRP conference . She is indeed a good actress and in that respect she deserves her reward . It is however a shame that she now literally bows to the very institutions she once held as an historical anachronism....such is her journey.

As for the Clantons of this world not only are people like you deluded , your positively dangerous , and may your days be short.

  • What a rude, unnecessary comment for a truly great actress and a great lady who despite her deep grief after having lost her daughter Natasha, she still glows with humanity and humility.

  • you're disgusting

  • im 19 and i dont pay attention to these older actors but now im completely in love with this womans personality..beautiful soul she has

  • this was so emotional...... she really deserves this award!!

  • Vanessa Redgrave does for English acting something that Kate Bush does for music - it's about emotion, it's about poetry and incredible depth and understanding of darkness.

  • I hope that the Redgrave family is doing well. I think that people will continue to be in shock about what happened to Natasha for many years to come (like Princess Diana). It was a very emotional clip and I wish her all of the best.

  • Her speaking voice is as beautifully elegant as ever, though it has deepened over the years. What a lovely tribute she paid to the Prince's parents. For those who don't recall her film roles, check out: Blowup, Morgan!, Camelot, Isadora, Mary Queen of Scots, Bostonians, Julia, Wetherby, Agatha, Ballad of the Sad Cafe. On TV, Playing for Time, Second Serve, If These Walls Could Talk, Gathering Storm, etc. She is an icon of the swinging 1960s and quite simply a legend in her own lifetime.

  • @RodyatheIdiot I totally agree. Although I'm British myself I felt that Carey Mulligan won for that very reason, just for the media to report that the Brits did well this year. When really, I thought Meryl Streep or even Gabourey Sidibe deserved this award more than anyone. And why wasn't Helen Mirren nominated for her role in The Last Station!?

  • @dukeofoven didn't you see her in Julia, in which she was absolutely amazing and won several awards. If anyone deserves this award it's her for just being a role model of great strength, dignity, courage, elegance and poise for young women.

  • i can't think of anyone more perfect for this award

  • and those who did SO MUCH but worth nothing. We saw Marion Cotillard Wins Leading Actress BAFTA in 2008 in a amazing group and now Carey Mulligan wins Leading Actress BAFTA with Merly Streep in the group so what do you think why did it happen? becaz she has some political or reference?

  • She is a legend and politics was the one thing she was sent back but lets give the lady her due respect even it might cost us accepting our own ignorance.

I am sure she must have made Michael Redgrave proud not of this stupid award but with her devotion and intensity of her work.

So Little? I mean are we clear that we are talking about Acting here not checking the amount of weight? Its not kg thing at all there are actors who did SO LITTLE but we all know they are unmatchable...

  • so eloquent and we liked the curtsy.......CLASS !

  • She had a tremendous speech. Very moving.

  • I love her dearly. A most befitting tribute to a very great lady and a genius of an actress. I had the great luck to see Vanessa on stage on several occasions i: "Orpheus Descending", "The Three sisters", "When she danced, "John Gabriel Borgman" etc and she is absolutely extraordinary, the most truthful and magical actress you can imagine and a wonderful and warm human being in person.

  • Only about 65 films over a 50 year period.. nothing to write home about...

  • her speech was amazing, she is a great woman

  • Vanessa is a goddess ! A sublime soul. An angel. I love her more than I can say. She has been my role model for years.

  • Can anyone tell me what music was playing when they showed the montage of her performances?

  • It's " How It Ends " by DeVotchka

You can find it on " Little Miss Sunshine " soundtrack

  • Thank you it was a beautiful song!

  • @luvhard- I agree! That was lovely to watch. Now, compare that to Kristen Stewart's acceptance speech...

  • I like

  • : P

  • What amazing poise and dignity and sheer class this lady has. This was beautiful as is she

  • Oh. What a perfect comment :)
