  • Wow, Watching part of the Live action version you do realize what the Aunt's view was... She was a bitch for selling off and taking some of Seita's possessions without permission. She was justified in the fact that rations were low and Seita was a healthy young man who could've found some way to help the family and not just himself and his sister. The shop keep even warned him to not be so proud... that was the key that could've saved their lives in the long run.

  • The aunt is hot

  • im rooting to the aunt.

  • While I do prefer the animated version of this movie; I have to say that the change they made with the aunt's current situation made her arguments a lot more justified. In this version, you're able to understand the hardships that she has to go through. In a way, both parties are at fault here. The aunt needed to keep Setsu's age and naivety in mind and he needed to find some way that he could help out his aunt. In the anime, she was a lot more flat, cruel for the sake of being cruel.

  • Even she was being very mean to them, do not judge her so harshly. Her husband was killed in a useless war, she has 6 children and an adult to feed and Seita's father is part of the military that she hates so much. Add the fact that Seita does not work at anything and that she and her children spend all day fighting and working for the food. It's easy to say "fuck her" or "I hate this aunt" with your belly full, your country at peace and your home and family intact, but try to be on her place.

  • this movie seems so cuteeee but itsnt it supposed to be really sad, about how they died or something, thats what Wikipedia said... someone explain please?

  • 小さい頃見たとき、おばさんが憎たらしかったけど、

    久々に見たら、おばさんのいっぱいいっぱいが伝わってくる

  • for a moment there i thought it was the voice actors from the anime in a live action version but there voices are different now that i listen them carefully.

  • wow their aunt is such a bitch.

  • For me, I rather died than have to sell my mom's personal possession like kimono, ring or whatsoever just because to have my bitch aunty and her family to eat, then shitting me. .

  • 4:54, OMG MAKINO FROM HANA YORI DANGO<3

  • @ilyxb00

Yeah, the actress name is Inoue Mao, it's the same actress who performs her grand-grand-daugther, that we see in the beginning of the movie, in the modern time(Part 1-1).

  • How could they ruin Grave of the Fireflies with live action??

  • See, the live action version is different than the anime. In the anime the aunt had her husband and only one kid. And she was still rude to Seita and Setsuko. Besides, Seita couldnt go to school because it was bombed, as in nothing left. And I don't think anyone would have wanted to give a teenager a job during that situation.

  • @wolfgurl196 Seita could apply and attend another school, which he didn't want to do. Also, I felt the aunt was fair, Seita was living at his aunts for free, he doesn't work, he doesn't help, he doesn't go to school, he doesn't do anything to contribute. The aunt tried to teach him a lesson, but Seita was too proud and decided to leave. Even after he learned his lesson and knew he couldn't survive, he was too proud to go back. Seita's pride was what killed him and his sister.

  • @LiouTao I see your point, but like I said, it's not like there could be many jobs available to Seita, so how was he supposed to earn money and contribute? Although I do agree that it was Seita's pride that killed him.

  • @wolfgurl196 The point wasn't job or no job, point was to contribute, he coulda helped with other stuff like maintaining the bomb shelter or something, but he just sits home and does nothing. If you got nothing to do, then you find something to do, worst you can do is to sit and do nothing which is exactly what he did.

  • It would be better if setsuko was shorter and chubbier. ! She's a twig here!

  • It was ok I guess.... anime was better

  • I don't feel it reflects the true story line... sort of like how a sequel uses the name of the first movie to leech money from the public on a cheap production.

  • rubbish

  • Y_Y

  • what happend to part one?

  • Anime is better

  • The bitch said it right, "Fuck the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army".

  • omg i thoguth they bought the rice with his mother's money from the bank omg this vid was put up on my birthday 4 years ago

  • omg i thoguth they bought the rice with his mother's money from the bank

  • wtf?@2:23 she said nii-chan which means something like brother if im correct. why the hell did the subs translate it as just seita? i bet this is a fandub >.> this is why i dont like subtitles never know whose doing the translating

  • @iateyursandwiches

she's refering to her brother who is seita. When translating japanese to english, it makes more sense to change a few things. Most people don't actually call out to their brother as "brother", you'd call them by their name

  • @cicada300 i know that. its with any language. but i think it was still weird for them to change it to seita instead of brother i mean we know he's her brother so she's referring to him with that. and yea people don't usually talk like that but its not really that weird either for them to change it....meh i don't see it as necessary is all idk. but i guess saying that the translator was bad as a whole was going to far hehe

  • even when there screaming the Japanese language still sounds beautiful, unlike that of the Chinese or Korean ...

  • @hohohee1 uh...you are watching a movie so they try their best to sound nice and proper, even upon screaming. Chinese and korean can sound nice in their own way as well.

  • Lol look same as a cartoon when they both eat dinner at there room lol

  • I'm so fucking pissed. In the anime and this. It's their mother's ring! Which means it's THEIR rice. The aunt took their rice and starved them. Pisses me off.

  • i'm hating all these comments bad mouthing the aunt. if i were in her position i probably would act the same way. yes, she made a promise with their mother, but they didn't know what was gonna happen, and she is keeping that promise to an extent. also, i do believe that if seita got a job, they wouldn't have ended up where they did. but he is also keeping a promise to his father, to a literal extent. he's young and naive.

  • That aunt looks kind of pretty. In the anime, they make her look ugly.

  • its nice that the brother want to take care of sesuko but I think he can still go to school so they can get rice... the aunt said she would look after the little sister and anyway school is not for the whole day, only for the afternoon...

its seems hard to take care of 2 extra children espeically one is full grown and refuse to contribute...

  • if you look at the aunt she isnt wanting to do this. she has lost her sister and her husband, she is going to be ratty. but she looks like she is hating her self for doing this.

  • @GeorgiaaJane if you mean seita and setsuko's mother, then that's hisako's cousin ((i think))

  • @Tatsumi no the aunt i mean, the one who they went to whos not feeding them that properly, thats their aunt.

  • @GeorgiaaJane that's what i mean. hisako didn't lose a sister, she lost a cousin. hisako and the two children's mother are cousins. they said it in the...3rd or 4th video i believe

  • @Tatsumi no there her sister cause thats why the aunt is there aunt. aunties is mothers or fathers sister so seita and setsuko mum was her sister or sister in law.

  • @GeorgiaaJane i know they call her aunt, but that doesn't mean that they were sisters. for one, when she found out that she died, she didn't care about it as much as she did her husband. if that were me, i'd be crying non-stop about losing my sister. second, in japan they sometimes call the people who are taking care of them uncle or auntie/aunt. i've seen it many times in dramas, films, and anime. third, in part 1-5 it said that hisako and seita's mom were cousins who weren't close before

  • spoiler alert the littel girl dies in end

  • She was so cruel toward the children. But she brings the point, he is prideful and inactive in the wartime. Both sides are at fault: the aunt for being selfish, and Seita for being inactive.

  • @AliaSparrow

The aunt should have made it a point to save that little girl no matter how much she disliked the boy. I dont care how you cut it. Look at that little kid. No way in hell as a grown adult would I let her starve and live in the streets when I had some food and space to share. To me thats the underlying point.

  • @Jaiyeson I know, I said it myself, the aunt is at fault, she at most fault, but it's a fallacy that Seita, sympathetic as he is, to say tha Seita had no fault in it. The aunt could clearly provide more.

  • @AliaSparrow

    agreed

  • @AliaSparrow thir were bomings ever day and death was common

if he died out thir who would look affter her the aunt dosent seem to care

about her so he had to stay alive to take care of her his mother told him

    to keep her safe

  • はぁ?左翼プロパガンダじゃん

  • wow, the brother looks exactly like the anime.

  • this movie shows us how the US gov is criminal

  • みんな必死に生きてたんだね・・・

  • That aunt was being so rude. You don't treat family like that in a time of crisis. u__u Especially when they are children.

  • Fuck this Aunt.

  • rough times make people cruel because at the end of the day people always look after their own kids before someone else's kids

  • i really do not like that aunt. of course, her man died and she wants herself and her children to survive, but still, she had made a promise to se-chan's and seita-kun's mother. she is not allowed to break it, even though it's during war. biatch -.-

  • @LenaSomething I'm glad that someone said that. I agree with you totally! Some woman said that not only Seita and Setsuko lost their parents, so the same is with aunt she was not the only one who lost husband in the war and stayed with big familly to feed so...yeah. No excuse for her no excuse.

  • The aunt here isn't as bad as the one in the anime version. This one really has tried, and I'm sorry for the little girl, but in wartime you eat what you're given and if you don't like it, you go hungry because somebody else will sure as heck eat it. And I understand the kids' anger after they sold their mother's ring and then she's hoarding the rice ... but she's right: when rations end,at least they will have the rice ... for a while anyway ...

  • @MrsNorris55 I agree, the aunt is more frustrated then mean which i thing would be more accurate

  • Omg that fucking aunt is on my last nerve!

  • @KaliMendez15 she was worse in the anime,at least here her arguements makes some sense.

  • @KaliMendez15 you have to understand, she's trying her best to take care of her own family, let alone two other kids. I mean if you had little food would you try to take care of your kids first or the other kids?

  • Hate the aunt!!!!! She is a total bitch!!!! Even if it was hard times that is no excuse to treat members of your own family when they have no place to go! She needs to get a damn grip and realise that they're younger than she is and that they count too!

  • 飯パクルナ

  • Is there a movie??? I am watching the cartoon version of this movie. which is better? I am loving it!

  • see even the aunt have to work hard, so hard and on the payday..tuberous vege..

  • Nowadays, resisting this much pain and suffering from the aunt of a minor like Seita is certainly difficult.

I honour that Seita was doing an incredible job of never yielding to guard his own sister with his might, as if his father died for the country, leaving these quotes behind for him.

Also, I do agree this aunt is someone atrocious and vicious, but it is very common for wartimes, especially when it comes to a very limitated ration. Notice the responsibility she's carrying altogether.

  • just so people know, only the wife is meant to work inside the house. thats their culture, thats why seita didnt help inside, he shouldve been doing something outside, but the steel works and school burnt down and he could'nt help with the fires because he made a promise to look after setsuko. its simple

  • finally somone say/types it

  • this movie is making me hungry lol hungry for white rice xD

  • Seita looks really familiar! I know someone in real life who looks like him but I think I've seen him in another drama:P I think that sometimes he looks a little like Tsukushi's brother from Hana Yori Dango? Except in this one he's playing a more serious role? I don't know :( If not then which drama have I seen him in?! DX

  • Seito just sits around, I mean c'mon he needs to do something to earn his rations of food. At least work and help out. Also the Aunt is going through a worse time . Seito is a burden so i dont blame the aunt.

  • @4nimeGoddess I agree with you but to put blame on the little girl isn't right. That ring was the last thing she had of her mothers and they took it from her.

  • Meh..

  • Even in the anime the aunt still raises the valid point of why Seita doesnt work. The people that would work 10 hour days NEEDED that food just to keep working, he did nothing to earn his rice, and while its sad his mother died and left him and his sister, you have to keep on working and living during a war. You cant just stop!

  • Fuck that bitch, she their aunt and treats them like dogs. Fuck her greedy ass, and if i was there at this time i'd fckn shoot her ass. And it was their mother's ring. Fck her.........Yes he should've work, but leaving his little sis behind? thats how their mother die the first place, because they wasnt together. Then again fck their aunt, she fck up her promise, retarded bitch.

  • Yep, you've really grappled with the moral and philosophical dilemas this film raises. Hurray for you.

  • overacting

  • One thing bothers me...Seito really should have done more than just "sit around all day". I know leaving Setsuke would be hard and all, but in a way he WAS freeloading and it would have been better to help out somewhere.

  • but I guess since he was still a kid he didn't think of it.

but yeah i see your point.

  • 2度 見直すと 左派共産主義者の 『裏切ってでも生きる道(外道)丸出し』名作ですね

  • see what war does to people? even on the enemy side, innocent people still dies.

  • They aren't the enemies in their own eyes. They often think we're just as bad as we think they are, but people don't look at it from their point of view.

But this movie really shows us, doesn't it?

  • I thought the aunt in the anime is a little more selfish and nonchalant than this live action series.

Nanako Matsushima's portrayal of the aunt also makes her a less hateful character.

And I agree to her point about the military.

They get peaceful people to fight, and people die like bugs...

  • Oh you are so right. I have to agree with you on that.

  • @Fuallz The aunt IS a bug.

  • yeah but the anime was way better

  • I am actully on the aunts side, not saying that her actions are right but I understand her and really think the children should get their act together they are not that small and should be more considered and altough the aunt took some rice away for emergencyies which makes sense they have eaten her stuff before too so don't complain! Only stupid is that they ate so much rice in one day,,,,I have the feeling that the people and kids don't really grasp their situation! This is really tragic!

  • Yeh, It was a bit stupid to eat so much rice on that night wasn't it?They should have just ate a bowl and not have seconds :P so they could still have a lot to eat later :(

  • The aunt is giving them low rations...yet in one part shes storing away THEIR RICE...for emergancies....I think they are entitled to eat their own food. Grrr, sometimes i SEE HER POINT...but right now I don't and i feel like slapping her again! its a neutral feeling...

  • In this version, I'm on her side, because she doesn't want to waste the rice all at once, especially when it's such a luxury. But in the anime, the bitch was making huge riceballs for her own children while she complains about the two kids eating the rice that was paid with their OWN mother's kimonos. Fuck That.

  • setsuko was the same as in the original anime movie however

  • I guess in this series it gives more reasons why she was being selfish and mean, because in the movie she only had her husband and daughter.

  • i want to cry already its becoz i know the film and its so touching....it breaks my heart....the anime made me sob right from the beggining...

  • that guy is pretty hot and the little girl is so cute

  • Even though this film was low budget, its pretty good!

  • The aunt was being selfish and unfair, true she's having a rough time, but she made a promise to the two siblings' mother, and if she couldn't keep a promise then she should have never taken seita and setsuko in the first place, Seita is only keeping his father's wishes to protect his mother and sister, and since he failed to protect his mother, he became more protective towards his sister, do you guys really think that if Seita got a job his aunt would take care of Setsuko?

  • And that the aunt would be fairer in giving them food if Seita got a job? I really don't think so.look when Seita got the supplies from the ruins of their house, instead of saving them, the aunt and his children gobbled it all up in a short time, apparently she's good at pinpointing other people's flaws (like Seita's) wherein she can't see hers, even her own daughter (narrator) can see how her mother is transforming into an "Oni" (demon)

  • Yes it's true... but a mother does everything she can to protect her children. It's sad, but when things are that desperate, it doesn't matter anymore.

It's such a sad sad movie...

  • you are thinking about this with a one track mind...she still keeps them in her care because of the promise she made. she is keeping her word...and although seita made a promise to his dad, for the greater good, he should go out and get a job...what does "taking care of setsuko" even entail? just keeping her out of the street and making sure she does not hurt herself basically...it does not mean keeping her entertained all day cause that is totally different.

  • the aunt would probably not take time out of her day to entertain setsuko because she has other things she needs to do...setsuko needs to just be quiet for a while and entertain herself. she does not seem like she would be playing with sharp objects or running out and getting lost; so in reality she really does not need anyone there with her 24/7. she just cries and whines when someone is not doing that for her. my point is, he really could have avoided so many bad things if he had gotten a job

  • @celebrei Plus, it's their mother's ring. She's pretty much stealing from them.

  • @celebrei Seita was being irresponsible, he was supposed to adopt the fatherly figure and work to support his sister. He tried to protect her in a way, but failed to protect her in another.

  • Your the Selfish one hes mom just died and their getting blackmailed + how you know there are any jobbs around all there are infected from the bombing Raids even if they workt im sure they wouldent get any payment cause all of the ones that are infected by the bomb raid needs to survive and im sure if you where in his shoes you would have given up along time ago BUT he could just go to the lake and Fish for fishes that they can eat

  • looks like a fan made film to me :s

  • Well you have very little understanding of the morals and mentalities of this film then dont you? This film shows how hard it was during the war and he is forfilling the promice he made to his farther. In japanise culture the man of the house is highly respected and you dont break a promice to the man. Shows how very little you know really dont it.

  • Seita isn't being selfish, as he keeps his promise to their father in mind, looking after Setsuko with his best ability. Setsuko needs a parental figure, and with the aunt like that, I doubt she'd act as such figure even if Seita went to get a job.

  • Stupid spoiled kid. He should go help firefighting so he could get a share of ration, too!

  • I think Seita is being selfish too...

The Auntie is having a hard time too y'know?

  • I agree, Seita should understand about what's happening with her. She's just a widow trying to keep her family together.

  • COME ON that's no excuse!! The AUNT is the one who's selfish in this whole movie! Seita and his little sister lost their home and both of their parents. Their stupid aunt was the only relative they had, and she doesn't give a damn about them. What's worse that Seita and his sister dies of starvation at the end thanks to their SELFISH aunt!

  • the aunt is one of the greatest bastards in anime.

  • shes so cute....*cries* i hate knowing her fate!

  • so that's what she meant by you killed them...

  • My goodness. This lady. Dx

  • "the military isn't protecting the country!" SHUT UP! I mean... Do you know how much they risk for every1?

  • Yeah. Her own husband died to protect her.

  • Seita needs to get a job...I know he feels obligated to look after his sister but helping out his aunt would help, but she's being all "Nazi-woman" and wont just come out and say "I need you to help out so we can get more food."

  • she did tell them that. but seita said he needed to take care of setsuko and so he sold their mother's ring. but their aunt was being a bitch and decided to keep the rice they got for her family

  • i agree with you pmcmahon. plus, where can he get a job? not too many places to choose from. it's too dangerous too!

  • It's not like Setsuko was all by herself. Ideally the aunt could have looked after Setsuko the way she was looking after her own kids, which would have freed up Seita to get a job.

  • The aunt should be reported to Kempeitai (Japanese equivalent of Gestapo) as being a defeatist!

  • She has 4 kids and that other guy and one of them is sick and then the two other kids. What do you expect?

She's only doing what she can. And since Setsuko and Seita are used to being spoiled (or something like it) so they aren't used to the small rations.

  • KairAngel, first of all the woman repeatedly demonstrated defeatist anti-war attitude throughout the movie. She should have been "re-educated" by the thoguht police!

  • Ooo

  • O well
