Pay has been collapsing for a long time, and now it has gotten worse. When I got out of college (with a science degree) 25 years ago, I got a job making in the low 20Ks. It took until I was 38 years old to pass 30K and another decade later I'm just past 40K. We're promoting young people up above me at work, but they still make less than I do anyway so I don't care. Adjusted for inflation, wages are just down, down, down except for the bankers.
Anybody under 30 is well aware of the reality Mish mentions regarding college students competing with Baby Boomers for entry level jobs. Friends that I have that have graduated post-07 are simply in shell-shock at what they find themselves up against to snare entry-level $30K job. As a friend tells me "It's like the bottom 3 rungs of the career ladder have been sawed off. There's NO WHERE to get a hold in this economy".
