  • what kind of knife is the one shown in the vid?

  • Very informative and respectful towards nature; this video shows what humans, since we became omnivores, have been hunting and butchering meat... For those that disagree with this video have no clue to how much meat is processed globally... *cough* *bleep-tarians*

  • poor rabbit

  • Is it bad that this made me hungry

  • 1:12 to 1:25 = Great coyote call. We have always hung them up on the hooks and pull it off like a deer....method in video is how we do squirrels, but now I'm going to use it on rabbits. There's a video on YT of an old boy using the foot method on squirrels and it looked good too. Thanks

  • Thank you Mr. Rabbit for the knowledge you have given us.

  • Dave I like your videos. But that is one of the worst jobs of cleaning a rabbit I have ever seen.I have been cleaning small game since I was 10 and don't think I ever had to get one down and roll it around in the dirt like that.Hang it's back leg on a tree limb or you hold it for him is better than rubbing it on the ground.

  • ok do you have to cut it in quarters or can you just put it on a stick over a fire?

  • @LukeHarter97 I'm sure you can do that but it'll take a lot longer to cook.

  • So Dave is there a way to use the fat from that animal?

  • At around 9:10 Did you guys see that one piece moving?

  • @tarheel550 that was fucking freaky haha

  • That was messy. There's no reason to clean game with a hatchet unless you lost your knife or are unprepared. Every hit with that hatchet just puts more bone splinters into your meat.

  • i like all you videos but thats not the way to teach someone to clean a rabbit it should not be droped on ground and dirty

  • Can you use the fur for any survival methods?

  • Thats a big rabbit. LoL

  • I knew rabbits screamed, but I never realized that it was that annoying. Very good and informative video, though I'd like if you guys did another one showing how to dress them so the hide is still mostly intact.

  • @propyro85 start at the back legs. Cut the skin from joint to joint from one back leg to the other. Work a little free. Step on the hide and pull it free. Cut off the front paws and head as you get to them.

  • Nice job dispatching the meat. My only question is - Do you skin it different if you are going to save the hide for fur? Thanks for the Great Vid!

  • haha! I said "Thats one fat rabbit", about 10 secs before Dave did! lol

  • Also, what type of chicken(for meat & eggs) do you think is best for raising in the northeast?

  • What breed/type of rabbit is that?

  • omg i will never eat rabbit :( i personal couldnt kill an animal :(

  • @KaitsFate666 yeah I know I feel bad just watching it >.<

  • @Takiado I know.. its sad. but I do understand that its an thing people need. I am a vegetarian. tho.. :p so if you eat meat thats your choise. lol

  • Is it bad that I'm a sandwich while I watch this?

  • much easier to dress them while it's hanging, everything falls out easily.

  • Thank you for posting this, Dave. I know it's hard for a lot of us to watch putting them down, but the animals deserve our respect and humane treatment in all times of their life, including the end. Hopefully this video will help others and myself in appreciating what's on our plate.

  • You pissed off alot of bunny huggers

    Great vids

  • Mmmm dirt flavoured rabbit. Strange way of doing things Dave. Thats not how I gut and skin a rabbit...

  • What's the safe way to handle rabbits in the West Texas part of the country? The darn things have those fleas that can give you the plague. A couple of guys didn't make it after being bit by the fleas. I know there has to be a safe way to skin the critters without having to worry about that happening.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks...

  • Hey! Your videos are really great! But I've got a problem... I can't see blood and can't watch if you kill it but I want to learn it. What should I do? I get really sick if I'm just watching, how could I ever do this? Don't get me wrong, you're videos are great!

  • some people think that the meat they eat everyday grows on trees... no. it has to be killed first

  • im going to do a video on how i clean my rabbits i just started snaring them this morning i can do it in about 2 minutes all you need is a good rapala.

  • That was live action!

  • It's the way of the world. Wanna eat? Something has to die. Even the vegi eaters. Some plant had to be hurt or killed for your salad. Good vid man

  • Great video, helped clarify some issues Ive had with quartering the rabbit. In any case, with this method is that hide still useable? I just ask cause I've been taught to cut from sternum to anus to skin a rabbit to make most use of the hide and I could've seen it wrong but that hide looked a little butchered from the process.

  • Man you should have reshot that, not going to win over tree huggers. lol

  • 9:00 to 9:08 that quartered piece on the right is still moving. I have never seen that with a dead mammal before.

  • @sticknstonesbrkbones just nerves, it happens

  • i didnt even know rabbits squealed...

  • at the end it should say:"no animals were injured while making this video".

  • Damn im hungry...

  • How do you "shuck" a rabbit? I've seen it done once, but wanted your take on it.

  • @campcomp00 I used to butcher lot's of rabbits. You tie back legs up hanging, pull the hide over their body. I quit even using a knife for any of it. Just rip the fur on the legs and between them and pull skin down with just enough pressure without ripping to the head then twist & pull it off where the necks broke & the paws at the elbow removing that with the skin. Then rip the belly & pull innards out breaking the tail & tearing the poop shoot out. Same with game birds except ducks & Geese.

  • damn ive never heard a rabbit scream before

  • the nerves on the bottom right part at 9:08 start acting up

  • THANK YOU! I love vids like this, no beatin' around the bush, just balls to the walls facts on how to get it done! I've dont a few rabbits myself, I just I woulda seen this first! The first time I put one out by hand I hit it too many times in the neck thinking that because it was twitching, it was still alive. A word to the wise, get it in one hit and get it good! I love all your vids, thanks and God Bless!

  • I love these videos. I am hoping to practice this in my future camping trips.

  • To anyone that finds this objectionable: Look online for the videos of where your supermarket meat comes from. Those animals are tortured, sometimes skinned still alive. Now, before you chime in and say "I eat free range animals only," you may wanna look up what farmers are allowed to get away with calling free range. They are still cooped up in a giant factory/barn, but it has no restraining interior walls and is (sometimes) only a quarter exposed to the outdoors. This is a humane clean kill.

  • i raise rabbits. This makes me want to do this on my next camping trip. That was a huge rabbit. I have NZ whites...but yours is bigger than my rabbits. What kind do you raise?

  • That rabbit spent more time in the dirt dead than it did alive, a sloppy job. You wouldn't be happy if your butcher threw your steaks on the floor before he wrapped them up for you. Skinning that way is the way it's shown in books to skin squirrel size mammals, that's no way to skin a rabbit. You should paunch a rabbit first before skinning too, in case you puncture the stomach or intestines and contaminate the meat.

  • Those 26 Dislikes need to Man Up !

  • @BrokenTengu99 26 people know how to skin a rabbit.

  • Their* damn auto correct on my phone hehe

  • Good to see this. The public must know where there burgers come from. Can you eat the organs? Thanks for the vid.

  • @bikenutter1 you can safley eat heart and liver without a whole lot of work.

  • whats rabbit taste like . chicken

  • Dave, when will we see a new season of dual survival?

  • im gonna be starting to hunt rabits and squirels this year, very educational. great video. do on on squirels?

  • how do you keep from getting clawed to death?

  • you see the meat twitching after he quartered it

  • man this makes me really hungry, i want to taste rabbit meat haha

  • that's a really sharp axe. how often do you sharpen it or clean/ perform preventative maintenance to it?

  • When I was a child, that was the way my dad and uncle's,killed wild hare.Nobody ever freaked out over it .What was done was with respect and swiftly.Best meat ever, best of all no leftover's and no Plastic to fill our land fill's.70% of today's population would be in trouble if supermarket's closed for good. Great info.keep up good work Dave blessing's Erik Henry from Florida.God bless the U.S.A.

  • thats some goooood eating there...nice vid

  • Thought it was a great video. Why don't you use smaller knives for the butchering? I know you carry them with you.

  • How long does it take to fully grill that? How long for the legs vs the larger parts?

  • nice looking rabbit, do you guys trap or shoot Hares, I think you call them jack rabbits in the USA ? they are a bit harder to trap here in New Zealand as they dont burrow like rabbits.

  • is there anything that you can use the hide for?

  • did you see the body smoking about 3:24 ?

  • We call the things you were calling back straps inner tenders the backstraps lay along the outside of the back bone. The inner tenders would be like the filet mignons on a deer or cow. a lot of bow hunters carry hand shears to cut limbs with

these are great for taking off the feet of rabbits then when you peel the hide it comes right off. Dave thanks for the great videos. I loved that you showed the whole process. Gwndfm

  • Not sure why he needed that axe, that knife big enough for everything the axe did, and dang near too big for the knife work! Better to have too much than too little, I guess.

  • Very good video on humane killing & processing a rabbit. I have heard that you can eat the brains as well and that is a good source of fat which staves off the rabbit starvation in a survival situation. Just wondering if you make us of the brains and if so how do you prepare it for consumption?

    Thanks

    Nate

  • Dude when they were skining it I was like"damn that's a fat rabit!" and a little after that dave was all like "that's a fat rabit man" and when I heard that I was like "DUUUUUUDE!!! CXCXCX"

  • 2:57 it was steaming.

  • This is far away to be a clean kill....It was cruel...

No i'm not vegan and I hunt as well. Anyway theres am abyss between to sacrifice and cruelty/torture. It doesnt matter what I said, theres will be always persons to label someone that disagree as "hater" or another pejorative adjective.... I reserv myself to put the flames into the trash.

  • @fraja777 I dont think it was cruel. The rabbit was squealling, which kind of made me feel bad for it, but he went out as quick as i've seen em go.

  • @fraja777 I...I have no idea what you just said. "I reserv myself to put the flames into the trash." Are you saying this kill was cruel?

  • @fraja777 You don't always have a gun. This is a far better choice than stabbing the heart or slitting the throat.

  • I was literally a half second away from saying " thats one fat rabbit awesome" right as you said it lol I still have never eaten rabbit and that right there looks like it's gonna be delicious!

  • Dave is there any reason I see most guys leave the head on until after it's been skinned? Can it still be properly bled that way?

  • Thanks. I have never seen them butchered before. I have removed the guts and stuff from a deer and had the butcher do the rest. It was very interesting and now I want some steak.

I got it easier though. Right out of the fridge.

Thanks for the video and keep up the great work.

  • Good video guys. Your always gonna have haters. The man told you what the video was before it started. Grow up. The meat you eat does not grow in them packs at Wal-mart. How many of you haters have put yourself out there and done something like this to try to help others for free. For FREE, did I mention free. Jesus I wish you could whack bunny huggers in the head with a stick.

  • Comment removed

  • @BushcraftScout Excellent ! If I could I would stand at the check out counter with a bigger stick. LMAO

  • @northernpike56 I have killed almost every live rabbit this way for years and it kills them in less than 8 seconds everytime brother.

  • @northernpike56 even if it wasn't all the way dead after the first blow, it didn't feel anything after that first blow either. as sloppy as it was, i think they were showing you how to field dress the rabbit if you were in the wild. the axe head was the least risk tool to cut through the bones then to try and put the knife through them. the last thing you want is an unnecessary cut in the middle of the forest.

  • @northernpike56 the most humane way to kill an animal is to either bash it at the base of the neck and snap the spinal cord or you can shove a knife through its neck in the same spot to sever its spinal cord but whats your reaction when you feel a sharp object on the back of your neck? you move right? So the easiest cleanest way is to bash it

  • oh man, where is the smellovision and tasteometer?!

  • It was a sloppy butchering job but hell as long as the meat wasn't ruined it's all good. Great video Dave from start to finish

  • Looks like chicken.

  • @fraja777 How was this video cruel and unnecessary? He let the viewers know what was going to happen before they did it. The rabbit didn't feel anything the person butchering the rabbit didn't spoil the meat. Please explain or was it cause he killed an animal

  • @fraja777 You say this, but I'm sure you're going to have a meal today that may very well may include meat. And guess what someone killed that meat for you, just because you didn't see it dosen't mean it did happen. Unless you're a vegan, you really have no room to talk. Btw why did you even watch this? If you're are a vegan? this channel isn't geared to non-meat eaters. Dave is both a avid meat eater & hunter. He's about a far as it gets from a vegan or a vegetarian.

  • @fraja777 s rabbit was old and passed prime it was going to be eaten anyway so why not do the deed on camera as a lesson in field craft?

  • @wildernessoutfitters there is no reason to hide the info from someone.... its the truth and if you cant deal with it you better not go out in the woods.... keep it real Dave you help me alot!!

  • @wildernessoutfitters The kill was clean, the rabbit felt no pain in death, and as you say, it was past it's prime and ready to dispatch and use for food. Brilliant video. I now know how to properly dispatch and process rabbit. Thank you. Much respect from the UK.

  • @fraja777 Where do you think meat comes from? Unless you're one of those vegans ( I got a whole different argument for them) or something, then I would suggest you grow a pair bud. Your chicken or beef doesn't isn't born cut up and shrink wrapped. I can also guarantee you that the supermarket stuff isn't treated with half the respect that these guys have shown this rabbit.

Learning cleaning and dressing for wild game is essential for any hunter/fisherman/survivalist.

  • @fraja777 You think that's cruel? You should see a Hawk take a rabbit. We should all go quick as that. Rabbits shut down immediately with such trauma. The real world's obviously to much for you, maybe you shouldn't look outside your cage if you can't handle it. You're sheltered, pampered, fed by others efforts, you're disconnected from your world & woefully unqualified to make intelligent objective observations involving anything not manufactured for your benefit. Sorry excuse for a human being.

  • @fraja777 how were u going to do what they show u on th video if u werent able to stomach it just from watching it?

in which case what was the point of watching it in th first place?

did u think th rabbit would be dead alredy? that aint how it happens when u catch in the woods

  • @fraja777 How are we supposed to humanely kill a rabbit for food if no one shows us how? Do you feel it is also unnecessary for other animals who prey on rabbits to kill and eat them?

  • What knife is that? Similar to the BK-2 but at the same time it is completely different. Does anybody know?

  • Thanks Dave & Jeremy. That was very informative & the cooked meat made me drool a bit.

  • that is one big bladed knife.

  • My mother told me rabbits screamed, and that it was like evil sounding.... I thought she was full of balogne..... I owe her an apology..

  • That is a fat rabbit! There a better way of doing that. I used to help a lady that raised rabbits to sell for meat & we used to dry the hides. Here's a faster & simpler way. After you whack them you hang them up by the hind legs on 2 nails about 6" apart. You cut the hide from 1 back leg to the other & after you cut around the bung hole you cut the front feet off. Then you cut the head off & starting from around the legs you peel the hide off in 1 motion.

  • @tyrannynotever That way you can stretch & dry the hide in 1 piece. Then the rest is the same as in the video.

  • I usually step on their head and pull on the hind legs. Pops right off, then just pull skin off like a sock.

  • if you eat Rabbit everyday for 68 days straight you will get sick- why because it is solid Protien. You have to have fats and some vegatables to go with it to offset. Yes you can do this for a couple of days but be careful. You will get what they call Rabbit Fever and it is deadly. Will kill you. Diareah sets in and your system is whacked and you need medical attention right away. Check it out and see. Mix it up with other small game but you need the fats also. Be good Be safe and wise-

  • i was waiting for dave to say "in a survival situation you would not cut away the anus, it is a muscle too"

  • Why huge rabbit

  • Nice vid. I really enjoy watching this channel. I wish there were more vids like this, and even maybe seeing some animals caught in the many different traps you have shared with us to show their effectiveness. Thanks Dave

  • So much wasted fur. Otherwise nice video!

  • puts a whole new meaning to extra fresh

  • what do you do with the skin?

  • Great vid.

How do you clean your gear in the bush after you have processed an animal? Can you make a vid on that?

    Have a nice day.

  • nice vid, I'd love to go to pathfinder school soon

  • Great video. You ate the heart, but wild game has very little fat. You should do a video on what organs are edible. People have died of rabbit poisoning in times past.

  • I say if you don't like the way he did it then do it your own way(or do video response to show your way.) Myself I grew up around a butcher shop so my way is different however There is NO right or wrong way, just different ways

  • there are many simpler and better ways to processing a rabit...

  • @johnnyeno1 You are correct by saying this, but.......given the fact that it was done in the field with limited tools I think he did a fine job. This method gets the job done and gets food in your belly. Well done boys.

  • Oh gosh that's really terrible

  • After watching this video im happy hunting season opens up this weekend. I want some rabbit right now.

  • I AM SURE DAVE CANTERBURY WILL DIE FROM ATHEROSCLEROSIS ^^

  • TOO MUCH MEAT LEADS TO HEART ATTACK

  • It amazes me that most people prefer to higher an assassin to kill their food for them.

Meat is murder and it taste great!

  • @407ForRent It amazes me of your English.

  • @SSgtJoker Of your English? Grammar Nazi fail!

  • @Ilovetheplatypus I didn't go grammar nazi bro -_- sad you thought that it was my "Best English"

  • @SSgtJoker Best English? Try proper English. The failing grammar Nazi is on a roll!

Also, who are you quoting by putting "best English" in quotation marks?

  • @Ilovetheplatypus *facepalm*

  • @SSgtJoker LOL, what a joke! Get a life.

  • i know this is great knowledge to have and I've done it before but i hate seeing things die=\

  • 9:06 did u see that it was moving O.O it was freekin moving!!!!

  • @MegaJoemen haha ya it was lol you would think with every piece removed it would not be able to still have impulses like that lol

  • @bobmellon I'm Freeken scared for life! man!!!

  • @MegaJoemen 09:25 - not moving anymore. ;)

  • Thanks so much for this vid Dave.

  • @MegaJoemen Did you know that if you cook frog legs without a lid they will jump back out, trying being 6 and seeing that.

  • @omega14j1 yes, i did know that. an....d no..... lets not, and say i did.

  • @MegaJoemen freakish eh?

  • @MegaJoemen O_O I didn't see it before!...... man!... hope it dies before turning into shit

  • i was ready for it to see how its done but when it sqeeked like that i was like ............O.O. thanks for the know how. i geuss im softer than i thought. i suck.

  • By the way...I hear Elmer Fudd is a vindictive s.o.b. so watch your back

  • Hey Dave, great video. Thanks a bunch. I've never hunted wild rabbit myself but have heard that fall is a bad time because of spotted liver disease. Is that true?

  • Good memories. I used to hunt rabbit when I was a kid with my dad. Later, I raised meat rabbits for my young family. Killing was the hard part but once cooked and enjoyed, soon forgotten. Excellent video, thanks.

  • that is one fat rabbit!

  • Dave Canterbury is so boss

  • That was a very humane and quick kill. I respect people who treat their animals with respect. Great video and a thumbs up from me!

  • Can you give an explanatory video on processing a rabbit while being able to save the skin for other uses(rather than cutting it up and throwing it away.)?

  • at 9:10 the quartered meat twitches is that normal for a fresh processed rabbit?

  • @wolfdwood1 Yes any fresh kill can twitch it is normal.

  • I have a question:

If there would some worms in the cadaver, would it be eatable ?

  • Thanks for the upload brother!

    Peace from Germany

  • biggest rabbit i have ever seen

  • using the axe the way he did is just stupid, you don't need to chop anything not even the legs just bend and cut the same with the head just cut the meat and give it a twist. not to mention he almost lost a finger at 7.55

that is one huge rabbit i wish we had them here looks to be the size of a hare.

  • At 9:08 is that meat moving at the bottom right of the log?

  • Funny, i started watch this video just... and ofc the phone rang. Now im back at 08:46 . And now thats what is left of it :P?

  • It must be cold out there. that rabbit's steaming like crazy.

  • Comment removed

  • do you know how many bone splinters you just got from those miss chops with the ax?

  • what knife is he using??

  • knife is to big and dull......

  • Looks like a bunny . . Like the type to not eat

  • hehehe.... furry rabbit balls ;)

really love rabbit, they have tasty meat

  • why would you get rid of the head????!!! that is the best part of the rabbit! the brain has so much fat, while the meat it very lean. i would have eaten the brain as well.

  • fantastic! awesome vid
