I've heard tons of other bands (The Who, Van Halen, Mick Jagger, Martha and the Vandellas) who tried to sing this song......but Mamas and Papas version is definitely #1 because of Cass's beautiful voice.

@joan122559 there is a video by orpheus4u where the sound is rawer/clearer albeit no live footage. It is from the actual live album released in the early 70s. You tube search " orpheus4u dancing in the street " and " orpheus4u i call your name/ introductions (LIVE!) " , the sound is just amazing!

Soy fan d Mama Cass y el grupo... me encanto el video... oye, una vez escuche q en el disco " People like Us" (q según se ,se público en el 74 y dónde se reunieron nuevamente) hay un tema llamado "Pearl " y q está dedicado a Janis Joplin...sabes algo al respecto...!? es q también soy su fan. En este mismo festival mientras Janis canta "Ball & Chain" Cass Elliot la ve con la boca a bierta... Para ese momento Janis cumplia 4 años de muerta...si pudieras decirme este dato, mucho te lo agradecere..

Es verdad...es un documental se comento que muchas veces en las sesiones de grabacion, John le sugeria a Cass que controlase un poco su voz para poder armonizarla con la de Michelle. Muchas gracias por comentar!!

Wow, a striking example of how important the bass is in a song...affects the entire flow.  There are more complicated songs that this one in the playlist.... I'd like to know whether the same bass player messed up on the other songs during this concert?

Actually I think Michelle's contribution in the band's first recording is substantial, but frequently when performing on stage, she could be seen a little blunt or even insecure. I know the media highly bet upon her beauty rather than anything else, so chances are eventually this affected some way. She was nice singer though, but Cass was the real entertainer here. Cheers

Well I did read Michelle's autobiography "California Dreamin'" and she said that she actually did have stage fright sometimes to the point of sickness. And yes, I do agree when you said she's a good singer. A good song to prove it with is "String Man"!

@Karen21242 Oh, that's a pity. In several flicks of the band performing the image is the same, Michelle's big eyes can't belie her fear. But it was a rather different story when in the studio, she gave everything she had. On the other hand, when doin' promotional stuff like photo sessions or performing for her solo efforts she looked very easy, joyful. Did you see the commercial for Bush's impeachment? She was quite angry, haha!
