to the people who advocate spanking, by quoting bible texts, do you take everything that the bible says literally, or just the bits that suit your fancy? like it or not, it is ILLEGAL to spank, and your children can be taken away from you if you do so. Spanking gives children a distorted and hypocritical example - it is often demeaning. LISTENING to your children, and TALKING with them, and SPENDING TIME with them are much better ways to get along with your children.

Why don't you talk and listen to my 16-year-old brother who is in rehab for smoking weed, huffing freon, and taking E? My mom did that, but she NEVER punished him at all. I'm not necessarily talking about spanking, but all forms of punishment. BTW, I'm all for positive/negative reinforcement, but I believe that punishment has it's place, too. I've seen both excessive use and no use, and, trust me, simple spanking ISN'T abuse, at least not in CA. CPA won't take children for spanking, either.

Proverbs 22:15: "Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him."

There's a fine line between SPANKING and BEATING. Spanking in itself isn't child abuse, heck I was spanked when I was little with a flip flop. But if you go overborad try hitting a kid with a dog chain or your own fist, THEN it's beating.

From my own understanding - such as it is - of the text in Hebrew, it's more like, 'Spare the rod, and *hate* the child.'

So when a parent says, 'This is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you....' it takes on a profound new meaning.

Just a thought...

By the way... I'm grateful for every whipping I ever got as a child. I once told my Grandparents, who raised me, Thank you...' I then went on to say, 'If you had not spanked me, I would likely have ended up dead or in prison by now...'

2.People are still allowed to hit defenseless little children and call it discipline- things have not changed since his childhood.

3.People who support spanking can't agree amongst themselves what is and what is not appropriate.

Clean. Funny. My kind of comedy - thank you for blessing me with a much needed laugh. You see, my Daddy died last week - he only had to spank me once. He'd usually shake his head and say, "I'm so disapointed in you." I'd rather him beat me half to death - needless to say, I miss him. :(
