  • Bloody hell, Ingmar Bergmann for children this is! I loved this when I was a nipper, partly because it was so dark and atmospheric.

  • this is the first i've ever seen of this

  • tootickys a he?

  • I love this book.

  • the dislike got a bad case of nostalgia and shot himself

  • I seem to remember that when this aired on Norwegian television, the opening and end credits theme was different. Or is there another version of Moomin animated with puppets?

  • Is it just me or does anyone else think The Lady of the Cold is hot??

  • We grew up on these books. We were lucky to have these european books and television programmes in the uk. It was like magic to us.

  • In the original story it's Moomintroll, not Little My, who wants to give the Squirrel a funeral. Instead, Little My wants to make the squirrel's tail into a muff (i.e. a furry hand warmer!)

  • the lady of the cold is some kind of death angel, isn't she? I suppose this sort of story is one way of frightening little children so they won't wander off in winter & get lost & freeze to death, but it seems it would engender a lifetime of unreasoning paranoia - was this episode based on an actual story by T Jansson, or was it written de novo for the TV series? I suppose northern Europe has its share of creepy supernatural legends, this is just one more - love the Moomintrolls tho -

  • @SupernalOne It's based on Tove Janson's original story, yes. On the page where the squirrel's death is described, it also says that if you find this too depressing, you should skip to a page further on in the book. It turns out that the squirrel is alive again in the spring, and he doesn't remember anything of his death.

  • @hogne

the frozen squirrel undergoes suspended animation then - OK, that's not so bad (tthough still medically unlikely) - and it even has overtones of resurrection, which

  • I wonder why Richard Murdoch refers to Tootiki as a male? Tove Janson based Tootiki on her life partner the artist Tuulikki Pietila. Lovely stop frame annimation though. I hope they never make a CGI version, that would be sacrilege.

  • i think it was a bit harsh that the squirrel died... i only ever saw the animated version as a child and it gave me nightmares, i must say this isnt quite as scary but i can see why people who grew up with it would think it was better. she's more intimidating in the drawn one

  • Way better than the new one. New one is shit. I liked this when I was small.

  • I want to forget what I just watched... The Lady was way too scary for me to handle.. (she's even scarier in this version than in the Japanese animation which left me breathless as a child.) :'(

  • I am looking for episode 15 of this series - Attack of the Hattifatteners. It scared me so much as a kid, I really want to see it again!! Anyone seen episode 15 from this series on here?

  • Poor squirrel D':

  • Beautiful...my favourite animated cartoon as a child in Ireland!

  • poor squirrel

  • too-thickey.

    xD

  • LOOL.. In the norwegian animation Littly My is frozen by the Lady of the Cold and almost dies xD

  • Just to remind you all that this is a Polish animation from Se-ma-for Studio. In my opinion it's far better than the Japanese cartoon because of its spooky feeling.

  • @sirgregh Have you ever seen an episode of the japanese animation featuring the Groke? Nothing could possibly be more terrifying/creepy/spooky than that O.o

  • Actually, this is highly accurate, except on two crucial points. First an formost, as mentioned below, Too-Tikki is not a he but a she, and secondly, Little My was not in favour of the funeral, she wanted to cut of Squirrel's tail and use it to warm her hands.

Moomin IS brutal. And terribly beautiful.

  • @Ellemerr I think Too-Tikki's sex change may be a translation fault. Pretty sure in the original language, he's still male.

  • @Ellemerr *Female!

  • holy shit, she acculy killed that poor thing, and this is going to be a child story? kinda voilent dont you think?

  • very creepy. not really suitable for children. I remember watching this as a kid and would enjoy the episodes but, back then, there wasn't a lot on tv. we only had bbc1 bbc2 and itv. When I got home from school I would watch all the kids programmes, whatever was shown. I always thought the Moomins was a bit creepy though.

  • Haha! Why is Too Ticky called "he"? She is a woman, I read that Tove Jansson modeled her after her life partner!

  • Agree, it's dumb, totiki is a girl..

  • wow, that story is CLASS, poor old squirrel though, and my , that was a marvelous tail hehe.

  • This is beautiful, atmospheric and very 1970s. Richard Murdoch's narration suits the pace of the animation. It is more beautiful than the cartoon version - but they are fun to listen to in Norwegian.

  • nahh, i think i'll pass

  • The music at 3:47 rocks!!!:D Love those vintage synthesizers!

  • this is so creepy! and the ending is very weird... i laughed, though, hahahahaha!

  • Thank you Followthefish! When I was little I had nightmares about this - it has been really good to find out that other people were quite scared by it too! Even the music is spooky! Does anyone else call people they don't like Grokes too?

  • Fantastic. This is so hauting and beautiful. I think this animation is much closer to the spirit of the books than the Japanese version (the alternative "Lady of the Cold is horrible - like some alien!). The narration is a bit clumsy but the imagery and music are really fantastic!

Of course, the original book is even better!

  • I don't really like this version, though it's production of my native country.

  • The music in this is really cool

  • Everything about this Polish version is really cool.. The animated version doesn't have the same mysticism or magic like this does.. I loved this as a child..

  • @azrael666ethereal

I think this depends on which version you grew up with.

Not saying this is bad, but I prefer the drawn version better.

  • @YoshiLicksZelda me too. i have the 4 dvds of it. i think theyre better ones.

  • lol on really i dident no that

  • im from finland. moomins are no joke. we have a big moomin problem on our farm. they breed so quicky and are a nuicence to farmers. the most humane way to deal with a moomin is too kick its face off!!

  • LoL, you got wild imagination :]

  • poor squrrel :/

    killed by his own concern...

    that's really sad

  • a tragic and beautiful tale.

  • I love it!

    More episodes!

  • i love moomin so much!

  • Did the squirrel really die? Or did the horse take him to the vet?

  • love this

  • She is just like the groke! AND THEY ARE BOTH SCARY!

  • this moomin is destroying the cartoon.:(

  • the cartoon was done way later. Tove writes with a subtle whit that is lost in cartoon and this german stop animation, but they are cute.

  • shes more scary on the cartoon!

  • omfg i had nightmares about this for YEARS, its so fucking evil!

  • but arent we all here on youtube watching this and all agreeing how scary it is! isnt that its beauty?!

  • true true! still, so evil !!!

  • hrr!!

  • the ladyof the cold is so damn scary!

  • nice
