  • I would like to add when using fruit the way he is, you actually dont have to add yeast at all, it will form its own in a day or two.

And if all you have is bread yeast, the best way is to wait and let natural yeast do its thing.

  • you forgot to say how much yeast

  • The amount of yeast isnt important.

Even recipies that say "this much"

    you can ignore technically.

    Remember this though:

You need enough to overpower natural yeast.

Yeast doubles in count every hour or so up to the "room" maximum "like fish in aquariums really".

  • wait so after u add the yeast it will after its eaten on the mast for a week turn into the liquid we see on the 2nd vid? and when you say oranges and grapes have natural yeast are u saying adding them to the mash helps or that we can simply use them in place of the yeast packs?

  • @anotherD3MISE

It will look mostly like the original mixture. Adding fruit with yeast will help to speed up the process. If you use all plums, etc. then you probably don't need to add yeast.

  • I've tried the process over and over again, doesn't seem to work. When I read the textbook for instructions, it turns out that the ethanol has to be in an oxygen-free environment, if not it'll turn into ethanoic acid which stinks as hell :/

  • I have a question. Can mango waste can produce a good quality ethanol? What is the ratio of waste used to ethanol production?

  • Yes.

  • I want to use an oil bath to control the temperature for the distillation, what kind of oil would boil at a desirable temperature for the Ethanol? Thanks :)

  • You don;t want the oil itself to boil. You just want the oil to get hot enough to boil the ethanol. I have a brand I use that we get from a chemical supply company. You might be able to use something like cannola oil because it can go to high temps.

  • nature provides everything we need! Even for cars! Awesome!

  • I've tried that several times too some years ago (w/ apples, oranges, potatoes...), but whenever I did so, the mashed fruits became moldy and foul, everytime :( So in the end I simple took some sugar and dissolved it in water, at least that worked

  • I'm hoping the same won't happen to me but it does smell like it's working.

  • Are there any tricks to overcome that, like adding SO2? Or would that also kill the yeast?

  • My late grandpa used to do this in his shed in bottles(valve on top) and make all sorts of brews.

I think he made plum wine or something once but it was more like brandy, stuff was like rocket fuel!

Distillation of alcohol for drinking use is kind of illegal here :( So i wont be atempting it. Its easier to buy grain alcohol if i need it for a solvent and just adjust the conc myself. However this video is useful providing you have a still set up for later.

    So thanks TAC.

  • Yep, but we are not intending to make this for consumption. Just as a useful reagent. Thanks for commenting!

  • No worries, i subbed to NR a while back and this channel was a part of his group so i pretty much check it out every couple of days, not much of a chemist myself, although i have to use some basics every once in a while, i love the videos yourself and the likes of nurdrage put online, so please dont ever neglect it, as some people really appreciate the effort.

Allows me to otherwise check out some reactions and experiments i wouldnt have the chance to do on campus.

    Keep up the good work.

  • please rape and comment this video ^^

  • Nice video. Waiting for next part, but is it legal :)

  • It's not meant for consumption. Ethanol is an important organic solvent and depending on how things go, we might try and use it to run a small engine.

  • Old people from my country use similar method to produce drinkable alkohol called "bimber" ... it taste like shit but it's powerfull :)

Used to think you make it that way.

  • Please do so, even though people may be slighty familiar with processes and experiments in youtube videos, its still really helpful to see experiments and projects atempted.

Sometimes you dont have the time/equipment/finances to try them yourself and having youtube videos available helps from a reference/understanding point.

  • cool beans

  • The hell with chemistry, just brue about a gallon of the stuff and play the withnail and I drinking game.

  • nice :D simply awesome :D 5 stars :D

  • congrats on the subs man :)

    keep it up

  • Nice idea! What is the silvered powder you put in there!? Thanks (sorry for my english)

  • That powder was yeast, more specifically bread and dough yeasts

  • nice =)

ill be looking for the next video =D

    cheers

  • 5* :)

  • 5 stars w00t!

  • Um um um. Gota love that moonshine. You didnt scrump for those pears did you? :P

  • No, lol they;re from a tree I have.

  • 2:15 ratings are disabled so i cant give it 5 stars =$

  • Oops, care to watch again and rate? ;)
