I would not resopnd to the add of Southern Wesleyan University if I were you. They are the worst posible colleage that one can go to. I'm not the only one with this opinion. There are many complaints of this school. I'm a christain, and went there and its a big waste of money. It would be better if you just went to a secular school. They are the biggest bunch of pew sitten hipocrets in the world. their credits hardly even transfer to other schools. the motto christain persecptive is a big joke
Someone help me!! I am looking for one of the other top funk instrumentals at that time...I know that Dennis Coffee Scorpio was one of them. This one by Billy Preston was another...But there was another instrumental that had a similar keyboard sound that Billy is using and was a huge song. I need help from those who are the funk historians...it was about 1970-71 era..
In the words of the maestro"Evening Keith ...how you doing...well on the show today between three and five along came Billy Preston with the one called.....Outer Space".
Back to reality - thanks for the links, haven't actually tried either of 'em yet tbh. There's a chap on the one of the AF youtube sites wanting to know what the acoustic guitar music on AF's "Poets Corner" spot. Any ideas? Have a great Christmas...alright......and that's for sure!! Malcolm
A #1 hit for Billy Preston on the Rhythm & Blues charts. This was the 249th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #2 on the Top 40 charts. Last night, I watched the American Music Awards. Had they existed one year earlier, I feel that this song would have been nominated. I hope that they give their Lifetime Achievement Award to Billy in the future.
Great record - always associate this with the mercurial Alan Freeman and his short lived weekday afternoon show on Radio one. god bless you Fluff - and that's for sure pop pickers!!
I saw him with leon russel at blossom music center in the valley in akron ohio-1972, 17 years old, got soooo high and this song made me swim...hmmm, the girl i was with was hot to boot, lol. great memories..thanks for posting!!
Preston and others around this time put a lot of work into making their own special sound. Great music from one of the Masters ... We get old the music stays young.
@mrcoolguyify It would also say the same thing if you looked it up...(removes sunglasses)...in your Funk and Wagnalls YYYYYEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!
Wrote to BBC Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis who used to play Outta Space as background music in his show, fading it in & out whilst talking. He wrote back with the title and I went straight out and bought it,then played it to death. Thanks for posting.
I was given a Best of the 70s CD after my grandfather passed, and this song was on it. Played it for the first time in my car, and literally played the thing until my ears bled. And I STILL kept playing it! Though he's gone now, long live the Black Beatle (AKA The Fifth Beatle to some folks).
@MrDavidTWalker You're playing on this song? That's so neat! I was in the 9th grade when I first heard this, spring of '72. I loved it then and I love it now.
@MrDavidTWalker Great to hear from the players on these songs. I was a young teen living in Southern Ontario, Canada when I bought the 45. It made the hair stand up on arms when I played it. I'm 50 now, and listening to it just now, it did the same thing. Some music is just timeless.

To all of you at YouTube...Thank you for sending the Email for "The Vigil" by Blue Oyster Cult. I had recorded the song on cassette WAY BACK in 1979!!! THANK YOU!!!
Found this song by accident. I bought the single "I Wrote A Simple Song" in December 1971. Flipped it over---curious as to what "Outa-Space" sounded like. I was mesmerized. It's so perfect I thought it done by computer! I didn't hear this on radio until May 1972...6 months after I bought it. Even "The Bus" came out around April 1972 while I kept jamming to "Outa-Space". Kids at school called this "my" song because that's how they heard it all those months before radio hit it!
Is it possible to find the name/group of a song I heard and recorded in 1979?... {Our lights are dim / our roads are crumbling...down...and we don't know what to do...We're sick and tired and dying to meet you...cause we've bit off more than we can chew..] HELP! Maybe someone out there can help...
@357431smithmr, I think the song you are talking about is 'The Vigil' by the Bue Oyster Cult. At least, that's the song i found when I searched on those lyrics in google :)
To patroleleven: I remember when this song was popular and I had NO idea if the artist was black OR white and, frankly, I could not have cared less. It was (and is) a great instrumental. Geesh, who cares about race when it comes to great music?!
@truthaddict11 , I have. The Moody Blues Threshold label (a yellow comet on dark blue) was always hypnotic to watch, and Canadian experimental pop artist Nash the Slash had a cool skull on his records that was neat to watch rotating.

@ItsDickCheney I heard it on the weather channel too. I was so excited, it's the best song they've played. ( the second best was when they played the Four Seasons by Dvorak in 1995)
