The Console is a window into the other side of os x. While the os is running the GUI hides a LOT of info from the user. Something like that anyway (it relates to all Unix systems) I think anyway, i use windows and Linux :D
i do know what ui is.. :D and technacly that input screen of dos is a userinterface..:) the interface that the user uses. .ha ha.. but thats getting technical./ its not a GUI tho.. or is it ?.. humm.. any hoo thanks for post.. have a good day.. :D week/ year!

no i dont have talk talk... i have virgin media.. :) i dont know how well USB modems go with osx! grr.. but wireless internet is easy AS!

The terminal/console is the Linux equivalent of Windows' Command Prompt.
By the way, neither one is really DOS, but rather just an interface with no UI (User Interface).
