The public schools have completely rewritten history.
In one of the first colonies, the people attempted a commune type arrangement. The people were allowed to take as much as they wanted. The first two years the community was starving. They did away with it and implemented self sufficiency. The colony prospered.
How bout reading from the source of information instead of wallowing in the filth of rewritten history.
Or I suppose you POS believe that the Dems have not had congress since 06?
Errrr..... right... Pilgrims fleeing the socialist King George.... cuz, you know.... all that government run health care they had... and their knife fights and cabins... and stuff. Congratulations St. Louis and St. Charles, this one is all yours.
@MidnightChimes "It's funny. Liberals believe in Darwinism but not 'survival of the fittest'. Conservatives disavow Darwinism but hold that tenet dearest."
Of course, the phrase "survival of the fittest" was actually coined by Herbert Spencer, not Darwin. Spencer invented Social Darwinism. He was one of the laissez-faire advocates, and he opposed the reforms going on around him in the 19th century.
~~> Today BO pardoned the turkeys and said this ~~> "This is what is truely ment by Thanksgiving, its being thankful for what we have and generous to those who have less"...
~~> Akin is pandering to peoples fears of socialism using a day that is supposed to inspire people to be social & charitable & thankful & caring & giving & helping & all the other dirty socialist ways... Poo on you Mr. Akin...
Why isn't the traditional Thanksgiving Dinner a "few kernels of corn on a plate"? And I sure miss those annual "knife fights in cabins"!!! ah- the good old days.
How do we live in a nation that would elect an idiot like this? Guys like this don't actually believe their religious rantings...they use them to justify their championing of greed and manipulate voters into voting for them. And ENOUGH about "the children". They don't give a SHIT about "the children". It just makes a nice heart-tugging statement that gets votes. If they cared about "the children", they wouldn't be so eager to send a generation of them to war to die for nothing.
What a fucking scumbag moron evangelical piece of shit. Socialism in the 17th century? This is the shit that is taught and expected at Fox, and is required of its republican servants.
Right... And gov't wasn't "The master of the people" when they enacted bullshit like the Patriot Act or went to war in Iraq and Afghanistan?? When they rounded up hundreds or thousands of random Muslims and Arab-Americans right after 9/11 and detained them?? Gimme a fucking break, Akin. A little more regulation and spending isn't "making us their servants." This is silly.
Socialism??? Wtf? How was the monarchy of the 1600s in Britain "socialist"? Yeah... it was so "socialist" that the kings of England conquered Ireland to basically turn it into their own corporatist feudal playing ground. Come on, Akin. God, this is laughable.
Besides, weren't the first Pilgrim and Puritan colonies kind of socialist in their own right?
Republicans just don't have the same respect for facts that we do. They just make shit up whenever they want. if the real story doesn't harmonize with their world view, they just make shit up.
And meanwhile, everyday they are working to try to make America exactly like Europe in the 17th & 18th centuries-where a few people have all the wealth and the rest of us fight over the crumbs. A religious theocracy where any wrong religions or sects are brutally suppressed.
is akin saying that 1600s england was socialist? really? o.m.g. i guess we need to rewrite all the history books now.
the real irony is that if the pilgrims had stayed in england, all their descendants would be proteced healthwise by socialist universal healthcare, including dental, optical, & mental health treatments, unlike what they have here in america.
@TheKaos007: not really. there would be a fine for not attending official church of england services. some of the congregation went off to holland. from there, the congregation started to dissipate. some of the remaining ones went off to america.
What a dumbass. Socialism wasn't even thought of until the 18th century. Pilgrims left Europe in the 17th century. I so wish we would elect competent leaders.
Secondly, and this is kind of ironic. When the pilgrims got here, they didnt know shit about how to farm in the US. Many of them starved or nearly starved. And many had to recieve assitance from Native Americans in the form of food or instruction. Assistance we might now think of as Welfare...
So, recap. The pilgrims didnt flee socialism but they did go on a kind of welfare when they got here.
~~> Unbiblical?? What ever happened to breaking bread?? & didn't Jesus feed the masses with 3 fish?? & they killed the indians... Was that growing government the RIGHT way?? Was they're extermination the biblical way of doing things... It really gets my goose when people twist history to thier benifit the put the Jesus stamp on it so any questioning of thier logic turns into a persicution of thier ideals...
Im not gonna say that Jesus promoted socialism...primarily because Jesus predated the formal ideology...although some of what he said sounds very similar.
However, the implication isnt just that socialism is unbiblical...its also the implication that our current system of "capitalism" is "biblical." And only a moron could be led to believe that any interpretation of the bible is an endorsement of the kind of capitalism we have today...
@DcEatsItsYoung ~~> Good way os seeing things both ways... Made me lol... Most times I can't believe that these congress people say these things and keep thier composure... Even funnier the people who defend the nuttyness spread...
The pilgrims fled religious persecution and political oppression. When they came to America to establish the Plymouth Colony, they did so under the requirement that "all profits and benefits that are got by trade, working, fishing, or any other means" were to be placed into the "common stock" of the colony and that "all such persons as are of this colony are to have their provisions out of the common stock." Sort of "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need (socialism).
Yes, they appear to have used communal property. But it's jumping to conclusions to believe this is the reason they had so much trouble. There were a few other factors which may have had a larger influence, such as:
They landed in December. In New England.
And there were other colonies which had significant problems, despite using what we'd consider capitalism, private property, etc. Jamestown was once reduced to using cannibalism to get by.
And regardless what cased Plymouth to suffer, the point is academic. Nobody is saying we should have communal property or a socialist system. Republicans, apparently unwilling to find real problems to complain about, are just scaremongering with imaginary enemies again. Which is sad, because we do have real problems. Unfortunately, from the point of view of a representative, addressing real problems require solutions and sticking your neck out. Far too dangerous. And it's work.
What do the Amish and Mennonites or Pilgrims for that matter have to do with the current state of the Constitution? You do realize America existed long before the United States, right? How come every right-wing buffoon tries to goad me into some argument about the Constitution?
Do you even understand the argument between left and right?
Anarchy vs Totalitarianism and Individualism vs Collectivism
Income taxation is a form of collectivism.
Property taxation is a form of removal of property rights and is also collectivistic.
Sales taxation and TRUE income taxation as defined in the beginning of the US are the only true formats of Constitutional taxation. Taxing LABOR is a form of slavery. Look into indentured servitude and serfdom(% of production>Lord)
@AtSwimTwoBricks "Have you studied the philosophy behind any of this? The real philosophy, not Rand?"
I'd love to see an answer to that question. His philosophy, as much as we've seen, appears to be a 20th century radical interpretation of random ideological bits.
@AtSwimTwoBricks I'm trying so hard to picture income tax as being a form of collectivism. But I just don't see that. I'm trying so hard to understand what that statement means. I read that and I was like, no that does not make sense. Checked the dictionary and realized that it definitely does not make sense.
@AtSwimTwoBricks "Yes, they appear to have used communal property. But it's jumping to conclusions to believe this is the reason they had so much trouble."
It's more than jumping to conclusions, it's a confusion of cause and effect. What they were doing amounted to emergency measures, justified by their dire straits. It didn't cause the very thing it was a reaction to; not unless time machines had been invented.
SOOOOO, what you are arguing is that is was correlative and not causal?
Is that YOUR postulate?
What other parameter had been changed, did they develop a new way of growing food or something? Did they develop the TV Mr Biden and share their problems? LOL
"...They pitched socialism out, they learned that in the early 1620's."
Fuck, these guys tried out and abandoned socialism two hundred years before it existed. Time to pack it up guys, the capitalists have time machines. Either that or they're omnipotent, not sure which is worse.

Love it, I do not like to use morons. Because that is mean to the morons to place maroons in the same category.
Maroons are WILLFULLY ignorant.
Whoopi Goldberg is a Maroon. She thinks that the Japanese did not attack us in WWII.

Did you even listen to the video? Or do you just look at the pretty explanation fricking fool.
He was talking about a colony that almost starved using the commune model, socialism for an idiot like you.
They switched to self sufficiency and they thrived.
See, with MAROONS like you, that do not work or actually LEARN anything stealing from everyone else, the society breaks down.
GET IT? Maroons.

It's funny. Liberals believe in Darwinism but not 'survival of the fittest'. Conservatives disavow Darwinism but hold that tenet dearest.
I'd say, in that sense, that conservatives are as close to the untamed animal as possible. That's not a good or bad thing. It's just THE thing.

A conservative's dream.

Socialism??? Wtf? How was the monarchy of the 1600s in Britain "socialist"? Yeah... it was so "socialist" that the kings of England conquered Ireland to basically turn it into their own corporatist feudal playing ground. Come on, Akin. God, this is laughable.
Besides, weren't the first Pilgrim and Puritan colonies kind of socialist in their own right?
whoo689 1 year ago

What a dumbass. Socialism wasn't even thought of until the 18th century. Pilgrims left Europe in the 17th century. I so wish we would elect competent leaders.
Bear5177 1 year ago
Fled socialism? Riiiigggggggghttt...
First of all, the pilgrims werent the founders.

@AtSwimTwoBricks "the Plymouth Colony"
AtSwimTwoBricks 1 year ago
(continued)
And regardless what cased Plymouth to suffer, the point is academic. Nobody is saying we should have communal property or a socialist system. Republicans, apparently unwilling to find real problems to complain about, are just scaremongering with imaginary enemies again. Which is sad, because we do have real problems. Unfortunately, from the point of view of a representative, addressing real problems require solutions and sticking your neck out. Far too dangerous. And it's work.
AtSwimTwoBricks 1 year ago
@AtSwimTwoBricks
"Nobody is saying we should have communal property or a socialist system."
Really?
What the hell do you think progressive income taxation is?
How about property taxation?
Do you even know what the basic tenets of the Constitution are?
Individual PROPERTY rights.
Labor in exchange for currency is NOT income. Therefore there was NO taxation of labor prior to the 16th amendment.
But folks like you just love to use EMOTIONAL arguments all the time, right?
Never FACTS.
endisnighe 1 year ago
@endisnighe Lol, what? "Maroon?" Oh dear...
What do the Amish and Mennonites or Pilgrims for that matter have to do with the current state of the Constitution? You do realize America existed long before the United States, right? How come every right-wing buffoon tries to goad me into some argument about the Constitution?
ProgressiveAudio 1 year ago

I've got to give you a big WTF on that. Even if everything you said was true, it would still be irrelevant. It doesn't establish your point.
"But folks like you just love to use EMOTIONAL arguments all the time, right?"
Seriously, what the hell? Right now I'm just using confused looks.
AtSwimTwoBricks 1 year ago
@AtSwimTwoBricks
Look into indentured servitude and serfdom(% of production>Lord)
endisnighe 1 year ago
@endisnighe "Do you even understand the argument between left and right?"
Quite well.
"Anarchy vs Totalitarianism and Individualism vs Collectivism"
The arguments are entirely academic, but I know of them.
"Income taxation is a form of collectivism."
Aaaanndd... that's just bizarre crazy stuff.
"Property taxation is a form of removal of property rights and is also collectivistic."
More bizarre crazy stuff. Have you studied the philosophy behind any of this? The real philosophy, not Rand?
AtSwimTwoBricks 1 year ago
@AtSwimTwoBricks "Have you studied the philosophy behind any of this? The real philosophy, not Rand?"
I'd love to see an answer to that question. His philosophy, as much as we've seen, appears to be a 20th century radical interpretation of random ideological bits.
AdamdeMalyns 1 year ago
@AtSwimTwoBricks I'm trying so hard to picture income tax as being a form of collectivism. But I just don't see that. I'm trying so hard to understand what that statement means. I read that and I was like, no that does not make sense. Checked the dictionary and realized that it definitely does not make sense.
jrhd00d84 1 year ago
@AtSwimTwoBricks "Yes, they appear to have used communal property. But it's jumping to conclusions to believe this is the reason they had so much trouble."
It's more than jumping to conclusions, it's a confusion of cause and effect. What they were doing amounted to emergency measures, justified by their dire straits. It didn't cause the very thing it was a reaction to; not unless time machines had been invented.
