  • I prefer the USS Enterprise over the Essex class carrier...

  • 2:12 that guy loves his job

  • many American have fun at arms; instruments to kill people.

It's not TV game. Life is not a plaything.

  • USS Intrepid!!! ;)

  • the name reminds me of bf2

  • flying near the aircraft carrier with that many AA guns is like suicide if you are the enemy

  • Essex Class was the most successful CV design ever... 24 built, no losses, length of service of over 30 years

  • the enterprise was a yourktown class carrier.

the essex class carriers were meant to be battleships hence the hull or bottom of the ship. the name of the ship this carrier replaced was the montana class battleship. the montana was a to be the successor of the iowa class with more armor and more fire power and more precise hits. all the stats that this carrier had here would have been moved up to around 2 or mayber even 1st if im correct

  • USS Franklin, I solute you!

  • the Essex class carriers changed the world. They served well into the seventies, have been everywhere, done everything and always came home.

  • i read one jap aircraft drop 2 at the crack of dawn and there were no kamikaze at that time?

    wikipendia

  • @hlimkb Dude wikipedia thats why it said that, next time try any other websight that doesnt allow people to go on and make changes to documents.

  • @TheJake1005

    uss franklin cv 13,

if u are suspicious about the info u can try us navy archive library,

all these info should be declassified by now

  • Midway is better than this.... dunnnn

  • If only America could make everything else as good as these Aircraft Carriers.-_-

  • @dogfight001 Uhm, battleships, tanks, aircraft... Think we already did that? -.- Maybe something else like world peace instead?

  • Someone needs an anger management.

  • zuizaku u are just jealous of the US ingenious design of their ships i dun care whether u find other ships sexy or not this is still one of the best ship of the WW2

  • HOW many AA guns???holy shit!!!!

  • 68 40mm and it still didn't stop some of our planes.

  • wow.Balls of Steel.

  • wow Walls of Lead....

  • Guess kamikazes count on your spreadsheet.

  • @TheZuikaku

none of your planes ever sunk one of those essex class carriers. in fact its the essexs that killed the japps.

they were strong and nearly unsinkable.

the Japps never made ships so bold, strong and sexy as the essex's

  • I for one would like to test that theory, because Kaga is a rusting hulk at the bottom of the ocean! yeah i dont think so! and it got its ass wooped by obsolete planes! SO OO-FUCKING-RAH JACKHOLE

  • Go die in a fire.

  • @TheZuikaku Only if you're a Mermaid

  • @4everUSNavy

actually a Judy dive bomber nearly sank USS Franklin with 2 550lb bombs but thanks to her well trained engineers and damage control party she limped back home on her own power

  • @TheZuikaku They did after a couple of extra inches

  • @TheZuikaku : Japan was never going to win a war against the US : Japanese pride should be based in post war achievements. It is now a Great nation. During WWII, it was a deluded nation. (No I am not a Yankee).

  • @oosulley

dont listen to that Japp lover.

it had 90*aa guns over all and yet the ships never sunk.

out of 24 ships maid none were sunk.

id like to see the ijn akagi do that.

  • @oosulley 12 × 5 in/38 caliber guns (4 × 2 and 4 x 1) 32 to 72 × 40 mm Bofors cannon (8 to 18 × 4) 55 to 76 × 20 mm Oerlikon cannon

  • 2:13 3:17 chew and gun

  • @oosulley 68 AA gun..wow that alot!!!XD

  • For once these ships and their class relatives the Ticonderoga class deserve to be in the top ten. 24 units completed. They served well against the Empire of Japan and for up to 30 years after wards. Both in Korea and Vietnam. Some were modified into the first angled deck U.S. carriers, some anti-submarine carriers and some became helicopter assault carriers for the Marine corps.carriers. A design that really gave a value for the investment.

  • In fact, the Essex class was built so well, that one in particular, CV-16, wasn't decommissioned until 1991, and it was commisioned in 1943!

  • Essex and Essex-class carriers were worried by Soviet high command very much because they are effective "floatingairports" giving US a dominion of all seas. Carriers have bbeen decisive in winning te Bttle of tlanticagainst Nazi submarines

  • usn lost IIRC 3 carriers

lexington at coral sea in 1942, yorktown at midway 1942, and hornet at santa cruz islands 1942

essex class was better than yorktown class (e.g. enterprise) though. Better damage control and AA systems.

It was also found out that essex was able to launch jet aircraft (in korean war) where as yorktowns' flight decks couldn't.

  • Well, depends what you count as lost. USN's first carrier, USS Langley had extensive damage from Japanese air attacks and was sunk by her escorts afterward, in 1942.

  • The Essex Class Carriers are ok, but theyre nothing compared to the Most Decorated Ship in the US Navy throughtout WWII in the Pacific and I dont even have to mention the name of the ship Im talking about.

  • Enterprise?

  • You got it.

  • @JAGDPANTHER20 No kidding

  • @JAGDPANTHER20 U.S.S ENTERPRISE CVA 6 was a Yorktown class.

  • @JAGDPANTHER20 The Enterprise was a Yorktown class aircraft carrier.

  • @killmoose097 I thought the enterprise, lexington, and yorktown were lexington class carriers

  • @038Spartan Yorktown, Enterprise, Lexington, and Hornet were all Yorktown classes. The Enterprise was the last ship of it's class until it was hit by a Kamikaze in 1945.

  • well to me you do Im 12

  • Ahhh...the good old classic Essex....really made it's mark in the Pacific lol

  • Essex = one of the main reasons we beat the Japaneese :D

  • From all my books and shows that ive seen the enterprise is the grey ghost.

  • From all my books they say Confederate General John singleton Mosby was the grey ghost the Enterprise didnt have near the combat record he had.

  • Yeah I know the Essex class were all around great carriers! But how they did this matrix is pretty lame. Midway class had armoured flight decks, but could not match essex for launches per hour. Yorktown & Big E where smaller and the basic desigh for the Essex class. But wait the Queen Elizabeth class is made the top 10. Good thing they didn't get used in the Pacific. -------If they are basing this on "fighting" ships I still go with Enterprise CV6---- Enterprise vs. Japan--

  • "Yorktown and Big E were smaller"

There's a reason behind that. The Yorktown class was built under the limitations of the Washington Naval Treaty, which set, for the United States, a maximum of 135,000 tons per class of carrier.

  • Sorry, I got my facts mixed up. What I ment to say was the Washington Naval Treaty limited the United States to only have 135,000 tons of carrier all together, and each carrier could only weigh 27,000 tons max

  • just so you know, giving you a thumbs down cuz the a washington naval treaty was void by 1930 and was followed by 2 london naval treaties, which as soon as ww2 break out obviously became void. im not 100% sure but, i think america is no longer restricted in how much naval power we can have. because of nuclear weapons

  • The Washington Naval Treaty was in effect until 1936, THEN we laid down the kneel for Hornet, and started to design the Essex class.

  • DAMN!!!!! 4 me d best carrier of us history is uss enterprise cv-6 SHIT!!!!!!

  • Its a shame, btu out of the 24 Essex class carriers built, only 4 survive today as Museums (Yorktown, Hornet, Lexington and Intrepid) and a 5th as an artificial reef (Oriscany)

  • Well how many carriers do you need as museums whats really fucked up is that besides the charles de gaulle these carriers are more power ful than any other countries in the world. The british carriers are tugboats.

  • The invincible class are too small , I 'll give you that , and the QE class will fill that gap , they are not useless , I mean if it wasn't for the good old HMS Invincible , the Falklands would have been lost. you have to think they were designed to take out Soviet Submarines , so they fill their new found strike and power projection roles pretty well , by yep , they are nothing against the Nimitz class

  • essex class seems to be the longest serving carrier class?

    1942-1991

  • essex class definitely was excellent, much better than Enterprise, even though battle 360 keeps spouting enterprise this, enterprise that XD.

enterprise did win 20 battlestars though, but essex still is A LOT stronger. Essex as better protection, damage control, and AA than yorktowns.

Essex could also launch eventually jet fighters where as yorktown class couldn't (maybe thats why enterprise was scrapped)

  • This Matrix is lousy!! USS Enterprise(Yorktown class) was not even mentioned. It Was the most decoratedship of WWII, contibuted more than the ships in this matrix and when you have a zillion ships at the end of the war only the shiney new ones stay in active service. Enterprise downed 911 enemy planes; her bombers sank 71 ships, and damaged or destroyed 192 more. (and survived the war) Now thats FEAR FACTOR

  • true i think i should be in here but you do have to remember, these could take more damage, hold more planes, and had a larger flight deck. also the enterprise had a poor AA defense. but the enterprise while being that out matched did deserve to become a museum. but no they had to scrap it. hell at one time it was enterprise vs japan.

  • "had poor AA defence"

Do research, The Gray Ghost was upgraded at least twice during WWII.

  • Yah i no, i was just saying that Enterprise did way more than any essex class.

  • It did a lot yes, but its more famous because of its name, much like the British 'Ark Royal' and 'Dreadnaught'.

  • Do research. Confused?. Ok, tell me what carrier was called the Grey Ghost. I hope you are thinking the Hornet. When Hornet left Pearl Harbor in March 1944 she was never at a dock again until June 1945 at Hunters Point. At no time did she have her AA upgraded. Part of the reason is that she was never hit in 59 attacks on her and so never left the war zone. She served with her original 5" guns, 20mm, and 40mm Bofors. Her first upgrade happened in 1952 during her SCB-27A modernization.

  • No, Im sorry to say, but the nickname "The Gray Ghost" belongs to none other than the USS Enterprise (CV-6). She earned this nickname because during the Pacific war, the Japs reported her sunk not once, but THREE times. In fact, just to be clear, Enterprise had 3 nicknames:

    The Big E

    Lucky E

    The Gray Ghost

And are you sure you have the right ship, cause last i checked, USS Hornet (CV-8), was sunk at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.

  • By my description I am describing the one and only Grey Ghost the USS Hornet CV-12 and I know a ton of Hornet veterans, WWII and up, who would question you. The Enterprise was known about the fleet as the Big E and the Hornet as the Grey Ghost because a Hornet had already been sunk and resurrected. The name also pays homage to all the previous Hornets. There is a book titled The Grey Ghost and it is CV-12 not CV-6. Even Enterprise veterans know the difference between the Big E and The Grey Ghost

  • Look, dont blame me, blame the various sites. I have read 4 books, seen 3 television shows, and 3 websites, and at least 1/2 of them mention that the USS Enterprise was called the Gray Ghost because she was reported sunk three times, yet she was repaired and was on the battlefeild again soon after. And if you dont belive me, watch Battle 360, it'll explain the origin of that nickname

  • Lol trust the history channel? Not hardly they called the Hood a battleship and also concentrate running shows that have nothing to do with history like life after man axe men and Ice road fuckers.

  • Well don't forget, a channel's executives want to appeal to as big an audiance as possible, to get more viewers. In this case, it is trying to attract people that like post-apocolyptic scenarios, woodsmen and artic lovers.

  • The Japs reported sinking the Enterprise not 3 but SEVEN times.

  • You might be right, but are you sure? I read somewhere that the Japs reported her sunk THREE times. It wasn't Specific, but I am 90% sure those three times, based on her history, and combat damage, were:

    The Battle of Midway

The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands

When it took a Kamikaze hit on April 11, 1945.

Maybe you're right, but that's what I can figure out.

  • It was Santa Cruz, Eastern Solomon s, Phillipine sea, Leyte gulf, Marianas, they mistook Yorktown for enterprise at midway, and Okinawa.

  • Wait, so are my guesses right, or not? Even though there are only 3.

  • They're right but there are more.

  • Only the Japs called the Enterprise "The Grey Ghost." that's why the vets don't call it "The Grey Ghost."

  • Now that's a logical explanation I can take, for explaining how Enterpise and Hornet share a nickname.

  • they don't share a nickname in my opinion.

  • the enterprise was the best though

  • Yep, because its the most decorated and revered ship of WWII, her awards include:

    20 Battle Stars

    Presidential Unit Citation

    World War II Victory Medal

    Navy Unit Commendation

    American Campain Medal

British Admirality Pennant (The only ship outside the Royal Navy to recieve this award)

    Philippine Liberation Medal

    The list goes on

  • That's just a plain dumb notion

  • and its avenge not revenge

  • The Forrestal had been in service for about 38 years. They are telling unqualified shit!

  • even nimitz has been around for 30 years or so depending on how you count it.

  • There's four Essex class carriers on display today:

Yorktown (CV-10), at Patriot's Point, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

Intrepid (CV-11), in New York City

    Hornet (CV-12), in Alameda, California

Lexington (CV-16), at Corpus Christi, Texas.

  • ive been on the intrepid, its not all that awesome compared to modern day carriers but still cool. its docked at the Hudson river in Manhattan

  • "its docked at the Hudson river in Manhattan" it is now. When did they bring it back from refit? Last year?

It was fun seeing it in the film "National Treasure."

  • the last time i was on it was in october 2001

  • LUL

  • Great vid guys, keep it up!!!!! AIR POWER FTW!!!
