@benzyeap If you do mostly in-town/city driving, get a non-turbo. If you spend most of your time cruising on the interstate, non-turbo. If you live in a rural or hilly area, I suggest the Turbo. My reasoning is that the 940 Turbo is less responsive to take off from a stop due to turbo lag. It also guzzles more fuel when cruising on the interstate, when a turbo isn't necessary. But the turbo helps a great deal with hill climbing and acceleration...once the turbo spools up.
im puttin in a 255 lph in tank high pressure pump today!!!! the old pump was so nasty...and the main pump under neath the car stopped working....gonna be sick!!!!
man, I loved my 940. It's a pretty peppy car considering how heavy it is. I now own an 850 Turbo, which is not nearly as much fun, especially in the snow ;).
well it didnt HAVE to have it done....its just such a better car than it was when i first picked it up. im gettin full 3 in. exhaust put on tomorrow....i think ill make a video....one from a dig and a 1st gear pull from like 3000 rpm. only problem is theres alot of shitty cops where i live
@prozack678 Really? My Mom's '89 740 Turbo had 224k miles when she sold it and she never had any of that work done. "This guy" was me. And yes, I was power braking it. The "click" you hear is me letting off the brake pedal quickly.
oxygen sensor, fuel filter. fuel pump (255lph), revised intake (drop-in,short ram, cold air), full exhaust from the down pipe back( i prefer 3 in.) knock sensor, clean idle air valve, clean throttle body, make sure tps is adjusted correctly, clean intake ports on the head, solid intercooler pipes, adjust kick-down linkage, new transmission mount, new ball joints and tie rod ends, and properly inflated tires.
mine has a fresh headgasket and cylinder head. we all know our volvos got miles...
@prozack678 Wow that's a bucket-load of work! I just had to have the TPS sensor and coolant temp. sensor replace. The RPMs were all over the place. Now it idles at proper RPM, but seems kinda rough. Also has a problem surging during acceleration. Have no clue why. I want to replace the fuel filter. It's due. I only get around 360 miles on 16 or so gallons. Around 22mpg, like I said. My 940 has 96k miles. She has a lot of life left. Just need to get the kinks worked out. AC and heat not working!
@prozack678 What do you mean "replace everything for the engine"? A tune up? I just did a full tuneup myself, replaced the air filter, and dumped in a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. I get 22mpg in mixed driving.
@Intechdude300 Agreed! 940 is a fantastic car. I just bought (5/28/10) a '94 940 Turbo sedan. It needs a little work to get it road worthy, but I'll be sure to post a vid or two of it eventually.
@palebeachbum I hear ya. I actually like many of the Kias and Hyundais. You get a decent car for the money. My 940T got 20mpg freeway after I modded it, so it wasn't very good on gas even though it was a 4 cyl.
Err, no my Optima definitely can't do 13's, lol. My 940T was stock though and it only managed around 20mpg hwy. My Mom's '89 740T got the same mileage.
All auto transmissions shift based on throttle input. The more you lay into the throttle, the longer the tranny holds the gear before shifting, or the sooner it downshifts if you're already moving. Watch the vid again. I didn't release the brake until 0:03 (the click you hear is me releasing the brake) and the car hit 60mph at 0:12. That's 0-60 in 9 sec, right in line with the factory specs.
When I had my little car dealership I had a '93 940 Turbo sedan on the lot that I got up to 112mph, but I chickened out and let off the gas. It had 163k at the time.
my stock 940 turbo does it in 12 seconds haha, yours is faster than mine!

Yep, I was getting 19-21mpg hwy. with my 940T. In comparison, I'm getting up to 34mpg hwy with the Optima and its engine size and power are similar.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
@palebeachbum I don't know about power...I was turning a 13.9 @ 100 in the 940. Don't think the Kia runs 13's! :)

2006.5 Kia Optima LX 5-speed.

@palebeachbum Ouch...bummer dude! :)
seanwilliams78 2 years ago
bro the volvo940 is 5speed auto?
benzyeap 2 years ago
Nope, 4-speed auto with electrontic 4th and locking torque converter.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
Nice but i hate how auto boxes appear to think about whether to let you go fast or not. Manuals ftw.
Btw that was nearer 11.5 seconds, which isn't impressive as my 306 does it in that :P I still miss my old 940 though.

The 740/940 turbos have a smooth, low exhaust tone at lower rpms. When you push them hard, they scream!

Aww sorry, I sold the Volvo.
palebeachbum 2 years ago
whats it top out at?
crazy4eva666 3 years ago
Not sure. Got it up to 110mph and it wasn't anywhere near topped out. I'm curious what the actual top speed is on these 940 Turbos though.

I have a 1993 Volvo 940 Turbo station wagon and it won't do much over 110-115 with 207k miles
