I believe that causes for mental illness has to do with overload of stress, abuse, lack of intimacy in many areas with others, not getting the support and encouragement from people they need, neglect, abandonment, drugs, alcohol, and probably more
some of my family members and myself included have had problems with our thinking and disorders including depression, bipolar, and etc...but, we are all living lives to the fullest, having pleasant moments, good relationships with others, without the stupid chemicals in the brain getting in the way. We all have God to thank for that, He makes things better....just because you have a "mental illness"...that doesn't mean and shouldn't mean that a good quality of life is impossible

It's hell for me. I've had it since I was in my mid teens. Around the time I had it I thought I was a character from a manga name "Luffy" (google it the best manga ever made called "OnePiece" they come out with 20 pages every week. I remember a time when they had a swastika in it too). Then when I was running around the neighborhood I thought I was going to go into Zoro's house (his first crew member).
It was kind of gay how they ended the first part with Zoro being trained by the man he will most likely beat at the end of the manga. I also have a belief that Hitler is greater than Lincoln. In my opinion he did better for humanity than Lincoln and had a better view of Jews than Lincoln had of blacks (if you don't believe me read a book named "Lincolns white dream") Lincoln saw blacks as subhuman while Hilter had a couple of Jews as honorary Aryans.
Hitler even loved Asians. I'm also going to stay away from sex/porn (only have one porn video on my laptop) for my entire life. I will eventually get sterilized. I have already deleted all my porn from my laptop and threw away all my porn collection.

@dorisblake they aren't always negative. those are just the ones that interfere with daily living and thus the person looks for medical attention and those are the cases you hear about.

Outside of a certain damn thing that walks around doing this or that. The this or that that is done is all about voices. There is very little in human history that is sane. I'm not making my point here. I recognize that.
Ok to scientists this is a mental disorder. But is it possible it is a mental disorder but also actual demons that decide to hurt certain individuals?
Ever have a bad trip on hallucinogenic drugs where you feel extreme paranoia?? That's what it feels like to be psychotic, and is the same state of mind a schizophrenic feels. When you compare physical pain to mental pain there is a large gap between the struggle one undertakes to battle sanity. Once you go insane the only way out is suicide. Really depressing stuff. I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy.

I had one tiny episode of this only once so its not scizoprenia but i was dosin off to sleep but still awake and this evil mean sounding (male voice) said ''Just dieeeeee'' and i jumped and wouldn't come out of my blanket for like 5 minutes... and another time i was laying in my bed and somthing behind me said somthing like 'Boo!!' and my heart was racing..but that was it.. but ever since that i got interested in these videos
My son, Shawn, is Schizophrenic and was arrested by Long Beach CA Police June 26th for no apparent reason. Shawn has not been seen anywhere since being taken by the Police. Is he a victim of their"homeless policy." or wandering the streets to be the next victim for "resisting arrest"

My experience with skitzophrenia has been brilliant and I wouldn't change it for the world, I'm one of a kind and infact im scared only of 2 things concerning it. 1.The voices have always been nice and 100% helpfull, its like a have 3 brains and I fear they could change one day turn against me. 2.I'm scared that one day it might cure itself and go away and I would never be myself again and I'd miss it.

Interesting that the voices are always negative: "Kill yourself! Burn things!" Why can't they have positive voices, as in "You're wonderful! Help the poor! Do your dishes!"
These voices and visions are just as real as looking across the room or listening to someone. When someone tells you they hear voices you say well just ignore them or its probably something else or your just crazy. Well it seems like someone is talking to you but you cant here them its almost like you cant do anything about it the voices to you are someone you care and so you listen to them and thats why its very scary and dangerous.
I got pretty pissed off when he said "imaginary voices" imagination is something like a fantasy and that you can control. The first guy was lucky, a lot of people, like me, have parents who refuse to believe it, it took me a lot of courage to tell my mum and all she said was that it was common for people with "big imaginations" and that i'm not aloud to go see a doctor.
@ThrexyX Most, if not all, mental illnesses have some kind of physical evidence that explains part of the disorder. Most of the time it's an imbalance in neurotransmitters of the brain, but these findings aren't enough to explain the diseases in their totality. The scientific consensus at the moment lies with the multiple origin theory, which implicates genetics and environment.

@simsi1616 the problem is in the soul not in the mind or the genes , my family are free from schizophrenia , yet i am plagued by it , its not genetic the voices that your hearing are coming from one of two places, from spirits around you , or from your past lives, expressions from your past lives that are being accessed in your consciousness, it must be understood that the mind is in the soul not in the brain , as is the subconscious
@WINDTALKER300 what you are talking about has absolutely no scientific evidence backing it up, and consequently is useless in providing any solution to the problem. You may as well say that schizophrenia is a problem with the garden gnomes or magical fairies. Makes no sense, sorry. You can believe whatever you want, but when it comes time to treat illnesses, I would rather put my trust in evidence-based medicine as it's the only thing that's ever been proven to work.
@simsi1616 i do have scientific evidence , its just not recorded, my voices have slowed down over 12 years i still hear them yet they have no way near the power they used to have , so ask the question why have they died down so much without the use of pills and medical treatment , people rely on scientific evidence becuase they have no understanding of god and the part each of us play on earth , i dont expect you to believe me , just keep what i say at the back of your mind untill light comes
@WINDTALKER300 Define what you mean by scientific evidence. Can it be verified and tested by an independent party? Do you have a sample size of greater than 1? It is well known in medicine that schizophrenia symptoms diminish in severity over time for many people with or without medication. We many not understand the exact mechanics of it, but that's no reason to just make up supernaturalistic explanations.

@WINDTALKER300 oh, and I forgot to mention that schizophrenia does have a genetic component. The majority of the time it runs in families. Genetics is a very complicated process, and sometimes the disease is recessive, or has partial penetrance.....the matter is complicated even further by the fact that this is a mental disorder and thus harder to identify and diagnose, but like I said, we now know that schizophrenia has a large tendency to run in families.
@simsi1616 if 6 family members all contract schizophrenia then it may be percieved as genetic, yet im the only 1 in 6 close family members that has it so it cannot be truly genetic , even though it can seem that way , your looking to the brain for the answer when the problem is in the soul, schizophrenia is soul unrest , scientists dont know of the soul and how it interacts with the body , so they try to find all the answers in the brain and the physical body , and thats why they fail

Scientific experiments are designed to REMOVE the scientist and any bias he/she may have. Go do a little bit of research on the topic.
You can do what you want but I'm going to stick with the process that's doubled our life expectancy in the last 50 years, and that continues to find cures to otherwise deadly diseases.

@thedust25 No, thats known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), they used to call it Muliple Personalities. People can have up to 100+ personalities (that's rare though, it depends on the severity of the stress and the ability the handle everything)
@themooddisorders somethimes you have psychotic breakouts because you're under a lot of stress, but this reflects that you have a psyque disbalance that could pop at any other moment. it would be adviceable to visit a doctor if this happens.
not everybody who hears voices occasionally is ill. My mom's both schizophrenic and bipolar. Dunno if it's genetic but when i was little, i would hear voices and talk to them but it was more like an imaginary friend except more extreme. It wasn't bad voices but more a companion. The presence is still there in my head but i never got it checked out cuz i'm scared they'll throw me in a psych ward like they tried to do my mom before my grandma made them stop her tests. People think its weird when its not them but when its you its just...."normal"...

Why does anyone actually care what the voices are saying. Does it matter? I never wanted to talk about the things I heard and to be honest i couldn't even remember when being questioned about.
I was reassesed as bi polar recently. People were unsure if I was schizophrenic or bi polar or schizo affective. Bi Polar seems more like it to me. It all started with depression.
I was first treated as a schizophrenic when I was 24. I was told that I was having awake dreams and psychotic episodes. I remember when I first had difficulties with my thoughts/voices. I hated my life and the person I had became. I started telling myself in my thoughts how much I hated myself and it eventually evolved into two voices and maybe evoloved further. I'm rarely troubled by schizophrenia anymore that was 7 years ago. I survive on benefits. I need to find a way to earn again.
I have to agree with that earlier poster. I'm schizophrenic and I have a voice I've labeled "Angel" who tells me to do the good things of the bible, but mostly feed the poor.
@Magix1reaper I agree. Most of my voices are chaotic and I'd love to get rid of them, but when I'm working out I hear a lot of negativity, which actually benefits me and keeps me going longer then I would have without them. I often joke and consider those voices to be random people in the gym yelling at me, but without the awkwardness of them actually existing and watching me work out.
is it a stretch to assume that maybe we are all born with many different compartments where we keep the most inspirational personalities that we come across? is it crazy to assume that the impermeable self is in control of these compartments? is it always a positive voice coming from any one of the personalogical traits that u have picked up and now choose to carry inside?
Is there a link between diabetes and schizophrenia? Just wondering because these people are all morbidly obese. Also, I have known some diabetics to be schizophrenic as well. Just curious, I am not well versed in this area but it seems like a possibility.
@thebruno44 - It's the medications, For those that looked to psychiatry for help it can make you morbidly obese, permanent sexual dysfunction, heart problems, liver problems, permanent facial ticks, give you diabetes, basically take of 15 to 20 years of your life
There's lots more side effects & often those medications don't work as well as having been known to increase delusions.

I've probably had schizophrenia all my life but I thought nothing of it. My parents believed in ghosts, demons, and angels. I thought they were real and I was seeing them. Things got worse as I got older, especially after my dad killed himself. About a year after his death I would hear my boyfriend talking and saying weird things when he wasn't. When I was 17, I was in the car with my mom and boyfriend when I heard a demon whisper my name in my ear. I even felt the breath. I really panicked.
i get voices but only when im relaxing.an theyre not evil. used to be muffled arguing but nowadays its mostly harmless jibberish, as though im listening to a three way conversation and can only hear 2 of them. the part that bothers me is the feeling of being out of phase with the world. when someone makes me a cup of tea or food, i suspect they hav poisoned it, i ignore that thought and continue eating (tho i dont enjoy it lol. its like trying to eat a cake after u find a hair in it)
I used to think everyone is out to get me when I was really little and I used to talk to myself alot but nothing too strange just 6 year old fantasies of adventure.

Now remember, back when this ep of 20/20 was made, 'schizophrenia' was the mental illness du jour. Today, it's 'bipolar disorder'. It's hell for me. I've had it since I was in my mid teens. Around the time I had it I thought I was a character from a manga name "Luffy" (google it the best manga ever made called "OnePiece" they come out with 20 pages every week. I remember a time when they had a swastika in it too). Then when I was running around the neighborhood I thought I was going to go into Zoro's house (his first crew member).

It was kind of gay how they ended the first part with Zoro being trained by the man he will most likely beat at the end of the manga. I also have a belief that Hitler is greater than Lincoln. In my opinion he did better for humanity than Lincoln and had a better view of Jews than Lincoln had of blacks (if you don't believe me read a book named "Lincolns white dream") Lincoln saw blacks as subhuman while Hilter had a couple of Jews as honorary Aryans.

Ever have a bad trip on hallucinogenic drugs where you feel extreme paranoia?? That's what it feels like to be psychotic, and is the same state of mind a schizophrenic feels. When you compare physical pain to mental pain there is a large gap between the struggle one undertakes to battle sanity. Once you go insane the only way out is suicide. Really depressing stuff. I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy.

I had one tiny episode of this only once so its not scizoprenia but i was dosin off to sleep but still awake and this evil mean sounding (male voice) said ''Just dieeeeee'' and i jumped and wouldn't come out of my blanket for like 5 minutes... and another time i was laying in my bed and somthing behind me said somthing like 'Boo!!' and my heart was racing..but that was it.. but ever since that i got interested in these videos

My experience with skitzophrenia has been brilliant and I wouldn't change it for the world, I'm one of a kind and infact im scared only of 2 things concerning it. 1.The voices have always been nice and 100% helpfull, its like a have 3 brains and I fear they could change one day turn against me. 2.I'm scared that one day it might cure itself and go away and I would never be myself again and I'd miss it.

These voices and visions are just as real as looking across the room or listening to someone. When someone tells you they hear voices you say well just ignore them or its probably something else or your just crazy. Well it seems like someone is talking to you but you cant here them its almost like you cant do anything about it the voices to you are someone you care and so you listen to them and thats why its very scary and dangerous.

The first guy was lucky, a lot of people, like me, have parents who refuse to believe it, it took me a lot of courage to tell my mum and all she said was that it was common for people with "big imaginations" and that i'm not aloud to go see a doctor.

@ThrexyX Most, if not all, mental illnesses have some kind of physical evidence that explains part of the disorder. Most of the time it's an imbalance in neurotransmitters of the brain, but these findings aren't enough to explain the diseases in their totality. The scientific consensus at the moment lies with the multiple origin theory, which implicates genetics and environment.

@WINDTALKER300 Define what you mean by scientific evidence. Can it be verified and tested by an independent party? Do you have a sample size of greater than 1? It is well known in medicine that schizophrenia symptoms diminish in severity over time for many people with or without medication. We many not understand the exact mechanics of it, but that's no reason to just make up supernaturalistic explanations.

@WINDTALKER300 oh, and I forgot to mention that schizophrenia does have a genetic component. The majority of the time it runs in families. Genetics is a very complicated process, and sometimes the disease is recessive, or has partial penetrance.....the matter is complicated even further by the fact that this is a mental disorder and thus harder to identify and diagnose, but like I said, we now know that schizophrenia has a large tendency to run in families.

My mom's both schizophrenic and bipolar. Dunno if it's genetic but when i was little, i would hear voices and talk to them but it was more like an imaginary friend except more extreme. It wasn't bad voices but more a companion. The presence is still there in my head but i never got it checked out cuz i'm scared they'll throw me in a psych ward like they tried to do my mom before my grandma made them stop her tests. People think its weird when its not them but when its you its just...."normal"...

Why does anyone actually care what the voices are saying. Does it matter? I never wanted to talk about the things I heard and to be honest i couldn't even remember when being questioned about.
I was reassesed as bi polar recently. People were unsure if I was schizophrenic or bi polar or schizo affective. Bi Polar seems more like it to me. It all started with depression.

I was first treated as a schizophrenic when I was 24. I was told that I was having awake dreams and psychotic episodes. I remember when I first had difficulties with my thoughts/voices. I hated my life and the person I had became. I started telling myself in my thoughts how much I hated myself and it eventually evolved into two voices and maybe evoloved further. I'm rarely troubled by schizophrenia anymore that was 7 years ago. I survive on benefits. I need to find a way to earn again.

I have to agree with that earlier poster. I'm schizophrenic and I have a voice I've labeled "Angel" who tells me to do the good things of the bible, but mostly feed the poor.

@Magix1reaper I agree. Most of my voices are chaotic and I'd love to get rid of them, but when I'm working out I hear a lot of negativity, which actually benefits me and keeps me going longer then I would have without them. I often joke and consider those voices to be random people in the gym yelling at me, but without the awkwardness of them actually existing and watching me work out.

is it a stretch to assume that maybe we are all born with many different compartments where we keep the most inspirational personalities that we come across? is it crazy to assume that the impermeable self is in control of these compartments? is it always a positive voice coming from any one of the personalogical traits that u have picked up and now choose to carry inside?

Is there a link between diabetes and schizophrenia? Just wondering because these people are all morbidly obese. Also, I have known some diabetics to be schizophrenic as well. Just curious, I am not well versed in this area but it seems like a possibility.

@thebruno44 - It's the medications, For those that looked to psychiatry for help it can make you morbidly obese, permanent sexual dysfunction, heart problems, liver problems, permanent facial ticks, give you diabetes, basically take of 15 to 20 years of your life
There's lots more side effects & often those medications don't work as well as having been known to increase delusions.

I have an audition at Stella Adler theatre school soon, and I am researching a monologue that deals with this issue, I need to grasp the full aspect of this monologue and not present this character as just a crazy person!! This monologue comes from the play "The spotted Man" I play Eugene

@IronicallyVague...Its ok. I have read the entire play a couple of times, and the patient "Eugene" is more than just another patient, he's a manifestation of his own pain. His torment. Read the entire Play =)

@glovztoshow I have also voices that telling me to go to school work etc. But When I get older I realized that it was my dad who was telling me this.

I have schizophrenia, and mine is nothing like this. I just have an imaginary friend. We talk sometimes, that's about it. No torture.

I've probably had schizophrenia all my life but I thought nothing of it. My parents believed in ghosts, demons, and angels. I thought they were real and I was seeing them. Things got worse as I got older, especially after my dad killed himself. About a year after his death I would hear my boyfriend talking and saying weird things when he wasn't. When I was 17, I was in the car with my mom and boyfriend when I heard a demon whisper my name in my ear. I even felt the breath. I really panicked.

i get voices but only when im relaxing.an theyre not evil. used to be muffled arguing but nowadays its mostly harmless jibberish, as though im listening to a three way conversation and can only hear 2 of them. the part that bothers me is the feeling of being out of phase with the world. when someone makes me a cup of tea or food, i suspect they hav poisoned it, i ignore that thought and continue eating (tho i dont enjoy it lol. its like trying to eat a cake after u find a hair in it)

Does anyone with schizophrenia think that that might be what I have? I'm always really paranoid that people around me hate me secretly, and lately I've been paranoid that people can read my mind [I know it sounds crazy] .. I haven't heard voices or anything but I've read that what's happening to me is a symptom..

Now remember, back when this ep of 20/20 was made, 'schizophrenia' was the mental illness du jour. Today, it's 'bipolar disorder'. Think of all the people you know who either call themselves bipolar or have actually convinced a psychiatrist to go in on it with them. This is 100% media bullhype, and I feel sorry for all of you who got got twice now.
I wonder what the next celebrity mental illness will be.

@nicegirlatmiami They had to call it a disease of (insert positive attribute that everyone can identify with here) people. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been popular. This is exactly the kind of media hype that turned a handful of halftime pushers into a global corporate marketing juggernaut.
They have to make their disease sound a little bit like something you wouldn't mind having. They make their money convincing people that being mentally ill ain't really so bad.
