i walk the street at night with no destination!world of darkness.Thats some deep ish I'm only new to this david ruffin stuff unbelievable.I feel his tracks are so much deeper then what is on the surface.I hope he found peace within hisself in the afterlife since he couldn't find peace in this lifetime one luv to what is real
Ridiculous vocal range... truly tappin' out on tha 88th key of the piano on this song, wow... I've tried, tried, and tried again to attempt to bang out those "sirens" that Dave is releasing throughout this song, and in real life, it just ain't gonna happen, lol, I'd love to sing this one for my D.R. tribute but hindered by the range on this one I do admit... well the saying is "leave well enough alone"... Understood lol
Those call and response patterns @2:27 are as near to pure Gospel as you're going to get in popular music I think. It all adds up to a tremendously exciting performance.
How I miss REAL Soul singing Today's generation of singers seem to have thrown it all away, being more concerned with how they look on TV than how soulfully they sing - what a waste.
@theyoungprince123 Definitely the best ever. Some of the stuff you hear him sing that sounds good...would be nothing in the hands of an ordinary vocalist. He was so good he could make a mediocre song sound good, and when you gave him something good he turned it into a masterpiece. "Sunshiiiiiiiine, blue skies, please go awaaaay".....
David is Bad but, Sam is the Man.......nice point samsarman.....these two along with Gaye and Green or the pearls of male and you can also add Archie Brownlee ....soul singers.....no question.....they all had great range.....you need to do your homework young one.
ok so i love david but there is no one better than sam cooke,.now david was at selling his emotion and could whistle better than anyone but theres a reason why they call sam "the man who invented soul"
@samsarman Sam is the man too. But Sam could not hit the notes Ruffin did on this track point blank. Scientifically he should because Ruff had such a husky voice. But Sam's voice could never go high as Ruff can.
asI read thru comments it makes me happy that people are recognizing DAVID's AWESOME TALENT! I grew up on "THE VOICE" His ability comes but once in a lifetime! He was soo much more than the times with the temps!!
This is the first time I heard this song, STUNNING! Eventhough the Temptations movie was fictional and one-sided, it lead people like me to "discover" David. He was an unmatched talent.
Yeah this is top, can't say that I think too much of Ruff the man, but Ruff the singer is out of this world at times. Some of the best things he did are those gospel drenched songs like this, Dinah and I Want You Back. And the underrated Me and Rock 'n' Roll are here to Stay is another great Ruff track. A forgotten legend.
Thank goodness, this great artist is no longer "forgotten." He's got a comeback (thanks to the TV series turned DvD) and his fan base is growing ... Only a few years ago, the only solo title I knew by him was "Walk Away From Love." Today, I have my own little DR library.
Marvin Gaye about David: "I heard in his voice a strength my own voice lacked."

I just can't believe that Motown did not have the wisdom at the time did not release
this song as a single . What a terrible wasted opportunity . Unbelivable .

Got to include Jackie Wilson and Levi Stubbs if we're rounding up the top dogs. But to me, Ruffin is no#1.

I definetly agree with you dkwaz3. How can you have a grity voice and reach those notes? It seems like he had several voices.

It's funny you would never believe he could do the stuff he does with his voice on this track by just listening to his work as a Temptation.

@travelinman i think thats why he left so he can do bigger and better things...it lasted for a while sad :(
