Cash did his best to bring PURE GENIUS to 70's TV dinner time. Something most folks can't think about. Oh.........And the 2 of them surely partied their ass' off. Nashville Roommates
As a kid I found my dad's record collection to be almost magical. It was a different age wayyyy back then. One of my dad's favorites was Roger Miller and I recall listening to every song many times. Dad died on Christmas morning years ago and today I found myself listening to some Roger Miller and it brought out a lot of smiles and a tear or two. Thanks for allowing me to "sneak" into your records dad.
A QUESTION,,,,DID THESE TWO SUPERSTARS EVER PERFORM TOGETHER IN A CONCERT ANYWHERE AND IS THERE ANY,,,ANY FOOTAGE AVAILABLE TODAY???? THAT ALONE WOULD BE WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD AFTER SEEING THEM TOGETHER HERE ON JOHNNY CASH'S SHOW
Roger and Johnny were both LEGENDS then, and always will be.
Roger's genius is still only starting to be appreciated today. Big River was his crowning achievement, but there is a very large volume of work that proved his genius long before Big River. Anyone who dismisses Miller as the guy who just sang "Doo Whacka Doo" is missing a lot of great songwriting and music from a master.
As for Johnny, I was never a big fan until the American Recordings, which Rick Rubin produced. Now I am a BIG fan!
@landrykkb I don't think Cash would argue the point. They were friends and I reckon that's what mattered most to Cash. I doubt they saw their careers as being a competition.
@abargle Of course,I never implied there was ever any competiton amongst the two;that's just my personal opinion.Johnny Cash was much more of a visible figure than Roger Miller, hence why he had his own variety show.
@landrykkb Didn't Roger have his own show briefly, too? Roger's real tragedy was that he died just as he was hitting his creative stride. What a damned shame.
@abargle You might be right about that, but I'm not 100% sure.Roger Miller definitely appeared on his fair share of variety shows, that's for sure.I wholeheartedly agree that he had so much more yet to contribute if he hadn't have died.
Johnny Cash was in movies too. He starred in films such as Five Minutes To Live, Murder In Coweta County, The Pride Of Jesse Hallam, a remake of a old John Wayne movie which was called Stage Coach, and he was also in Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman.
What great footage! These two had a special chemistry which sure shows up here. I have never seen this. Just realizing how lucky I was. Every year the Ohio State Fair had top entertainment & was free with fair admission. I got to see Johnny & June with their little boy (maybe 4-6) put on a SUPER show!!! We planned when to go to the fair by the entertainment. We all loved Johnny Cash so that year was a no-brainer. What great performers. What great people. Thanks!
I just LOVE Johnny's laugh and smile! That song "I'm going Back to where I come From" has the same melody as "The Tennessee Flat top Box". But that's okay...hey it's Johnny Cash!!
Read Marshall Chapman's new book "They Came to Nashville" it is like making a new best friend, or ten. Then read "Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller." It'll blow your mind when you figure out that she is you.
@GeorgieWise Marshall Chapman!! I think on the back of one of Waylon's or Willie's album there was a dedication to Marshall saying something like---"Marshall is a good old girl, she can ride on the bus anytime". What ever happened to Marshall Chapman?? She was heavy into the "outlaw" movement when it wasn't popular to be...
Oh my god two of the greatest legends playing on the same guitar? am i seeing things? Who do you think gots the voice of them if you had to choose? ;)
My Daddy was born in 1946 and Johnny Cash's music got him through many a rough times. It really warms my heart and soul to see the man in black smile and chuckle like that. great post...
I lived the song Tom Green County Fair when I was 10 and haven't heard that song since it had air time on the radio. Anyone got any idea where I can buy a clean mp3 of the song?
I saw Big River on Broadway over 20 years ago. Enjoy Rogers music now more than ever. His music makes you feel good listening to it.
Also enjoy J. Cash's music. Two Greats! Wish they were still around. Thanks for posting this gem for all to see. I'm sure there are many that never had the pleasure of seeing these two perform. Listen to a couple of my favorites by Roger:
Walkin' in the Sunshine & King of the Road & Husbands & Wives, Old Toy Trains. Good stuff!
This is an AWEOME video find! Thanks for posting it. Roger Miller was one of the most talented musicians the Good Lord ever let breathe. Got to see him a couple of times in this area where I live in central Cal...where, by the way, Roger's middle/older brother Wendell Miller lives AND who I have the pleasure of "jammin" with just about every Friday nite in Laton, CA. Wendy is "the Fiddlin' Man" of Hanford, CA whom everybody gets a big kick out of and he's a bang up entertainer himself!
Awsome people!

One of greatest Singer and Song Writters of our time.
Nobodys does justice to his Songs like Roger . Just listen to Husbands & Wifes nobody could capture the mood like Roger.

@shilo39 Roger Miller's even still underrated as a songwriter and musician nearly 19 years after he left us.
