thats what mine sounds like normally and it has no upgrades on it do you think because its a sohc 4.0 that it sounds like this cuz it sounds deep like this with no exhaust system added i have a 97 explorer sport feed back will be appreciated very much
i have worked all the factory bugs out of my engine. it had somewhere around 160hp and now pulls 230hp with some simple mods the automotive companies dont want you to know. simple mods. and yes, it was dyno pulled.
Look at some of my other videos, it's now a stroked, bored over and cammed. I'm fighting a valve cover leak but should have it fixed by this weekend as it's supposed to warm up and I'll be able to get out there and work on it. Maybe I'll get another exhaust video up soon.. this one will be better.
your engine sounds to be getting a small backfire while free revving. remove the MAF sensor and inspect the sensor wires. they look like light bulb filaments. they should be clean not black with dust. if they are dirty, clean them with a MAF sensor cleaner spray. can of this stuff should cost somewhere around $5.00 per can. seriously sounds like your engine isnt pulling as hard, sounds like its mildly bogging down. trust me i know what im saying.
wow, hope youre prepaired to fix that beast when something goes wrong?? in cold less than 30degrees, metal becomes fragile and offroad, something will break. but all in all, the explorers were reliable as long as you kept up with the fluid changes and basic repairs. the v6 motors had timing chains for starters and a primitive needle bearing axle support system but it worked. so many other reasons i have for anyone to buy the explorer as an excellent choice but the list would be too long.
All cats are still there, you could change it out yourself. Hack the pipe before and after the muffler, ask some gentlemen at an auto parts store to get you the correct size pipe adapters and U-Clamp the new muffler into place. The stock Muffler is a boat anchor compared to the Flowmaster, I wouldn't worry about any hangers to attach it.
Hey do you know anything about the wheel bearings? My dad's explorer has two front wheel bearings that are making noise and we probably want to replace them. I don't know how though.
@undertake782 dont buy new ones, re pack the old ones. Take the tire brakes and hub off. pull the bearing. get some HIGH TEMP grease otherwise regular grease will melt off, rub LOTS of grease on it, unless u have access to a bearing packer, and replace it. I highly doubt it needs replaced, just greased.
@italiankid1119 if its 4wd its a sealed unit. very easy to replace. take axle nut off unplug abs sensor take three bolts out of knuckle air hammer old bearing out. shouldnt take more than an hour per side. i do them in about ten minutes a side.
@mabbott1667 local exhaust shop where i live has a sohc 4.0 explorer(same as my ranger) and said for max performance with out losing back pressure is well for me 2.5 from cat back which is what i have. i think for a single in and dual out is 3inches in and 2.5 out oh and for the record tip size doesn't do shit for sound or anything lol all looks and glam
@BlowingPumpkins so if i wanted a flowmaster delta i chould just put it in repalce of the on muffler maybe cut out the cat but i was wondering because some pople have 2 inch piping and i was like that not that big
I have an 02 Explorer, if I just weld this muffler stratight on will i have the same sound? I really like the sound. Its not to loud and aggressive. It dont sound like you're tryinging to make it something it's not. I think its sexy for an Explorer on 22's to be deep.
im sorry but i didnt want to get the mudwater all over my truck... ohhh heres a big monstorous puddle to go through... i bet thats full of mudwater... VROOOOMMMM... lmao
I can flip the switch into 4x4 HI or AUTO while driving any speed up to 30mph, it's basically a AWD system. In order to flip it into 4x4 Low, I have to go into neutral and have my foot on the brake for it to lock all four wheels.
I don't get how.. . the Flowmaster is just basically strategically placed metal triangles welded inside an oblong cylinder, right? But yes, I had about 6,000 - 8,000 miles on it when I noticed a definite change in audible pitch.
Diameter of your exhaust pipe will also affect how loud it is. I noticed more of a lope and louder tone when I switched to a 2-1/2" pipe from the stock 2".
Yes, they're BFGoodrich All-Terrains. 31x10.50r15 to be exact. If your tire guy says they won't fit, kick him in the nuts and say "RESPECT MY AUTHORITY!"
The stock tire size is P235's..but you can stuff 31"s in there with no rub, and it looks a hell of a lot better.
The only area you miiiight rub is while have the front wheels fully cranked right or left. They won't hit the actual fender or front bumper or anything, but mine come close to the inner fender guard. That black vinyl err hard plastic whatever it's made of guard that is literally push-pinned to the wheel well.
Now my Explorer is 4x4, I've noticed the 2WD Ex's sit a little lower in the front, I don't know why but.. that could prevent you from turning all the way right or left.
BUT, you can correct that by cranking the torsion bar bolts a few turns and raising the front end up to 2" before effecting ride quality. OR, just cutting off a little section of that Plastic protector crap. OR OR OR, just letting the tread on the tire eat a grove in it ;P
ive got a 99 xlt with the ohv v6. my transfer case auto engages the 4x4 when the rears slip. you can lock in 4x4 on the fly. no need to stop. mine has 4 cats on it. 1 per header, then 2 more after the y pipe. for the record, these things will go through shit way worse than this. you probably know that. but yea, i have shitty tires on mine and ive definitly gone through shit where the frame was dragging. it will go anywhere as long as the frame isnt stuck in the mud
When he put it in 4wd it sounded like 4low, otherwise 4high can be turned on while driving also but 95 and 96 have 4auto no regular full time high like the 97+ you have to do the brown-wire-mod to the 95 and 96 trucks to have the full-time high option or switch to a 97 GEM and rig the front axle. Truck sounds good after it warms up do you plan on lifting it of anything?
yea, i was thinking of a 2-3 in suspension lift. nothing serious, just getting some air shocks a few inches longer than standard. then run 31" tires. im in school right now so i dont really have to money for any of this. but eventually this car will be my offroader toy. im thinking about rebuilding the engine and running a twin turbo setup on it. run about 14lbs of boost, should get me about 300hp. trans needs rebuilt too, 2nd does mesh quite right coming out of first some times. but for now idc
hey man that sucks if your wanting somthing with sound go with open cats thats the loudest turner sound you can get. i would know i have a 96 explorer with the 4.0 v6 with a five speed.
While your correct, most states do not allow you to drive with open cats, the trucks just won't pass inspection.
I agree with you, that is louder, however that's not what I want. I wanted a more tuned low-pitched sound, closer to a V8 and that's what the flowmaster gave me.
Also, running it open like that is just going to eventually drive you and everyone around you nuts, not to mention if you own the SOHC V6, your losing power due to no back pressure.
man the explorers come with three cats theres now worry about backpressure. the less the bacpressure the more horsepower. and for the inspection part put a empty glasspack on it and that will let you pass inspection and still have a loud tuner sound.
The 2nd gen OHV V6, which mine has, came with 1 cat..
The 2nd gen SOHC V6 has 2 I beleive..
Cammed engines need a little bit of backpressure to keep their power/torque in the low rpm range, the SOHC will suffer from too much of a free flowing exahust system
Ey BP, allow me to comment that you don't need back pressure and you wont lose power with an open pipe. If anything, you might even gain some. What you mean is "scavenge action" and that's taken care of by the manifolds. No manifolds, cylinders dont empty and fill properly, you lose power. Back pressure is only needed for 2 strokes to push back on the exhaust port as the charge is being forced in thru the "transfer" port.
I see.. I was unaware that just manifolds took care of that..
However, I've seen a SOHC lose 14hp on the dyno from stock exhaust to open headers, and gain 23hp from open headers to a single Flowmaster Super 44 system. Totaling a 9hp increase from stock to finish.
Can you explain that to me? No disrespect intended, I'm honest to goodness curious.
Hmmm...wouldn't have expected that. If that's the case, the EFI system's calibration went out of whack as the engine suddenly breathed much easier. With a swifter exhaust flow, more oxygen/fuel had been dumped directly into the exhaust during valve overlap causing a false lean reading from the O2 sensors. This in turn would have caused the ECU to increase fuel delivery resulting in a slower burning overly rich mixture. An incompletely burned mixture will add to more O2 in the exhaust...
Theoretically, an engine will make more power with a freer exhaust particularly at higher rpm where power becomes more and more easily produced, and about the only reason why they'd make less that way is if the air-fuel ratio is way out of whack.
Now, an overhead valve engine compared to an overhead cam engine.. would one or the other benefit over the other from a more free flowing exhaust? Theoretically*
Because an ohc is tuned for high rpm performance it should make more power than an ohv of similar displacement, power adders aside. Higher rpm means higher flow requirements, hence the tendency for a more positive response to a free flowing exhaust.
thats true, but the biggest cause of power robbing from exhausts is when you go too big of a diameter, allowing the exhaust gases to cool and contract, causing a loss in exhaust velocity (which is even more important with engines with more valve overlap) reducing the "scavenging" effect during the transision from exhaust to intake cycles.
the best exhaust systems are not made by diameter but from mandrel bends and stainless steel, making more flow and insulating heat in the pipe
I was lucky enough to see a Civic hit a fire hydrant going about 30mph. The fire hydrant won, and they're meant to break away incase they're hit arnt' they? aaahahah!
I couldnt agree with you more... stock the OHVs get 190hp the SOHCs get 210 but I think I lost HP wen I installed dual cherrybombs... I dont know what kind of other exhaust and power adders might remedy that...I would take my exhaust off if it meant horsepower.
Thanks man it sounds like you know your shit...right now I am running True dual cherrybombs with cats and a spectre cone filter because the K&n intake is the same size as the stock for my truck so I just got the cone filter and removed the box from the old square one...I like the way the cherrybombs sound but I definitley dont want to loose power because of them so maybe a dual in dual out flowmaster dumped out in front of the rear tires could be a worthy upgrade...Oh and high flow cats..(;
Sorry, I do not like water freezing on various electronic rubber components. It tends to screw with their performance. So in turn, you can go fuck yourself.
the sound is almost the same of mine, Explorer 1994 xlt 4 doors, great audio = 2 subwoofers pioneer 400rms each = 800rms, DHD 2 channel amp with 500rms each channel so 1000rms only of bass, 2 farad capacitor and 4 speakers 6,5" with 50rms each and 6 tweeters with the pioneer deh-6950ib deck. for the exhaust flowmaster 40 but i dont know which series but sound like urs i think, also has same tires, front gas shocks, limo 1 tinted windows.
exactly the same as mine in the uk, same colour everything, only thing i have over you is im about the only one around here who has one, most uk trucks are 2.0l - 2.5l, and suck, there are very few of these. great sound, and am going to get myself a flowmaster.
yessirr, I pulled out onto a two lane highway with the speed limit 55, at close to or at 5,000rpm in 1st gear I passed a state trooper in a dodge charger.. who wasn't having a good day I beleive.

If you don't have the cat on there, put that back on, or if you still do, get an aftermarket air intakesystem, i.e., a K&N system.
Are you running true duals? (two seperate pipes w/ two seperate mufflers), if so, downsize to a single muffle with dual outlets.
Idealy for the SOHCs would be a highflow cat converter with a dual outlet single muffler with 2.5 In piping to 3 in tips.
ahh sounds so Godly! hahah

Thanks man it sounds like you know your shit...right now I am running True dual cherrybombs with cats and a spectre cone filter because the K&n intake is the same size as the stock for my truck so I just got the cone filter and removed the box from the old square one...I like the way the cherrybombs sound but I definitley dont want to loose power because of them so maybe a dual in dual out flowmaster dumped out in front of the rear tires could be a worthy upgrade...Oh and high flow cats..(;

the only problem with the ohv engine explorers is that they are weak compared to the sohc versions...still good trucks though

I agree AND disagree with you.
The SOHCs have more high RPM hp, and are a bit faster than the OHVs and the V8's (stock).
BUT, the SOHC engine IS the hardest to maintain and the least reliable, two words, TIMING CHAIN, they tend to explode :P
Since the SOHCs are cammed engines they need back pressure, you can't do too much exhaust wise without sacrifising power.
However, the OHVs are known to exceed 300k without total meltdown, I'd still prefer a SOHC :)
