@lessen1, You absolutely are not! Keep this in mind... there are only 3 primary reading areas on the guitar, with the 5th position (the area between 5th & 8th frets - plus or minus a fret up or down), being the main area where 90% of music is sight-read. It only takes some practice, some time and patience. Develop your rhythms along-side your recognition of notes and YOU WILL DO IT. All the best ~ & Keep Jammin!
that is lv 1 cause before that is beguinners guide and that teaches you more into detail where each note is on the staff and there placement on the guitars strings and fret board, this man is greatly edicated and just simply ask him for a beginners guide of those items I just spoke of also request for him in that guide to explain the guitars open notes and there corresponding music letter example abcdefgabcdefgabcdefg, aslo in that to try an easy song with teaching you the beguinning.
This was a really great video! Definitely not what I expected from reading the title of the video, but does answer some questions I have about visualizing the fret board, and knowing which position to play in.
5 fingers - 5 frets - high 5! Before I watched your video I too had been playing for decades always relying on tab or playing by ear. Now I am going to learn to sight read and be set free to play anything I like. I never would have figured out the association of low and high notes on the staff with the concept of blocks of 5 frets. It was a real ah ha moment. Also appreciate the info on locating sharps and flats, cheers
@ilke10 I totaly understand you then, but believe me, knowing your music all around will ALWAYS be so HELPUL. Even for grunge.
I rocked in Spain with a well known band for years thinking just like you did until I had to give in. Knowing your shit will set you free to rock, grunge, punk, or whaterver you wan to play and/or sing.
I came to this conclusion after 20 yrs of playing. If I had only listened to my dad on day one...
Awesome!!! That just answered a question I've had for ages!!! The answer is you have flexibility as to which note you choose, unlike piano where there is literally no flexibility in that area. Guitar is so subtle and so much less rigid. Rock on!
This was soooo helpful! I already knew how to read music notation but I had the same problem as the guy who wrote to you had. Thank you very, very much!
Great lesson....been learning from tabs the 2 years I've been playing and I am noticing my abilities have got really stuck ...been needing this video thanks bunches
in sheet notes 3rd fret D notes, 7fret D notes & 12 fret D notes is almost the same position so how will i know from which fret do i have to start if i saw a D note in a sheet?because when i try to check the sweet child o mine, the intro starts from D notes but there is no sign that you have to start in 12 fret.
Finally, someone who clearly explained how the fret board actually works. I studied piano and thought I would just jump into guitar. Didn't happen that way. I love the way to teach, it's factual and clear. Just enough information to learn without being overwhelmed.
I am glad that Vincent asked Andrew the quested for reading notes on the guitar. I had the same question. The fret board is so crammed with notes that it makes many beginner like me to fret.
Thanks Andrew for helping with very clear explanation. Please make a DVD of these kind of questions. I will be the first to buy.
let me just say that i spent the entire day trying to find someone explain what this dude just explained so simply. very nicely put and very educated.
It's very nice of you to take time and make videos. Thanks. I don't play instruments;however, I do enjoy singing. I was looking at pages on how to read music I learned a small amount.
wow you are very good at explaining this it really helps, thank you andrew! man if only i had a teacher like you i could finally wrap my head around this stuff.
Do you understand how much this helped? I have been listening to hundreds of videos trying to tell me how to read sheet music, this is the only successful one. You taught it to someone who has never read sheet music (Except the FACE and EGBDF parts). Thank you :P
The low E string and A string belong to the scale that is two octaves below middle C scale.
D, G and B belong to the scale that is one octave below middle C scale.
High E belongs to the scale of middle C.
The middle C scale is pretty much on the staff. When it repeats itself above the staff you are going up an octave. When the scale repeats itself below the staff you are going down an octave.
You rock Andrew! Thanks for taking the time to make these videos on You Tube... For FREE..Very nice lesson!!
Just taking the time to teach is very generouse. I follow all your lessons.. At 5 months teaching myself with people like you, most of your intense stuff is way over my head.. but like you said , 2- 2 1/2 YEARS.. lol oh my... Will stick with this and hope you are correct! At 5 months I get so frustrated watching people on you tube, but not understanding they have been playin for years.
this guy makes everything so clear. after playing violin for 14 years, playing guitar and notereading on it was an epic failure, as my notereading is bad enough on the violin. i never knew which position to keep my fingers. now i do, for the guitar AND violin. Andrew = 5*
reading lesson, 1st position, index finger on C 1st fret, 3d finger on B flat 3d fret, & so on ,your mind sees the notes on the scale , on the string, & fret and after weeks ,months, of long hours of practice you will be able to read a little bit, after you learn whole notes 1/4 1/2 & 1/8& 16th and all the timing to go with it . now to the 3d position, now you index finger is on the B flat 3d finger on the C now you have to relearn every thing each time you move up a fret ,good luck.
ok i know this takes awhile to get good at playing guitar but i think im more confused than before. i know how to read music and the name of the notes and beats and what not from playing saxophone. but i just cant seem to grasp how i know which note is which on the fret board and how you know what it is. like is there a certain pattern? am i just over thinking this or what? someone help me please? ps i can read tabs not sheet music
ok hard to explain on computer, but here goes. if u start on the top or bottom E string, the first fret is an F, there is no sharp (#) between E and F, or B and C. the next fret is an F#, third fret is is a G, fourth is a G# and so on down the musical alpahbet A-G
@ metallover. in order to make reading standard notation -not tab- on the guitar, easier, you should do the following: be familiar with the fretboard notes, being able to recognize them instantly, associate them with scale shapes and chords, MASTER the guitar fretboard. Secondly, know where each note is on the STAFF. every space, line including ledger. then watch this vid in order to find them on your guitar. good luck and chin up :D
I totally understood all of that and i don't even play guitar. But I do play piano and violin. I heard if you can play paino you can learn any instrument. And that violin is one of the hardest instruments to play. Like guitar but without frets so you have to be more precise i guess. In other words its way easier to sound really terrible. But If im pretty good at violin i could get good at guitar. i'm glad i saw this video though. I feel like I have a way better understanding of playing guitar.
wow at first it was confusing(im an intermdeiate music reader) but ever since my lessons stopped i really dont know where to go cuz im a teenager and cant afford lessons but THANKKK YOU!!helped me out A LOT
I actually had an "a-ha" moment when I watched this video... like a missing piece of a puzzle finally found. I honestly don't know how much more he could have explained it to make it better...
I believe he's referring to the range... ie: between the open position to the 5th position (5th fret) is what he references when playing notes appearing below the musical staff, while playing notes between the 5th & 10th frets when the notes are "inside" the staff... then from 10th thru 15th frets would be played when referencing notes that extend above the musical staff...
I agree. The trouble with these kind of videos is that they don't usually explain everything as if you learned it before. They expect everyone to already know some stuff, and that ain't right. I do think this guy tries better than some others who upload on youtube.
hey adrewu explained it well but when i look at msic i just see dots on a 5 bare neck and there are 6 bares on the guitar...... i dont get where i put my fingers
Really? Look, I can't read music notes, I might as well be reading Hieroglyphs, but Andrew explained it very well and I can actually see how it works at least.
I've been with you from the start of your youtube channel Andrew, and you're getting better and better at explaining things even more clearly every time - i'd never thought about the whole three positions for notes under in and above the stave before, but it's a great way of learning. Thank you very, very much.
Thank you for this lesson. As with all your other videos you manage to get in all the relevant information in a very concise and well explained manner. I've learned more from your videos than any number of books I own.
great explanation

ok so if the notes are below the ledger lines I should use the open strings up to the fifth fret.
if the notes are inside the ledger lines i should find the notes in the 5th up to the 10th fret.
and if the notes are above the ledger lines It should be in the 10th fret up to the last fret.
makes sense it saves time on thinking what string to use and where in the fretboard should be

Response to thelessonman--
Really? Look, I can't read music notes, I might as well be reading Hieroglyphs, but Andrew explained it very well and I can actually see how it works at least.

This is probably one of the best guitar lesson channels on the web IMO. This guy should be making so much more money with the way he teaches!

I've been with you from the start of your youtube channel Andrew, and you're getting better and better at explaining things even more clearly every time - i'd never thought about the whole three positions for notes under in and above the stave before, but it's a great way of learning. Thank you very, very much.

I think your videos sit in a really nice Intermediate-advanced level. Too many videos just trudge the basics.

you took 10000000000 videos and put them into one ten minutes video, I didn't get it yet but hopefully 1 day..... thanks!!!!

Thank you for this lesson. As with all your other videos you manage to get in all the relevant information in a very concise and well explained manner. I've learned more from your videos than any number of books I own.
