I thoroughly enjoyed Pollini's work on Chopin's etudes...but I have listened to Evgeny Kissin do the preludes...and in this case, I think I like Kissin best, whereas with the etudes, I liked Pollini best.
He's still one of my favorite pianists though.
If the recording quality was equal on all the comparisons, it would surely help. Some fine pianists aren't doing much for their reputation with the bad quality videos on youtube.
I do enjoy the chance to listen and watch them though.
i thought it was OK, i like it a little slower too but you could hear the singing quality of this prelude. Martha also plays it quite fast like Pollini.
This recital finds Pollini at his most energetic, though others might call it rushed. It exemplifies the greater drama he often gives to his live playing. Few other pianists do it with this same ecstatic drive, something his critics seem completely deaf to. But the Pollini of the 2000s HAS lost the tonal elegance of his earlier work, and this recital in no way matches the coloristic nuance of his 1974 preludes disc. This might be partly due to the miking. Compressed sound doesn't help either.
i love these videos. the subtle changes of key just makes it feel like one great big piece. however i feel he could have put more expression into the number 4.
i like the record on the cd by him of the first prelude, its soooo much better, but i can kind hear that the tempo fluctuations, and dynamics sound very similar
ok nice

For comments about him rushing number 4:
Perhaps the largo applies to the melody line, not the eighth notes ;)
Overall a good performance, though I don't love No.4. I do love how he brings out the thumb on No1, though.

In view of your Well Tempered username, what do you think of the recent video recordings of the 24 Preludes in Unequal Temperament?

the first time I heard this it was played faster than this, I think the first time u hear a piece it makes a huge impression on u.

I HATE the second Prelude but Pollini actually made me want to listen to it!

Pollini è un grandissimo, ma secondo me Sokolov è insuperabile nei Preludi di Chopin

He never rushes his tempi - something of which younger pianists should take note.

Um... Prelude 4... major rushing. But for the most part, you are correct.
As a young pianist, extravagant use of rubato is very tempting... :/

Pollini e' sempre il migliore!! Nessuno interpreta Chopin come lui!

u mean the black and white on youtube of young pollini?

I think he means the Pollini's DG recording of the Preludes made in 70s.

Thanks for the post. I wonder what he played for the other half of the recital, since the Op.28 lasts for only about 35-40 minutes
