  • This is what every artist try to achieve. Simply beautiful.

  • Every single break is my favorite break ever. Such deep groove pocket.

  • you can tell how old this is by by looking at their hair. its old but still great.

  • I'd just like to add that this is the best upright bass sound I've ever heard.

  • awesome drummer. just too much compressor on the whole thing

  • Need more cowbell!

  • this is the best drum kit ill ever hear and ever see ever! and the best use of it

  • He looks funny. But nice drumming ^^

  • look at that ultimate switch from match to traditional at 2:18

  • 121 musicians and 1 guy with serious hearing impairment

  • Jeff Porcaro, John Robinson,Steve Gadd and Peter Erskine own the secret of backbeat placement... The others are simply humans

  • anyone know what kind of ride he's playing

  • master of the groove.

  • will ferrell killing it on bass

  • dr. phil is nasty at the drums

  • Now Thats' grooving. Top

  • @vivaelrock34 YES that's him

  • @fardrum good

  • too busy lol

  • amazing

  • continues to stupify even the most brilliant of players out there! simply the best.

  • Pure Gadd, love it!

  • Who says white nerdy men can't groove?? Soooo funky haha Peter Erskine is godly.

  • hahaha Everyday people from Arrested Development in the early 90's...

  • Easy does it....all those grooves.

We have got 24 letters in our alphabet; everything that's ever been written is based on them.

    All those grooves

  • Oooh dang THAT WAS NASTY SON OOOOOHHHHH

  • tasty!!!!!!

  • Giant steps are what you take

    walkin' on the moon

  • @muscritiq80 I totally heard that in there too. exactly the first thing i thought of!

  • Nice stache...err grooves.

  • This is how drums should be played, so musical and controlled, not dominating the groove, but just pushing it along, all class.

  • this is simply great...anyone has a idea what kind of cymbals he's using here ?

i love the sound of the hi hat

  • @bronislaw .... the drums are yamaha recording custom circa 1986 or so .... the cymbals are definitely all Zildjian .. probably mostly K`s with an A thrown in

  • @sweetfly66 , thank You!

  • Such a nice feel.. simple but still awesome

  • his musicality through his syncopated rythyms is just fantastic! he has an amazing ability to make anything groove soo hard!!

  • I think Peter Erskine is one of those dude that looks cooler old.

  • @TakashiKashikura Hahaha totally agreed in fact I prefer to be him at his age with a nice family and real fame with people who apreciate your work than a Brad Pitt (angelina included) hahahh.

  • @godzuki444 some people just look awesome old.

Like Sean Connery in the movie The Rock. he was at his prime, better than his days as 007. Then he got too old.

  • can anyone tell me what kit he's on? sounds fantastic

  • @mroizouk ... that is a yamaha recording custom drumset .. from the mid to late 80`s

  • just like the moustache. thanks sweetfly

  • What feel. So nicely done.

  • i think it was right-left-bass-right.. hehehe

  • The rhythm reminds me of Weather Report's Black Market, here and there.

  • can anyone tell me what he does at the very end of the video with the two floor toms and the base drum? thanks

  • Triplet pattern, Right-Left-Right-Bass

  • hey thanks

  • ..one of the finest out there

  • loving it

  • Great Erskine clip; the bass player is cool also! He locked-down that simple figure, right in the pocket, for the entire time. That's not easy.

  • @byronand5 ... that is Mark Johnson ... Peter has been playing with him for a very long time ... usually in the combo of Erskine , Johnson , and guitarist John Abercrombie ... this trio can be seen in the full length video this clip is taken from

  • It's interesting that he holds the stick so far up, especially in the right hand. Not at all in line with what Weckl and others advise in some youtube videos. To each his own, I guess

  • my point is that posture isn't crucial.---Yes it is.

you said "posture is ones ability to play"

that is just plain wrong sorry.--- How you sit @ the drum set very much determines what you can play and how you sound.

  • this is so great.. really..

  • Great, but poor posture.

  • who cares

  • He's showing examples here, bad posture is a poor example. Nobody cares PE has poor posture right, that's his problem.

  • Comment removed

  • wtf is posture---vdopower66

Posture is ones ability to play 7 over 5

or used in a sentence "vdopower66 is posturing his ignorance."

  • Comment removed

  • Sets a bad example for beginners like yourself vdopower66,

  • whatever i am done. my point is that posture isn't crucial. listen to the man's sounds and tell me there is something wrong.

besides there is a whole myriad of physiological factors which come into play when talking about "correct" posture. If one has a very long torso area then to keep balance it might be easier to not be sitting up 100% straight like robot. then there is muscle make up and skeletal structure.

    anyways,

you said "posture is ones ability to play"

that is just plain wrong sorry.

  • the intro on Dara Factor One on Weather Report(1982) alone makes Peter Erskine one of my favorite drummers.

  • Does anyone know wher this clip comes from - is it from a DVD, maybe? Would love to see it in higher def with better sound.

  • i dont think i will ever be able to be as locked in as he is........HOW?

  • Practice practice practice. If getting your timing perfect gives you a high then it's only a matter of time.

  • this is exactly a legendary groove.

  • what a groove ...what a groove ...what a groove ...what a groove ...what a groove ...what a groove ...

    ... LEGEND...

  • Groove > Chops

I could listen to Peter all day.

  • The stick flip around 2:18! Soo nice!

  • go erskine !!! go erskine !! go erskine !!

  • that is music and real groove, dont like this boring lot of fills-TOO MUCH stuff..

  • hes doing that to show how he still keeps time after doing fills that sound like... honestly ass. for example listen to the vid of him grooving nd put it on a metronome

  • why would anyone want to show a fill that sounds like "ass" it says it in the fucking caption, "drum variations with a common bass line" that's what he's showing

  • anyone got time keeping 1?

  • I don't much about peter erksine but just watching him color that simple groove speaks volumes about his muscianship and time keeping!!!

  • and he makes it look so easy.

I like this vid, cause it shows how to really color a basic groove and keep it somewhat simple but never boring.

He keeps that extremely relaxed feel at all times.

  • holy crap this guy is awesome. I love how he uses accents, especially on the snare.

  • 1:32 Turns the whole meter around. I love that trick. Stewart Copeland does it a lot too.

  • Between 2:20 and 2:24, stick grip transition. Nice.

  • Hes got such nice groove!

  • Sweet thunky tom from 2.18. Mmmm.

  • Now that is groovy!

  • that's some really grooving stuff! i love peter's little final lick at the very end, too

  • it's possible! white guys can groove, too!

  • haha it's Dave Weckl on the bass, lol

  • Nice grooves

but i think its really easy to keep the time

    where is it going ?

  • oh crap!!! so smooth... so clean!!!!! wah!!! simple but sweet!!! i wish erskine was here to teach me a few pointers!

  • I love how the first minute is basically hiphop beats :-)

  • Peter Erskine is a deeply elegant drummer

  • The Hard thing is play right on time like he does...

  • Peter got a metronome on his head

  • so much love

  • back when music what more important than looks.

FUCK THE WAY MAINSTREAM RADIO MTV FAGGOTS DO!

i have a helluva lot more respect for theis people than all those rappers that dont give a shit about learning how to sing and only want money, same for those ass holes who get all of the credit but can't even read a fucken treble cleft and tell the difference between a half note and a 16th note triplet

  • Homophobic, instrumentnazi ass! GTFO!

  • cool groove and nice sound. beats any drum solo

  • Maestro

  • This is the tightest video ever.

  • I have that exercise on a very old & scratched floppy vinyl disk.Way cool!

  • I liked Peter Erskine for a long time. I know his kit is kind of dated. But I really like the tuning of it. There's a lot of versatility there. Also, for the younger drummers, notice he is PLAYING drums, not BEATING drums. You could take each one of his grooves, maybe 4 bars of each, and really develop something from them. These are really solid ideas/directions he explores. But then again, what would you expect from him.

  • who are you to say that to the younger drummers? there are plenty of older drummers who could use that tip also. this video was amazing. i love that snare sound, and the ghosts notes were perfectly placed.

at 0:56 i felt like i was stoned it was so good!

  • I'm an experienced older drummer that has seen lots of younger drummers. I am also a bassist. Playing with younger drummers I find that most of them are too loud. They have no sense of dynamics. Sorry if I stepped on your toes, but I am a voice of experience. I did a stage show once as the musical director and the kid playing the kit was 13 and he was on it. He rocked in his band but when we did this gig he was in control of his dynamics. He was an exeption though.

  • I think dynamics is something you should'nt be too worried about when you're in your teens as a drummer. In the begining one should focus on timekeeping, groove and co-ordination...

  • That's a bit of a contradiction, since at least a half of grooving comes from playing dynamically. Pete's playing wouldn't groove if he played all strokes at the same (loud) dynamic level.

  • Well said! I wish someone had made me realize this when I started teaching myself to play at age 12.

  • Thank you!!! Dynamic is seriously important - on every instrument. If you can't play quietly, you're robbing the performance of the feeling and power it could have.

And having been in a few bands, I would prefer a drummer who rushes a bit over one who always plays as hard and fast as possible.

  • tue dat, diddo.

  • that's so hard to do...amazing groove! true master...

  • Yup!

  • hmmm, very nice. the bass player (Marc Johnson?) also plays pretty steady!

  • Impeccable!
