  • 7:58 is my fav part :)

  • this video is a wonder maker i just heard my part at the 8:10 mark. Thank you youtube!!!!

  • My MS is playing this for UIL. The Percussion part rocks!

  • This sounds really good.... my high school wind ensemble also performed this song, and it was my favorite out of them all....great performance!

  • this isn't a college level song? my middle school played this last year?

  • That is not an original part. That was arranged starting at 7:06. We played the original. XD There was never a repeat back to that part. Lol. Oh well great job and I liked it a lot.

  • This is ballin'! We're playing this too. :)

  • lol @ the saxophone towards the end who had to stop playing and adjust due to the SHEER INTENSITY OF JOHN BARNES CHANCE.

  • My symphonic band is learning this piece at the moment. We have an average of 3 percussionists :/ wish us luck. This has a crazy percussion part. It's scary just to look at. These guys were pretty cool at it though.

  • hell yea boro percussion!

i forgot how awesome wind ens was that year. this is the first time ive seen a video of the indy performance.

  • W \e are doing this song and i am a 7th grader our band is filled with 7th and 8th graders

  • @beyondbueatyxxx

You guys shouldn't be playing a college level piece at your grade level. XD

  • Super, SUPER performance!!

  • WOW! Very well done. Wish the audio was better. That's the way to f***ing play this piece!

  • Great performance! The execution of this piece was firey! (if that's a word).

  • LOL i was walking around backstage as you guys were playing this.

  • @Shadow2945 where are you from?

  • @MassHysteria92 i was the school that played before this one. J. P. Taravella from Florida.

    watch?v=J46cfbhrYU8

  • @Shadow2945 very nice. what instrument do you play?

  • This was pretty good, the precision was really great and the group is tight and in sync. Good job! Just wish the audio was a little better :(

  • We're playing this piece right now... unfortunately, we have to cater to some who don't get that they actually have to practice. My friends and I were joking that at slower speeds it sounds like someone summoning the devil... no offense meant to anyone. Also, I'm rather surprised to see only one French Hon in there. Though the horn part IS redundant (trust me; I know. UGH.), usually without at least two the sound can't cut through. However, she did do a good job projecting.

  • @Impersonatr i know how it feels to have to work with people who don't think that practice is necessary. worst thing ever. and as for the horn comment, we actually have 4 horns in our band. i guess the camera never shows all 4 of them though.

  • @Impersonatr looking back at the video you actually do see all 4 of the horns. theyre on the left side of the screen next to the saxes and behind the 2nd row of clarinets

  • I poked around youtube for a good half hour to find a good version of this song which I played in HS 5 years ago. These kids are amazing! Props!

  • hey quick question guys, why at the end did the piece go back to the section where the clarinets/saxes jump between the octave?

in the piece i'm playing it goes right through to the very dramatic section with those weird chord progressions

(i hope you guys understand what i'm talking about because i have no idea what else to call those sections)

  • @DanPlaysGuitar14 im actually glad you asked. If you listen to the old guy at the beginning, he mentions that we got to play with Chance's original manuscript. When the song was published for use in school bands, the publisher cut out the section that youre hearing again. we had the edition without that section repeated but my director knew someone connected to john barnes chance (his son or something, i cant remember) and we got his original manuscript parts with the entire song on it

  • Holy Crap! You guys played this in '09? I'm at Athens Drive HS in NC and we played this piece in the same Festival this year! ('10) No offense, but I like our run better, but STILL! You guys sound pretty good! Kudos for making it to Nationals as well! Oh, and I played the Alto clarinet on this song! not as low as the Contra, but just as fun.

  • Excellent job. I especially LOVE the brass. I played this on trumpet in 1980 and it is to this day my favorite piece of music EVER!!!

  • Wow. Very well executed. Some times you hear high school bands take on pieces "just to play them" and they fall short of the composer's intentions. This performance was of the highest caliber. Balance, blend, intonation and characteristic tone qualities abound! Bravo, percussion! Very well, taught, director!

  • is he playing a contrabass or a contra-alto in Eb?

  • contra alto

our school doesnt have enough money to purchase a true contrabass so we work with what we have

  • i just recently switched to contra alto for our schools symphonic band i love this song! and i love that part, is the part written for contra bass or contra alto?

  • @jpmarano The part is written for Bb Contrabass, but I was able to transpose most of it into Eb pretty comfortably.

  • @SeekingSanctity If I remember correctly, the trick is just adding three sharps and playing the music as written.

  • I love your bass clarinet/contrabass clarinet players. I play both of those insturments and our director might consider having us play this piece. You guys did an amazing job. Keep up the good work!

  • Awesome job!!

  • thanks a lot

we worked so hard on these songs to get them up to performance level

  • This song is soooo totally pwnd!
