I'm an atheist, but this is a song with lyrics written by a truly great songwriter. To change them is one thing, but to adapt them for varying beliefs doesn't work. the line about god is truly profound and relavant to the song, and this version doesn't make any sense. The simple thog to do would be not to record it. If she recorded Glory Glory Hallelujah! what would she change -lol Mikey xx
When Gilbert O'Sullivan wrote this song, maybe he had a pretty bad time and sometimes, when we are so sad we can do nothing but ask God how can he allows those things to happen to us? That doesnt mean we do not believe in God
@MrAdamShockley You could not be more correct - except you may have underestimated by a factor or 4 or 5, in my opinion. She has a voice, yes, but she almost ruins each and every song on Ally McBeal. Vonda is the single element of that show that I do not simply love to death. I hit 'Mute' whenever I see her face. If you're over 35 and Gilbert's version does not make your eyes completely wet then you are not properly alive.
i like her version..i dont know about the original but i like what vonda does to a song.i was so young when i started watchin ally, and the songs were old,but i liked em all thanks to vonda.
miss the time when i would wait patiently for it on tv every week.
If any of you would stop and think about this for one minute instead of jumping to conclusions.... there are more lyrics missing than the God and mercy words. This was from an episode of Ally Mcbeal. It was about someone losing at love and feeling alone again! Hence: talk about LOVE and it's mercy. A number of songs by Vonda Shepard are partial or snippets because they are from the show. Some are complete because they are from albums!
The beauty of the line...about God and His Mercy and His existence is that as a Believer in Jesus Christ the Son of God, once you are able to face this challenging thought and still trust, then life is worth living and all the hardships that once before were unbearable, now are the events that build one's character and faith in God. God is God!
It's fine to be an athiest but I don't think singers typically change the lyrics to a song. If Shepherd didn't want to sing about God, then she should have selected a different song.
Look it's a great song ! And as for all this is God or isn't he shit lets clear it up ! While you are here on earth it's up to you to watch out for your own ass. Just couse your life is shit doesnt mean there isn't a God he aint here to live your life for you .
If you balme God for YOUR problems that's pretty fuck'n pethetic !
Firstly, Gilbert O'Sullivan did not write this song, ergo, he has no control over who sings it, or how they do. The song writer has that prerogrative. Secondly, if Shepard chooses not to use the word "god", who has the right to get upset????
@bobo7813...ermm actually he did write it. And she left most of the original lyrics out thereby completely bastardising the song. Why bother covering a song if you castrate the bloody thing.
I concluded that much from the comments. ;-) Still, Shepard's version on the AllyMcBeal- Soundtrack does contain the religious part. Being originally by Gilbert O'Sullivan doesn't explain why her version in this "video" does not.
I am old enough to have heard and watched the original Gilbert version. This is no disrespect, unless you consider any cover disrespectful. I guess you hated Aerosmiths "Come Together" also. Get a life why don't you. This is a classy cover. Done for a great show. Lighten up, unlike Gilbert.
@Cuzindude She leaves the religious part out the song which is the idea made from Gilbert. This is a song about god, church, faith etc, and she skips that most important part of the son.
existentialism? oh please! At least this version has removed that unpleasant suicidal part of the beginning. The song had a nice melody but the text was so annoying. Alone again NATURALLY? Naturally yes. Who would spend even just a minute with such an annoying victim as the man who speaks with the song's lyrics???
i havent heard the original version so i wouldnt know if its better or worse but i love everytime Vonda sings. i think its mainly because everytime i hear her voice, my favorite scenes from Ally rush into my head and MY GOD i love that show!
The ORIGINAL artist's POINT was his struggle with his faith in GOD due to his jaded experience with love. Who in the HELL is Vonda Shepard to REMOVE the primary subject of the song, and re-word it to her liking? She should have her ass SUED for altering the original artist's works. This version SUCKS, and is at best, a lame re-hashing by someone who didn't GET the point of the original version!
All the songs from Ally Mcbeal sung by Vonda Shepard - familiar oldies - were emotionally charged and fit the mood and context of the show. I remember this show like it was yesterday and it was the best thing on TV for me in the late 1990's. The whole series is now out on DVD! it was about time!
The song in itself is brilliant, so there's not much any vocalist can do to destroy it. I don't care for this edited version, but I'm not offended by Vonda's interpretation.
well believe it or not there are a whole lot of people in this world that dont believe in invisible, mythical, magical beings ,like god, santa claus, the easter bunny..etc. And that does not make them "ELITIST". or liberal for that matter. but i do agree this version is poor. Gilbert does it best and its one of the all time great songs ever. IMO.
lisasboogies the song is sad but then life can be sad at times cant it. And this song to me can be interpreted as a song that celebrates life as it really is. The hard part is trying to deal with the reality that the words speak to you.Gilbert does sing this with true emotion though where as vonda to me is only mouthing the words
gorgeous version of the gilbert o sullivan song.the lyrics says it all.they dont make records like this anymore.ally mcbeal itself will remain a personal fave for a long time to come.
"talk about god and his mercy , if he really does exist why did he desert me ? "
is not just one of the most beautiful lines in music, it's one of the most profound.
There's that theory that god doesn't exist, because by definition god is omnipotent (all powerful) omniscient (all-seeing) and most importantly all good. This line challenges the existence of a "God" because if god was all these things he wouldn't desert him.
@FARISM13. You are just another doubter having-a-go at God and Jesus. You know, I'm not 'holy-holy' but assholes like you will 'despise' the upsurge in radical muslims - have your 2-cents-worth about that 'threat' - then knock the religion that's ALWAYS been about peace and love. You faceless wimps annoy me.
BTW; 'omniscient' is 'all-knowing' - you got it wrong, again. You're the type that will deny Him while you're healthy then ask for His mercy on your death-bed.
@FARISM13 but,as you stated, its a theory. no-one knows what God is really like.
only that we are made in his image.
whatever that means..right?
i prefer this parable myself, and to each their own,as i understand.
when the man looked back across his life,he saw at the worst times there was only one set of footprints in the sand, and he cried out,why did you desert me lord in my hour of need?....and the Lord replied...my son, those footprints you see,are when i carried you............
@FARISM13 If God is by the definition that He encompasses the word "all" that would mean in the realm of possibilities He would both exist and not exist at the same time. That would also point toward that He is both good and evil, and these are very relative concepts whereas existence and non-existence are not. For one either exists or one does not, aside from being all things as God says He is. Gilbert has a genius line indeed.
@FARISM13 Disagree. One is never "deserted" by "God,' but the connection can be pinched off through state of mine and belief systems. That's exactly what the narrarator of the the song is doing in assuming that his mother's death is somehow a negative thing.
@novitasx A long time ago, I buried my innocent 6 year old daughter who was killed in an auto accident. Where was god and his mercy? I don't know . . . I lived and learned, that in God's eye, each of us are a very small player in on a very large stage, we give ourselves much more importance than we really carry.
