Well, in Two towers most of rohan army was in the war on borders and fords - thats where son of Theoden died. Theoden had just his guard and some riders who lived in Edoras. in The return of the king Saruman was defeated so there was no need of patrol on borders and they had got some three days to gather. In theory rohan army was up to 12 000 riders, but Theoden had 7000 in the battle of minas tirith, some riders stayed in rohan to defended it against remainings orcs.
@canuck4cup Well to be fair, the bulk of Rohan's forces near edoras and helm's deep were banished along with eomer which is why Gandalf goes to find him. Armies also need time to gather, they would need to send word to every corner of the Kingdom to raise forces. If saruman had not attacked so quickly and Rohan had time to gather an army, they would have been able to defeat Saruman's forces in the field, which is why he intended to trap them in Helm's deep.
@UNLebanon he could ride, the horse just couldn't go as fast and for as long as the other horses....at least thats what theoden says to merry in the book :)
@UNLebanon He can ride, but it's only a little short-legged pony and they are going on a long hard ride at speed. He would never have been able to keep up with them.
@UNLebanon It explains in the book... Theoden didn't want him to ride with the rohirrim because merry wouldn't make it to gondor on the small horse in time
Where did ROhan all of a second manage to get big army so fast....? when in two towers they were outnumbered
