Hey Mark..so much information I'm gonna have to lie down because my head us spinning..just wondering what you do with the original inner sleeves?..great $2 finds..can't imagine what you'd get for $3...
@stevieju heya steve, I did say in one video what I do with the originals. I keep them if they have anything on them, throw them out if they are just blank white ones. $3 = some good shit ;)
Iv allways seen the funk in your eyes. I see you really dig the CTI. Is it the pressings or the artists you likebor is there any other reason you collect them. Im just so facinated of the deadwax but dont know were to get information. I guess read on one and google. Thanx!
@SublimMedia Jonas, it's mainly the trilogy of great Freddie Hubbard LPs, Red Clay, Straight Life, and Sky Dive, that have me trying everything and everything on CTI. They are all recorded by Van Gelder, so they have that going for them. They are always really cheap, so that is a big plus - same era Blue Notes are usually double or triple in price. The catalogue is not that large, like 70+ LPs, so it conceivable to explore it all for very little money. cheers
Agreed about Pat Metheny, too. He has some great moments, but not consistently. Cornell Dupree has some pretty decent funky solo albums, too. He played with Aretha, Miles, King Curtis, and Roberta Flack, among many others - a fantastic Muscle Shoals guitarist.
Johnny "Guitar" Watson is an absolute beast. He's the guitar player in the "Blues Brothers" movie. Pearl Jam's "Johnny Guitar" is a reference to him. Steve Miller's "The Joker" is stealing from him when he talks about "the gangster of love." Even Hendrix probably stole from him. He's a mofo of a funky blues guitar player. I agree with you about that Watsonian Institutute record - you HAD to pick it up on looks alone. Lionel Hampton is a new discovery for me..very good stuff. Learnin'
Did you ever hear Johnny Guitar Watson's "Its a Real Mother For Ya"? Surprising to hear your take on Robert Ludwig and his mastering jazz albums. I cannot believe your opinion but I will take your opinion naturally. Love the Rod Stewart Never a Dull Moment release. I have that very pressing. Very cool, lots of information~
@Paneeks1960 yea Rob, sorry to surprise you. I have done shootouts of several ECM RL's vs non-RL's and the RL's always lose. I have also given these same LPs to friends to do the same with, who have no idea how to even read deadwax, but have great sound systems, and they do have all come back with the same opinion as myself. I honestly think he may have been pushing too hard with the jazz? No idea.
Awesome finds for $2. The Hubbard was worth that for the cover alone. Completely agree on your assessment of the Brecker Bros and Deodato/Airto.The vocal tune on the Brecker lp is like a throw back to the 2 lps they relased as the band Dreams with Billy Cobham. I have a Quad pressing of the Deodato and it is the same packaging. Apparently the cd relaeas dumps the Airto tunes and adds more Deodato. Have to look out for the Fathead stuff you have been finding, very interesting.
@BluesVinyl I don't mind some flute, and totally failed to mention like an idiot that the first track on the Fathead LP - "Fuzz" - has him on flute with a bitching fuzz guitar. It has its moments, but personally I cannot take two sides of it up front. tks for watching :)
Cant go wrong with Hubbard for sure. All for 2 bucks too - excellent Mark. I have a double CD comp of Guitar Watson - some is as you say, shmaltzy,-- some uncut funk. Funny how so many artists can't avoid the cheese. Love Airto! Great education as usual Mark.
Hey DrDeadWax (mark, if I remember correctly from your intro video), I really loved your video man. It's very informative, and the stuff you know about the dead was, like the initialing and all, is very very cool! So those markings in the dead wax are always representing the man who did the vinyl mastering? Thanks - Tim
@timothyjohnhenderson yup Mark, no the majority of the time there is no signature of the mastering engineer, which is why you know you might have something special if you see it.

@wertsdb71 do Blake, he had a long career and not all of it was amazing, but well worth looking at, especially his Atlantic work imho.

@xxxKevyMetalxxx again Lionel is great, have a lot of it the collection, but 45 minutes of vibes at the forefront doesn't work for me.

@tbw3100 yea, that cover is awesome! shame about that brecker, it would be a total winner without the vocal track. cheers

I agree with your Jazz flute comment. Herbie Mann is not in my collection.
Love that Jazz guitar though.
