I think they put in Magmar since there were only 5 fire types

but only Ponyta you could get in the wild as a non-starter

yeah i think that too because in pokemon d/p there were only two fire pokemon the starter one and ponyta so you must pick one of them , but in platinum you have alot of pokemon to choose ;)
