i did a review over at gadgetrock.blogspot if anyone has questions i just purchased one and have been doing testing. I have plugged both an iphone and a dsi directly in (with only a headphone splitter to monitor in headphones) and it works great!

The input is a microphone input, so you can use a dynamic mic or a condenser mic (+10 dB), but here the same input is used as a line-In. However it is not clear how much the input can take. The sensitivity is not mentioned and I guess AGC is always used.

I would like to connect my keyboard directly to the Zi8 - is it able to process that? I don't want to overload the input?

It is not in the manual.

@thedeadone1986 I checked the sennheiser site. In the video the "sennheiser ew 100-ENG g2" is used and the manual says that it has an unbalanced Line output +10dBu (EK 100 G2), which in this video is connected to the input of the Zi8. So +10 dBu is possible.

@thedeadone1986. I have not decided as well, although Zi8 should be sufficient for me. You might have a look at the AIPTEK site. They have the AHD Z700 and the much more expensive AHD H12 Extreme.

Another problem of the Zi8 is the video editing. It seems not many editors can handle the Zi8 MOV files - probably because of the audio, which is AAC LC and not AVC, which most editors can handle. Magix Movie video de Luxe 14 (to 16) however should do it. Check out on YouTube: chrisc74 editing.

Much better is to just buy a Zoom Q3. You get stereo sound built into the unit and it picks up extremely well. True stereo quality sounds due to 2 condenser mics built in. Video's not as good, but audio's much more important than HD video. And.. it's only $250.

Something tells me that if you could afford the $650 lav mic set they're using, you would be better off getting a $650 camera (Sanyo HD1000 is in that range) and spend the $180 on a good extenal shotgun mic, depending on your appplication. The shotgun mic would be better for recording groups and events.

For better or worse, it seems like an external mic will be pretty much required for good audio with the Zi8. From the clips I've seen and heard, Kodak has really downgraded the built-in mic on both the Zi8 and the Zx1 compared to the Zi6. Not only does the Zi8 sound tinny with the built-in mic, there's also a rather loud high-pitched whine. Thankfully at least the Zi8 does sound fantastic with an external mic. So far no evidence of it being able to handle true line-level audio sources, though.

The mic itself is about $20. The wireless transmitter he was using so that he wouldn't have to be right next to the camera is about $700. Just google "lav mic" and you should find some results.

It is a problem that has been fixed with the latest firmware update. That ringing noise was something that made me not want to get it, but now that I know about the firmware upgrade, I will probably end up getting it.
