  • A era on people doesn´t matter about theirs teeth.

    PS-great song!

  • anyone know what type of bass guitair he is playing?

  • @shaftsbury94 yes, a bass guitar.

  • @lillukepossy you dont know then soft lad

  • @shaftsbury94 my point being its a stupid fucking question

  • @lillukepossy It's not really though is it? It's an interesting-looking bass guitar, he/she (sorry, I'm not sure which) was simply asking if anyone knew what it was.

Here are a few other questions with a similar structure.

"What kind of dog is he?"

"What kind of car is that?"

"What kind of music is this?"

    "What flavour drink is this?"

    "What's in this soup?"

Quite how such questions can be considered stupid, I'm not so sure.

In addition, I'm afraid I don't know what bass that is. Wish I did!

  • @078584 it looks like it might be similar to the one john dalton from the kinks uses.

  • @MrPeguin666 It was originally 'lillukepossy' asking, I was just backing him/her up. I've just checked it out, it's a Gibson EB3. Nice lookin' thing!

  • @078584 'shaftsbury94' even.

  • @078584 I will go troll another video, good fight me

  • @shaftsbury94 Gibson EB3 pal.

  • @078584 thank you

  • epic!

  • thats the days when tv had good music. now its a load of shit

  • Ladies & Gentlemen please welcome the Father of Art Rock & living legend, the Great David Bowie.

  • Ah, the 70's... where men were men.

  • Who are fthe our who not only don't know this vid but who actually gave it thumbs down? I am guessing, homophobes. Don't like men with colorful clothes and long-ish hair, four-fellas? Let me guess, you are from Pakistan or Afghanistan? Let me guess even further, you are taliban and into stoning women/homosexuals people without silly beards to death?

  • happy birthday ziggy. we hope u back to sing soon

  • David Bowie is an experience that inspires and provokes exploration at everyturn.. A sensory adventure that transports one to a life less ordinary. Utterly original. Shuns convention and rejects the familiar! Seeking the road less traveled. the less obvious choice. An independant Non mainstream Musician. making the ordinary, ,,,,,,,,less ordinary. music today does non of this,,,,My opinion,,,David Bowie is Wolf,,,,,,amoungst all the sheep we have today. No Brag, just fact.

  • David Bowie is the Starman.

  • i soooooooooooo want that bass players whiskers

  • the bass player went on to star in emmerdale farm.worked behind the bar in the woolpack with his mate i think

  • Love the big fuck off sidies on the bass player!

  • david always had a twinkle in his eye! wonderful stuff.

  • Seeing this for the first time at 14 changed the way I listened to music forevermore.

  • The defining TOTP performance.... ever. Sums up the 70s perfectly.

And was the lad dancing in the hooped tank-top ever identified?? What's he doing now???

  • Makes me wish Top of the Pops was still on.

  • RIP the late Mick Ronson, a great muscian in his own right

  • I love this song and he's so cute here, but I prefer him when he's older

  • I wonder how many people know that his step sister is ann widdecombe ?

  • This is an awesome song, i feel dumb because the first time i heard it was on Walk Hard

  • He's so much beautiful...amazing song and incredible david...love u

  • I come from that time!

  • twisted lyric at 1.48 sounds like he sings me be picking my bum gentle too..

  • Better that his 3rd string was slightly out of tune too.

  • @Hellishcrusade glad i'm just a dufus to be able to spot that... how unfortunate for you.

  • i freaking love him.

  • When I grow up, I so totally wanna be like Bowie.

  • king david

  • I remember when this song first came out in 1972, i was nearly 7 years old then. Great singer great song.

  • at 1.20 whats that geek doing in the back growned lol with hes tank top on ..........

  • Quite literally a life-changing (and life enhancing) experience for this teenage lad, watching this perfomance for the first time back in 72. A love affair which lasted 10 years....................until the bank-account filling nonsense that was Let's Dance.

  • i wonder who this young boy was who seemed so happy to be in the picture !! he must be my age now !!!

  • Bowie and Ronson aside, the sideburns on the bassist demand their own cult of appreciation.

  • 2:11 <3

Him and Mick sound and look so great here!

  • when i was a child, this sure made me boogie...and still does.

  • champagne

  • Who are the two people who DIDN'T like this?

  • @runlarryrun77 probably some couple of fags!!!

  • @DocNintendo maybe one of them was the kid in the awful tank top behind Bowie there...

  • Grew up with this song, always loved it and still do!! it is incredible! Bowie still rocks~

  • if he was on AMerican Bandstand he would B dubbed. Lotza class back then. (not to knock AB it was one of my favorite childhood saturday afternoon memories)

  • thanks bluevelvetglove

  • 60's and 70's music is the best. Todays music is a load of rubbish.

  • My brain just exploded. I've dug Mick Ronson all these years and for a brief instant in this video he reminded me of Chris Crocker *rubs eyes, looks again*

  • Song doesnt seem bad, but bowie seems like a freak.. but wutever.. let him be, like i give a shit..

  • evryone thought he was was mad wears makeup, and dresses like a complete an utter wierdo but hey its david bowie who cares !

  • @burningcoldd A few years ago during a TV interview he talked about people who basically have cards with the 6 or 7 things they 'know' about him that he's weird for: bisexual, did drugs, likes cats, LOL!

  • good old memories good old days

  • thanks for posting this video

made a great impression on me when first transmitted.

thanks, david, for 35 years as a radio DJ !!!

  • From the days of brilliant music...

  • @phill90212 bowie = genius.

  • How we LOVED David Bowie's look back then. Looking at this video now, still LOVE it. HIs music is definitely timeless. I still enjoy watching the videos and hearing his music. Great!!!!

  • probably not live, ey? but what version is that, it´s not LP or single, or did they pre-record a special version for TOTP ???

  • @MrSKINFLICK

    That´s a special production

only for TOTPs at the BBC studios.

    Rainy&Ron

  • @Raindropser1 ; thanks for the enlightment !

  • rip mick ronson u where awesome and become legend

  • David Bowie's finest hour. An entire generation rocked to his fine-honed red-haried Ziggy Stardust persona.

  • This music is so modern and so well constructed. Some kind of troubadour for the masses. Now they listen to Gossip at best...

  • God...this is just SO fukkin awesome...STILL!!!!

  • Loved it then -love it now!

    David reinvented performance with this

1 thing -who is th gonk dancing in the white wank top?

  • I love the song, I love the man.

  • nice sounds. this song can cheer u up in one of the darkest days of ur life

  • u kids have no idea...when Bowie first came out here in the USA...yes..we knew immediately this wasn't some flash in the pan one hit wonder guy...this was a new fantastic day... Bowie had landed.

  • fantastic

  • gorgeous little live performance David

  • It's one of his best songs ever.. I love David Bowie! He is so amazing! ;-)

  • Still amazing after all these years x

  • i dunno where i heard this from...but did he get in trouble for not miming in totp?? cos back then everyone mimed?? i duno if thats right but i swear i heard that somewhere??

  • Hi there - I don't think that's right. Most people mimed but it was possible for one person to sing live each week - for a few years everyone had to sing live for thier first performance on the show!

  • Lol coolio! I dunno where I heard that then :S haha thanks

  • everytime i see this video i feel he's point at me

    whattttt

    1:35

  • @Weirdfiiish yeh so do i

  • i think it was the Japanese kabuki that inspired him to dye and cut his hair that way

  • @philipthe1st I read it was his wife's (ex-wife now) idea to have his hair dyed red, and at first it was a flat disaster so they had to completely redo it before they came up with the look like we see in this video, and it took about an hour to get it fixed when he would perform. I'm actually surprised he had any hair left when he quit this look.

  • The kid behind in his tank top is a perfect fashion museum icon. And the shirt he's wearing, with the rounded collar - now, what were they called? But they were the ultimate in fashion when I was in my early teens. Had to have one. So, believe it or not, that kid is well cool for the time.

  • was it a "jumbo" collar?

  • I'm not too sure, though that does ring a bell.

  • Aged 11, I thought I'd never heard anything like this before. Radio 1 used to be cool.

  • this has been bothering me for years. What the fuck has the bass player got attached to his head - silver sideburns? fluffy earrings perhaps? a bleached beard? . . . .

  • Yeah Trev's sideburns were definitely the business eh.

  • Bowie was really the man for a while back then.

  • @nitramgnal Bowie is the man now

  • Not really. Although I recognise and applaud your passion for the guy - shared by many, including myself - he was huge back then. The biggest pop star in the world at the time.

  • He's gorgeous in HD. He's gorgeous all the time.

  • Love DB and this is excellent. Thanks Mel

    for sharing this gem.

    Thanks for posting Bluevelvetglove 5****.

  • Era defining performance. Nothing was ever the same after this...Bowie is one of the true greats, not only in music but culturally too.

Just heard ballet choreographer Michael Clark on the BBC2 Edinburgh Festival show that when he saw Bowie put his arm round Ronson (1.05), it was a relevation to him as he'd only seen men touch each other when they were fighting, and that there might be "kindred spirits" out there. And what a song...!

  • Seeing Michael Clark on the Culture Show is the reason for me checking this out on Youtube too. How moving that Clark had that experience. I'm glad that there has been and continues to be men who step outside of the usual roles and look different. I like showing this kind of stuff to my kids!

  • @cds2006

David Bowie is so amazing....(and so is this song, of course :-D )

  • @cds2006 Naw, that's straight buddy contact, not an expression of any homo desire. If Bowie ever did anything for gay lib, it was only indirect and primarily through fashion transgression. He can't ever be respected as a gay icon the many he influenced, but as a pop music icon, most certainly! Bowie is a straight dude who knew how to work fashion gimmicks.

  • i always wanted a blue blue electric blue,done my head in,what a master

  • mick ronson!

  • awsome !

  • love this song

  • Mick's GOT to be there :)

  • Memories of Kensington Market, love beads and denim bags. Those were the days.

  • im still one of the children, and im still booging!

  • Good for you - life was more fun then!

  • I hope the starman comes down from the sky already....

  • David must have broken a G string. Instead of a 12 string, he's playing an 11 string. He should have borrowed a G string from one of his groupies!

  • Esa si era música de verdad, no las pendejadas que se escuchan ahora como el reggaeton y el emo (Daddy Yankee y My Chemical Romance).

  • SOOOOOOOO deep.

  • Oh yes Ziggy at his best!!

  • David Bowie <3
