Crimes against musical humanity: 1) No Steve Morse and Co. in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. To be expected I guess, any org that hasn't included RUSH yet can't be seen as completely credible
I perfectly understand that everyone has different musical tastes and we all must respect that. However, if I had my way I would hijack the airwaves during say, American Idol or America's Got Talent and everyone would be subjected to a series of Steve vids (Dregs, Kansas, Steve Morse Band) just so everyone could finally realize what talent means. Not all would care for the style, but c'mon, the skill, precision and sheer musicality. Call it a reeducation perhaps.
I think I know why Steve has played with such a select group of musicians, obviously despite his absolute kindness, I think he just intimidates the hell out of so many musicians that he sticks with those in his class. I believe he would play with anyone, any garage band and have a blast and thank you profusely for the opportunity. He's got such class, but I think everyone is scared to death of him except those in his special place in the stratosphere. Thoughts anyone?
@bigtimmy1100 I think it's more about Steve's touring schedule than anything else. Except for a small period of time when he was a commercial pilot, Steve basically spends all his time on the road playing gigs. He's been the lead guitarist for Deep Purple since 1994, which takes up the bulk of his time. That being said, he's made time to make an album with Sarah Spencer, play the Irdium Club in NYC, NAMM, and generally make good use of his time between tours with DP. Miss him and SMB terribly.
Look up professional in the dictionary and you'll see Steve and the precious few he's played with all included in a wonderful picture. No compromising with any of them. All so dedicated, professional, talented, & humble. Any young musician wanting to get started should be required to watch this. Don't forget this either, Steve and the boys dared to be great, don't be afraid to push yourselves, strive to be better, no shame in that. Love ya Steve
Why is Jerry Peek not held up with other revered bassists i.e. Jaco, Stu and Billy! This guy was mesmerizing with awesome technique and more so a great sense of timing and musicality. If anyone knows of his body of work please share with us so that we can enjoy. Thanks for posting.
I don't think Steve was an Ampeg man but that's what you have to do when you are a starving artist. At least he isn't flying planes for a living anymore. Now that he is purple, he isn't as accessible to his fans like in the old days.
@carlball1 Steve was an Ampeg man through and through; he even endorsed Ampeg for several years. He still uses his old V-4's, especially for recording. How do you think Steve got his mid-rangey tone? pure Ampeg turned all the way up!
Morse is and will always be one of the best musicans the modern world has ever produced. It's a shame that he is spending so much time with Deep Purple now. But I understand why. Pure musical genius will only starve you. It's his turn now to extract some money from the industry that took advantage of his talents. I just hope that he will continue to write and play what he is truly capable of.
Morse is doing what needs to be done for his survival. Purple is a great band for Morse to crossover to from the unprofitable progressive / fusion scene. I've seen dvds of Purple live with Morse and I've seen Morse play live many times over the decades. He's not even scratching the surface of what he can really do with a guitar /band, compared to what he's doing with Purple. But I still have great respect for him no matter what he does. I just hope that he will record his own music when he can.
Meu deus, já ouvi tanto esse show em CD, que um cara lá dos EUA me enviou, há anos atrás... e agora ver em vídeo, que emoção!! Muito obrigada! Sou fanzaça do Morse.
Oh man, tnx for posting this one! I saw this show on Ohne Filter that day as a young teen. The only thing I ever remembered was that the first song was called sth like funky chicken. Always wondered if it was a version of Pastorius' Chicken. Now, more than 25 yrs later, I finally know it was a different song! Tnx man!
Doug Morgan is the original drummer for the Steve Morse Band- originally called Morse Code. He didn't last very long before Steve called in Rod. But I think you're still right because Dave LaRue never played with Doug Morgan- just with Jerry Peek... as far as I know.
I remember seeing this on TV in 1984.
I was blown away. They are great.

Does anybody know what ever happen to Jerry Peak?
v2vroth 1 year ago 2
@v2vroth I had the same question. What he did here was so great, esp. with the clever backing chords. Where is he now? He's anyone's equal.

@rocketaxe True enough. Jerry kicks ass and takes no prisoners. He is relatively obscure, though...

Rod the smiling drummer! he still does this at all the shows

@donkeywaffle As a drumming face it's pretty good. Van Romaine looks perpetually like he's about to sneeze.

Great vid. In Northern Lights, it was weird that he skipped the parts following the scale at 5:15 and went right to the end.
