  • Thumbs up if your watching this on ubuntu 11.10

  • what is the difference between this and windows xp ? is it faster ?

  • @JDrosa1982 I have found it MUCH faster than XP it loads up programs differently than Windows and as a result it is much more efficient...

  • Excellent review!

  • it' awesome :)

  • I just tried using ubuntu 11.10 for the first time. I have never used any linux software before and I have to say; I have never been that disappointed.

First of all, it took me a good half hour to set up my dual screens because i had to go to several websites just to find out how to do that. Then installing teamspeak never worked, because my computer would crash whenever it opened the .run file (which is just a huge text file as it seems. My computer is quite powerful, too). Also no sound :(

  • @psi43 The dual screen issue has been around for a long time, they are finally sorting it out in the latest development version Ubuntu 12.04

  • ``Fun``tastic Operational system.........

  • it doesnt give me the dual option..

  • @TheChaseophercarnage Im not sure why, but it can happen in the odd few cases.

Theres a work around using the manual partitioner, have a look at my video "How to use Partition Editor in the Ubuntu Installer "

  • I think Unity is cool in 11.10 and I love it. I don't understand why people are hating it so much...

  • Its the best when you have it on your USB drive, the whole version

  • i love uinity people are just jackwagons

  • how to burn cd using ubuntu 11.10 ????

  • @keronish go to ubuntu(dot)com and there are instructions to help you out

  • Hi! For you, what linux distro is near 100% in score? Just curious :) Thanks

  • @StevanEC I think my highest rated one is Zorin OS 5 at 88%

With the way Ubuntu 12.04 is progressing I might rate that at 90%

  • are you positive there is gonna no problem with starting windows 7 just after the boot selection menu..Because a lot of information and unfinished games located my local drive and I want to try ubuntu not virtually but real machine..but other hand I dont want problems about starting windows7..

  • @spooky78 There shouldn't be, but its always best to backup everything on to an external drive just in case

  • @spooky78 I tried and ubuntu didnt load at first..... Dont know why, it loaded straight to Windows 7 Ultimate and ran a chkdsk. After it was completed system booted up and i deleted the partition and tried again. Now, Im typing this reply from ubuntu :D. Hope you get through

  • @edtdk interesting..actually I was expecting there is gonna be windows start fail..:)))

  • Alright, so I followed the tutorial. I installed Ubuntu using USB. Now, when the computer reboots, it just goes straight to Windows 7. GRUB never shows up. Can anybody help me with this problem? I've Googled tons of times, and only "can't boot to windows" shows up.

  • @klumzypinoy Hold down shift key to make Grub menu appear.

Maybe the timeout has been set to zero. Have a look at my video "Customising Grub Boot Menu in Ubuntu" and make the changes to Grub within Ubuntu.

If Shift key doesn't do anything then its possible some update from MS destroyed Grub, in which case you'll need to Google "Reinstalling Grub in Ubuntu 11.10"

  • @quidsup Thank you quidsup!! I'll try that out.

  • Im surprise when i was this part 2:54 u can divide ur partition by dragging it wow.

  • How is Ubuntu 11.10 with gaming compared to Windows 7?

  • @Steelix2007 Its fine where there are Linux versions of the games. For everything else thats what my PS3 is for

  • @quidsup I see, okay, thanks. I'm a PC gamer myself. =P

  • virtualbox

  • Dude, what is the resolution / size of your screen? I want to buy a monitor for my Ubuntu to look like yours

  • @EDUARDOGOKU1996 Its 22" 1920x1080

  • @quidsup Thanks

  • @mysteryloser24 : I had the same problem on my desktop. If you click in the VERY BOTTOM right had corner I want to say like you were going to try to re-size a window diagonally the box goes to the smaller version like shown in the video instead of full screen. Just a little tip :)

  • @chillarena Heyy. ^^ I tried that at the time, but it didn't work, which is why I asked. But I noticed that if you look at the right of the task bar at the top, you'll see the standard window controls(Close/Minimize/Maximize) with Minimize disabled. Clicking the Maximize icon does the same thing. :)

  • Can we install Ubuntu 11 on a Windows 7 TrueCrypt disk dualboot?

I also noticed that dualboot win\Ubu slows down computers because of the swap and tempfiles used.

  • @ccamstelveen I think you can, but its not straight forward. Resize the c: drive from within Windows. On the Ubuntu installer make sure Grub doesn't get installed into the default location of /sda, it should go in /sda2 or /sda5 so as not to confuse Win7 which expects to be in the first harrdrive partition.

It wouldn't make any difference on speed unless you have very little harddrive space left

  • Heyy Quids, I upgraded my 11.04 to 11.10 last night and I was just wondering hot to change the Dash size. My Dash is always fullscreen. Any advice on making it fit the corner like yours? xXx

  • @mysteryloser24 Its based on your monitor size. I've got a HD1080 monitor so the dash is smaller, whereas my netbook with its smaller resolution has the dash fullscreen

  • @quidsup Oh Ok, thanks. ^^ xXx

  • I installed it on my laptop with a Corei7 CPU, 8GB RAM and Nvidia GT555M (1GB) and runs slow... any idea why it behaves like that?

  • @DeyanBG Certainly shouldn't be slow on your system. Did you download the 64bit version?

  • @quidsup yes

  • @quidsup i have installed this on my laptop and i was wonder why runs slow, laptop specs are : Ubuntu 11.10 (Full Install along side with Win7) AMD 1.7Ghz Dual-Core, 4GB Ram, ATI Radeon HD 3200.. wonder what can i do to speed it up. thanks

  • @DrakenI78 My attempts to slim down Ubuntu have so far been a complete failure.

Use the 64bit version, I expect with a dual core your system is capable of running 64bit.

Another thing you could do is use Unity 2D which is a bit lighter than default Unity 3D

  • @quidsup thanks, i'll try that. im completely new in all this so i was wonder why the slowness on my Laptop having running W7 very smooth. thanks again

  • good review. well done

  • just wow... you're so british you shit the queen...

  • You can get money back for preinstalled Windows if you don't use it. I've got 62$ back from ACER. look up windows tax.

  • The software updater has some issues where it's not very snappy. If you try to install more than one game at a time, it doesn't queue up the pending items very quickly.

They need to include ndisgtk by default. I had to install the drivers for my RangeMax WN121T manually.

  • hi quidsup, do you have worries on anything about security issues. the common issues like viruses, malware, spyware, sniffer, cybersquat etc?

  • @lordevarts btw im talking about ubuntu itself.

  • @lordevarts Normally Im not bothered in the slightest about malware, viruses etc... I only download software from places I trust like Launchpad repos, git, Sourcefire.

For 99.9% of my web browsing I do as per normal in Ubuntu. But if Im going for some appallingly dodgy websites like the file downloaders that make you wait before letting you download then I'll use a virtual machine and let that take the hit.

To date I've only had 1 virtual machine get infected and I kind of expected it

  • @quidsup so ye saying browsing ANY file share sites in ubuntu is not safe at all?

  • @lordevarts Sorry to clarify - Those dodgy websites and I used the example of file downloaders (not torrent sites they're not so bad) with Windows you're pretty much guaranteed an infection of a forced driveby download circumventing antivirus. Its too easy in Windows and its a big target for malware.

Whereas Ubuntu doesn't have the same vulnerabilities and its a tiny unprofitable target so you go to same dodgy website but the forced download will fail.

Browsing in Ubuntu is far safer

  • Non-ubuntu: I love Cascada (Natalie Horler)

Ubuntu: Is Unity good this time?

  • @Ograws Unity is great. I've had enough off the Gnome3 apps, so Im outta here. Off to install Kubuntu...

  • @quidsup and for me Xubuntu :)

  • @quidsup i am currently on ubuntu 11.04, is it worth upgrading to 11.10? I dont really like unity, i prefer the classic gnome 2.x desktop.. Or would u recommend trying another distro?

  • @superulloabrothers Theres no rush to do anything, Ubuntu 11.04 has just under 1 year of of support left on it.

You can have the Classic in 11.10 but its no where near as good as the old Gnome 2.x desktop.

Perhaps something like Xubuntu 12.04 LTS would be a good distro to consider with its classic Gnome style?

  • @superulloabrothers

Fedora has 16 - which has gnome 3.2 - but, you can use fallback mode which goes back to gnome 2.x -like desktop.

If you aren't into redhat styled pc - pick Linux Mint or Debian instead(not sure if they have gnome).

  • Correction: there is the Gnome Classic.

  • @Victorg1997 Yes I dual boot with Win7 but thats only been a recent thing so I can learn how to use it for work.

Win7 drives me insane on how slow and difficult it is to use, and I usually run out of patience with it.

Ubuntu has been my main OS for about 2 years now and its so rare that I've not been able to do something because of Linux.

The main reasons to use Windows are because of Gaming or some specialised software, for everything else you can get by absolutely fine with Ubuntu

  • hi there, excellent video ! i find it really useful (all of your vids are). I started using Ubuntu since Ubuntu 11.04 was released, I've tried 10.10 but i didn't like it really much. I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 in my HP Mini 110 (2 gigs ram, 250 SATA hd, ATOM N270 processor) with Wubi (i just got Ubuntu installed in 17 gigs), it works great but sometimes i feel is working a little bit slow. I'm upgrading it to 11.10 and will replace windows, i'm new to Ubuntu and got familiar with it very fast:)

  • @jesuisunearme Wubi is just a testing system and I would think it will work a lot better as a full system install.

    Thanks

  • @Victorg1997 Thanks. I can imagine it would be slow with 512mb ram, Lubuntu would be better for your computer. Your English is very good

  • ATI Drivers are all messed up in the 64bit version. I'm really pissed.

  • @olddellhelp Damn I can't believe that hasn't been sorted. Thats stupid considering they did such a good job with the nVidia drivers

  • @olddellhelp YES i hate it to!! i need the drivers :S

  • @olddellhelp I have myself have given up until they get the ati drivers fixed. I had all kinds of problems with 11.10

  • @golfmc78 I preatty sure this works: sudo apt-get install fglrx

I had a few other issues, so I went to Kubuntu. So far so good. But I need a OS to work as soon as it's installed. No BS.

  • Wow, I really dislike this Unity thing. The unapologetic copycatting of OS X UI is also cringe-inducing.

  • regarding the kubuntu download the 700 meg version works just as well

  • @marcuspbaird Yeah I should have just gone with that

  • 87%? get outttaaa hereeeeeeeeeeeee. maybe 65% at most man.... be more critical. hehehhee. good vid though man. kudos

  • @Linux4UnMe lol its not that bad. I hear a lot of people complaining about being so slow, but its way faster for me. I've got a bootup time of 10 secs. I know Arch would be faster, but I couldn't get it to boot into a GUI, then I ran out patience. Cheers mate

  • @quidsup

pretty laggy for me actually... while in the Desktop. Ah you probably forgot to put the display manager in rc.conf under daemons by the sounds of it

    cheers

  • what was that fps game called ?

  • @paulhojda Xonotic. Its not available in the Software Centre, but you can download it from their website.

  • beside cosmetics what's actually different or better ? can't understand all linux distros are same time over and over again just new face or ? i dont wana troll but simply every time new distro is all u ppl do, is show me the main application witch any way u can download and use anyware or some transparency on a window... why shoud i use 11.10 insted on 10.10is same thing , nothing new witch can actualy help me :/ cant install Premiere Pro even with wine. As a new user what shoud i see appiling?

  • @trakhull Well theres nothing forcing you to upgrade from 10.10 for another 6 months. So over and above from 10.10 you get Unity desktop, more selection of apps, more up to date apps, and more hardware support.

But if 10.10 meets your requirements theres no need to upgrade

  • @quidsup i do agree with you, but for ex on win machines i can install a soft witch i use in office allso (premiere pro cs 5 ). ex, i cant find nothing witch feels like it, solid and complete. i am greatfull to linux comunity ,offering me an free alternative but there ar allso limitations and all this is couse ppl cant use there software, i wana be a linux user but i can realy on it @ work, i know fiew app that ar verry good build like gimp and ink. but a/v edit non, will apreciate a guidance

  • I like having the video in parts

  • Awesome review!!! Really good!!! Yeah the resource requirements for Ubuntu are really high now that's why I don't run Ubuntu anymore on my computers because they are quite old. I'm thinking of giving Lubuntu a go now to see how fast it is. Keep the awesome reviews up mate XD

  • @TheGeo913 Cheers. Lubuntu will certainly be a lot faster for older computers

  • @quidsup I just downloaded Lubuntu 11.10 and burned it to a cd. Yeah it's VERY fast on my computer with 512 ram XD

Yeah if I get a newer computer with a few gigs of ram I'll give Ubuntu a go :)

  • you should do a review of kubuntu 11.10 its really good much better than pclinux kde which I have been using I think ubuntu have done really well with there new versions getting most of the bugs out and getting some really good up to date distros . I found the last version didn't work so well but this version 11.10 is working really well now

  • @marcuspbaird Its next on my list. Still waiting for it to download, why did I go for the full 3gb dvd iso?

  • Tutorial on how to change back to using the Gnome Classic v2.32 styled Desktop Environment with Gnome 3 in Ubuntu 11.10.

    PLEASE!

  • @ak47razr

    Here it is mate /watch?v=5xDXeOsLQ3k

  • What works well with wine?

  • @simplewesomeness Cheese ?

  • @blackoutworm no no Cheese works fine without Wine hehe

  • @simplewesomeness All sorts of apps, theres over 3000 in the platinum rated list. Heres the top 10 list appdb(dot)winehq(dot)org/index.php

  • the new 11.10 unity run very buggy on my netbook, i prefer gnome 3 shell for now, much more stable.

  • Great review as always mate! I just installed Ocelot, and works great; just wish there would be more software, and more customizable, but overall the performance is great. It truly deserves the 87%.

    Cheers

  • @OrangesWTF Cheers mate

  • A lot of really sweet features added in this version. Great review.

  • @darkness9297 An OEM ISO of Ubuntu would be better for selling systems - It lets you install the system without setting an admin password, and leaves it for the user to choose one later.

Disks are available in the Canonical Store. Or contact your local Ubuntu group and ask them for some disks - Google "your country/state ubuntu loco"

  • thank for introducing dude.. :D

  • It was working fine for me till I tried installing the ATI drivers. Completely broke everything :(

  • @meoweo Damn thats pretty bad. Raise a bug report cos a final release shouldn't do that

  • Seems like a glitch at 9:43

  • @pschamp723 You mean the lines across the Unity Dash? It was screen capture doing that

    Cheers

  • @quidsup oh alright that's cool I guess

  • Good review there

  • Installed and its much better than 11.04 its fast looks good and I can even play Minecraft without the proprietary driver, just using the open source ones... well done Ubuntu and Conical

  • NEED HELP!: I INSTALLED UBUNTU 11.10 ON MY LAPTOP, TELLS ME TO RESTART BUT IT'S NO WHERE TO BE SEEN? (I DUAL BOOT WITH WINDOWS)

  • @KhanTutorials ok, you either did not install it (more likely) ... reboot your system with the cd in and run the installer again, if it detects an ubuntu partition, then just overwrite it (something in the bootloader went wrong) if not, then you must have just killed the installation and ubuntu was not installed ... if that is the case install ubuntu, hope that helped! :D

  • @KhanTutorials You should go to ubuntuforums . org and ask there.

  • @KhanTutorials Choose Shutdown and you'll get Restart as an option. Another way of doing it is to press the your laptop power button which will bring up the full set of shutdown options

  • Got a question. you reckon you'll make a review of the distribution as it comes without making any changes, that being min/max animations and wobbly windows and such, desktop switcher and such, i find it gives a wrong impression of what to expect, lets say a new user wanted the wobbly windows effect and doesn't understand why it doesn't work out the box. ???

  • you should use playonlinux instead of wine.

it based on wine but its doing all the configurations by itself

  • @gitlitzo playonlinux is a user friendly way to install windows software. But it's still Wine.

  • Thanks for useful information! I decided to wait another month before I update 11.04 to 11.10 ;) Ubuntu rocks!

  • @666Alexi A wise decision. I upgraded yesterday and managed to brick in no time by messing around with Compiz.

  • I always come to you for the new Ubuntu release reviews.

  • @SBPromote Cool thanks

  • ok thanks...... i installed the new version 11.10 and i wonder if the b43 cutter firmware works for the delll inspiron 1501..... after installation it didn't activate wireless driver. also i would like to know the 2 new terminal is call uxterm and xterm.

  • @MrAneudy34 I think things have changed now with broadcom drivers being put into the kernel. Not entirely sure how they're supposed work now?

xterm is another terminal app, I don't like it being there so I might see if theres a way of getting rid of it

  • great review.. i did my online upgrade from natty .. removed unity and replaced with Gnome-Shell. Unity is a bit slow for fast clicker multitasker

  • @kassych Sounds like it hasn't gone quite right on the upgrade. I would say Unity in this version is faster than in 11.04. Thanks

  • all i see is the wubi version and i don't want that.........i want like the always straight up iso file so i can burn it to a dvd.

  • @MrAneudy34 Its on there

    ubuntu(dot)com/download/ubuntu/download

I grabbed the torrent download from the list of Alternative Downloads

  • Thanks for including the Wine apps database, I had never heard of it before. Have you done a review of Gimpshop compared to Gimp?

  • @PABHERE No I haven't done anything much with Gimp. Cheers

  • thanks guys :) ..........

  • Great Video, thanks for that. But Cascada? Seriously?

  • @insanityeveryminute Their old songs were good. Cheers

  • Nice video as always...and umm... Me as always...:P...Great work BosS.. appreciating not by my hand or mouth rather by my heart...:P

  • @sabbir2world Cheers mate :-)

  • why isnt the download page of ubuntu showing the 11.10 download link

and the conter is still showing 7 hours to go

  • @sup270792 same here!

  • @sup270792 Its on there now

  • good review and nice tips thanks

  • Just upgraded to 11.10 on my netbook. A couple of system freezes, unfortunately. I may be asking too much from a single-core, Atom-based system. :) Another thing, is Gnome 3 not shipped by default? I thought it was.... Anyhow, I don't see it as an option in the Grub login options.

  • @ellisbooker9 You should of waited until canonical updated their site to show 11.10 is available for download. You just upgraded to a daily build of oneric.

Gnome 3 should on the login screen for you to select if not it show be in the software centre. Gnome 3 will also be included when the final is released.

  • @ellisbooker9 No Gnome3 isn't on there by default, you need to install gnome-shell

  • @quidsup Gnome3 is there ... gnome-shell is not; gnome-shell is a UI for Gnome3

  • Great Review of 11.10 - Thanks.

  • @OmenX13 Cheers mate

  • Great! video,

    Cheers,

  • @TheKC1ML Cheers

  • quidsup where did you get the rocking flame wallpaper. If you can post a link because I love FIRE. Also thanks for the quick compiz tutorial. I can't wait for the newest release.

  • @calebking229 Just added the links to the description. Cheers

  • @quidsup thanks I've been following your updates on Oscelot since beta 1

  • Nice video quids but Im using and lovin Pinguy much better for me an crappy unity :)

  • @icyos Agreed. Pinguy is great. That's really where people Should start with linux. Everything works and has been tweaked and installed for you.

  • Great video quids. I hope all new users like this OS, but as you said you need some newer hardware to run it. I think it would be best to have an external video card as well as a system with greater than 2 gigs of ram. my verdict, run 10.04. :)

  • @rotaryboy I think a fairly new netbook with 1Gb ddr3 ram will run it (still gotta try it on mine). But yeah for best use it will be a reasonable external graphics card and at least 2Gb ram. Cheers

  • @quidsup Yeah I have tried unity 3d it on my nvidia 1024 MB on board video card it's not so great. I tried gnome 3 via ppa that broke my unity WM. It's a great OS, make dep is awesome and you don't have to tinker with it as much as Debian to make it work.

  • is the 13th and i went to ubuntu homepage and they did not put the new version...... when is it coming out @ what time?

  • @MrAneudy34 they usually come out at the end of the month.

    So give it two weeks.

  • @MrAneudy34 Looks like 18.00 UTC, so about 8 and a half hours from now

  • Great video Quids!

  • couldn't of done it better my self =)

  • @KhanTutorials Cheers mate

  • *** If you are interested in gaming on Ubuntu, go to Jakejw93 's channel ***

  • Great review! Fav'ed, like'd and subscribed... oh wait a minute.. I am already.

  • @SeltsamerAttraktor lol cheers mate

  • If you remove the root drive (and you don't have your home folder as a drive in wine), you will not be able to open files from your file manager using a wine program. The files you want to open must be accessible through one drive or the other.

  • @SeltsamerAttraktor Perhaps I should have shown recreating a new drive for /home folder?

My preference is to limit Wines access to the root folder

  • @quidsup Yeah I usually limit its access too. But only in specific games/programs within some POL prefix, where those programs don't need it.

  • Wine alone is a poor advice. It really takes PlayOnLinux or CrossOver.

  • @SeltsamerAttraktor True but I didn't really want to go into too much detail about Wine the alternatives.

I've not been too keen with POL lately theres a couple of games with POL scripts that wouldn't work properly, but under stock version of Wine they worked fine

  • @quidsup Most POL scripts are of a poor quality, unfortunately. For example, many put a "cd [..]/drive_c/Program Files/Program/"; wine program.exe" in the start script (instead of reading it from the registry), which is very n00bish. If you change the folder or if the program isn't in English, it won't work. That is why I always give the advice to ignore them,if it won't work. It's better to do research about the program first (app hq, reading the pol script), and then try it for yourself.

  • Is there a way to disable the global menu?

  • @SeltsamerAttraktor Not that I know of within Unity. Moving to Shell or Classic will get rid of it

  • Excellent timing Quids!

Just backing up files in order to install Ubuntu 11.10. I've been using Linux Mint 10 KDE & it's been great but for some reason the volume control freezes now! It has work great up until a few days ago. I think an update (probably a flash one) messed things up. Goes wrong when I play any type of video. Only just happened.

This volume thing has given me the insensitive to try 11.10. I did try 11.4 but wasn't too keen on it.

  • @mousegeek lol yeah good timing, hopefully 11.10 will be nice & stable. Cheers mate.

  • So it's actually Quids Up and not Quid Sup.

  • @SeltsamerAttraktor Yes its Quids Up. Quids is slang for UK £
