  • your so good at this and fast too, wow

  • Great video--but please learn the proper pronunciation for picot!!

  • HI! THANK YOU FOR YOUR QUICK RESPONSE!! I FOUND THE WAY TO MAKE MYSELF A NEEDLE FOR TATTING!! I FOUND IT IN A BLOG FROM A GIRL FROM ANDALUCIA, SPAIN, HER NAME IS ISABEL, AND SHE SHOWS A NUMBER OF TATTING NEEDLES THAT SHE MADE HERSELF, GREAT IDEA!!! SO, I MADE ONE FROM A LITTLE WOODEN STICK AND MADE A LITTLE HOLE ON THE OTHER END!!! NOW COMES THE NON EASY PART: TO TAT!!! PRACTISE, PRACTISE!!!

  • Hi!! I am from Argentina and we don't have tatting needles, what other needle can I use??

I will really appreciate your advice. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

  • @leandroc2011 Hi! What makes a tatting needle special is it's blunt end, length and that it does not change thickness at the eye. Most other needles do. I've heard tale that some people use long doll needles and they sand the tip down. You can find tatting needles online through Amazon.

  • wow i only knit and somewhat crochet is is beautiful!

  • Hello,

at 2.29 you join the second ring to the first ring, but I can't really see how you do it. Um, you pick up the thread and then there are 6 ds followed, but is the thread you picked up the first part of a ds or not?

    Thank you, Babs

  • @willowke You're pulling the working thread through the picot and placing it on the needle and then you continue with the ds's. This can also be done using a crochet hook.

  • thx. whered u get ur tatting neeedle?

  • @steakwolf9 You cam get them on amazon, overstock, hhtatting and lacis.

  • whats the difference between a tatting needle and a sewing needle? couldn't u just use a sewing needle for needle tatting?

  • @steakwolf9 There are a few important differences, a tatting needle is fairly dull, not sharp like a sewing needle and more importantly the width of the tatting needle is the same across the whole length, not widening at the eye, this allows the stitches to slide off easily.

  • that is soooo cool! i dont know how to needle tat but i would like to learn.

  • WOW! Fascinating@! I am going to have to give it a go. Picot is pronounced Pee co as in Cost-co ...it's French I believe. Well done!

  • that is sooooooo cool!!!! thank you for sharing.

  • Excellent! A mesmerizing video. I appreciate you slowed when you needed to and went quick when you could. I have needles on order and cannot wait until I get them! Thank you so much.

  • Great video - I just finished my pendant, also my first tatting project. Got my needles at Hobby Lobby, in case anyone needs to know where to find them offline.

  • I'm starting a jewellery making/needle tatting class in a couple of weeks, it seems fun!

  • This is wonderful!!! thank you so much for posting this!! I'm trying to learn tatting (particularly beaded tatting) on my own, and the books are NOT cutting it! I can't tell you how awful and frustrating it's been. Thank you *tons* for posting this. It is very generous and kind of you and I'm very appreciative. :-)

  • OMG I finally did it. I made my first flower... I wasn't able to catch on with the shuttle. But with your tutorial and a needle (and the pause button... lol) I was able to get it done. Now I can go home and teach my daughter.

    THANKS SO MUCH!

  • Thank you for this great video, it makes me so eager to try making my first needle tatting flower:)

  • I just ordered tatting needles from lacis.com, but I couldn't wait to try this (you make it look so easy). So, I used the longest needle I had on hand. It worked ok for a first attempt at tatting. Thank you so much for making this tutorial!

  • Thanks to your wonderful tutorial I finally understand how to make rings and chains. The first site I used didn't explain chains, yet had patterns with chains! Thank you so much for this!

  • Wow, I just learned shuttle tatting, but I think I'll take up needle tatting too. It looks like it's much easier to catch and correct mistakes. Hey, you may have made me a convert!

  • you can get a lot of this stuff on Ebay cheap! thanks this is great!

  • hobby lobby has some doll needles that will work on the sewing's notions wall, or there are really long tapastry needles.

  • Thank you so much for the great instruction! I made a pair of earring from 2 flowers. I have a question...if we use "ring and thread" method to connect rings, do we have to cut the thread from the ball??? I tried this a few times and didn't go well...can you please let me know?

  • Can you do a continious flower pattern? Dont tie it off...just keep going with it...:)

  • Is it easier to do tatting using a needle or a shuttle?

  • Thank You soooo much for this easy video. I just started doing tatting & with your video, I just did my first flower!!! It's alittle off...but pratice makes perfect...:)

  • thanks so much. can't wait to try it out!

  • Thank You!!! :)))

  • رائع جدا الف شكر

  • Thanks for the video. It was pretty easy to follow (although my first try doesn't resemble yours at all LOL). I am having a bit of a problem when I slide the stitches off the end of the needle. I keep ending up with the thread knotted and unable to get the need through the loop. I AM using a rather long needle (until I order some), do you think that might be it or am I doing something wrong? I had the best luck putting the head of the needle through the loop before taking the stitches off.

  • Nice tutorial. It was a bit painful to hear you pronounce the "T" in picot the whole time though. :/

  • I just made this flower, and I am so pleased with it. Thank you so much for the video. I'm so thankful to you and those like you who share their expertise.

  • CATHERINETTE RING! and this is amazing! i can't find a tatting needle though. where do you get them? I understand the concept now i just have to try! i found you on etsy then stumbled upon your instructable and stalked you to here! thank you soooo much!

  • @CADIlolxD Thanks! You can find needles at some craft shops, but I get mine online. I've found them at Amazon, Overstock and hhtatting

  • @CADIlolxD

You can find them online at Walmart and Hobby Lobby. $12 for the set of 4 needles.

@TotusMel - I love your videos but the T is silent in the word picot. It is NOT pronounced pea-cot. It is pronounced pea-co. The T is silent. I love your videos but can't watch them for long because it drives me bonkers when picot is pronounced wrong. *shudders*

  • Thanks so much for the video! I have always wanted to learn how to do this ever since my husband's great aunt gave me a tatted card. GREAT TUTORIAL! I have seen your other videos with no sound and they are also fantastic for understanding how to do the basics of this technique. Please keep doing them!

  • I find that your video isn't beneficial past the first minute because you go too quickly. It's so frustrating, trying to learn a new craft and the supposed best video for beginners(you're recommended, believe it or not) and having to repeatedly go back and back in the video trying to unravel how in the world to do something. You need to either slow down or reconsider making videos. Not everyone-especially beginners-can keep up with what apparently is your perception of slow.

  • I loved all your videos. I'd love to give it a try now. Thanks! More videos would be greatly appreciated!

  • Woohoo! I've never been able to "get" tatting before; you've made it make sense! I love you for this, so much!

  • Thanks so much! I'd never attempted tatting before, and I was happily surprised to be able to pull this off! It was really fun, and I hope to keep learning!

  • Thank you so much for posting this video! I was struggling with the RW transition, creating sloppy flowers. After many attempts, I almost gave up. This video cleared up my confusion and was amazingly helpful! Thanks!

  • I've tried tatting a couple of times before, the instructions that I used were not for beginners eventhough the book stated that it was for beginners. Your instructions are vrey clear and easy. I just finished the pendant that you demonstrated. It took me a few minutes and got it right on the first try! Thank you. Looking forward to more of your instuctional videos.

  • TotusMel your instructional video is excellent, you are a talented teacher with fine speech and communication skills and a pleasant sounding vocal pitch. In this video I feel you have given me the 'head start' needed to accomplish other patterns.Incidentally I plan to incorporate these embellishments into my card making, which is actually the reason I began looking for this type of 'needlework' after inheriting a small of stack of precious handmade gift cards...so thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • What a joy to watch your video!!! I am a shuttle tatter and have never considered trying needle tatting. That seemed to go fast! But I must confess, I can't give up using my Great Grandmother's very old and priceless tatting shuttles. Yet. I don't know where to get a tatting needle. Is this something that you can get at AC Moore? Thanks so much for sharing!

  • Well, it only took me four tries, but I did it! :) Thank you, TotusMel, for the great tutorial!

  • I am very new to tatting - my question is - how long of a tail do you have? maybe I am doing it wrong but every time I try this it uses up the tail and can you go wrong if you do not turn each section of the flower the right way? I haven't been able to finish one of these yet but I will keep trying - not sure why I am having such trouble...

  • @Penlou3 For the flower you only need maybe a foot of tail thread. My best guess for what is going wrong for you is that you are tatting with the tail thread and not the ball thread. The tail thread in this method is only for pulling the stitches onto and all your stitches should be made with the ball thread. As for turning the wrong way, I'm not sure you can as long as you turn over the work, tie a knot and continue working with the ball thread.

  • I do have a couple of questions (ran out of room in the last comment): 1) To make this into a pendant, would you stiffen it with something or leave it the way it is? and 2) About tatting needles - what are the ends like? I couldn't find them at Michael's so I bought doll needles; they were the longest ones I could find without a big eye (my tapestry needles didn't work; the eye wouldn't go through the stitches). But they're sharp! and I'd rather not wear the skin off on my fingertips! Thanks!

  • Somebody on Craftster posted pictures of some beautiful tatted jewelry. She said she was just a beginner. I thought, "Wow, I need to try this." The first web page I found had instructions I couldn't understand, so I went looking on YouTube for videos. Found your silent one and watched it, thinking "those are just half hitches. I can do that!" Well, it wasn't *quite* that easy. But this video, with your explanations, definitely helps. Time to try again! (PS Your blog is great too. I've RSS'd it)

  • Lovely tutorial! Just wanted to let you know the word picot is pronounced like peecoh. It's a french word so the the t is silent :) Just thought I'd mention it.

  • So easy to understand and to MEMORIZE - I have done another last night on the bus and almost done with one I started on the way to work this morning - BRAVO TOTUSMEL.

And I made the other necklace at home last night - the one that's a tweak on something you have at Etsy - starts with an "F" - Italian sounding, having a Keanu moment and can't remember it - instructions VERY clear and the necklace looks great, even my wobbly take 1 version!!! You're awesome.

  • Whoo-hoo, I just finished my first flower!!! Thanks so much for the easy-to-remember pattern, totusmel. I used sport weight cotton and an altered weaving needle to do mine, but will make many more with the crochet/tatting thread and smaller needles.

  • @wirewoman Congrats! I'm so glad I could be some help and good luck creating!

  • Awesome, TotusMel. I just started needle tatting over the Labor Day weekend; taught myself from Barbara Foster's book and saw your lovely pattern and downloaded it for challenge and inspiration.

I was confused about the whole "teardrop - tying the know" thing, but now that I've seen the video it is very clear. I'm going to make a pendant this afternoon.

Thank you so much for your work!! And the pieces on your blog are lovely, particularly the masks.

  • I have tried a million times to follow this video. I think you're going a little fast from the ring to the chain. Every time I pull the chain through, it turns into a ring. From where do you pull the thread for the chain?

  • @CantrellMS The only difference between a ring and chain is you do not put the needle trough the loop for a chain, you simply pull through the needle thread.

  • @TotusMel Clearly its not that simple because I keep getting rings. Are you switching threads from the needle to the ball and back?

  • @CantrellMS Not at all. Both the rings and chain stitches are formed with the ball thread on the needle and pulled off the needle onto the needle thread. The only difference is that the chain is just pulled straight through and the ring required you to pull the needle through the loop to bring the thread back to the beginning.

  • Question. How do I go about finding your instructable?

  • thank you so much. I'll be off to Hobby Lobby tomorrow.

  • Wow you are awesome! Thanks for responding to me. I think I might have the idea. Needle tatting looks a little less complicated than what I've watched using the shuttle.

Just so I know when I go to the store.... I purchase a tatting needle? Are they all the same or do you recommend a specific length. I'm definitely going to go check out your instructables. Thank you so much. Maureen

  • @momac929 I suggest starting with a size 5 needle and size 10 thread. Often you'll find a set of needles and that has a 5 in it.

  • Your written directions were good, but now that I see the video, I completely understand what I was doing wrong! :-) Great video, great directions. You make it look very doable. Thanks for posting it!

  • I'm just getting started, and this is a huge help. Thanks!

  • This is a great video. I have been thinking about learning how to do this and your video is easy to follow and you explain things so well. Please keep the videos coming with more desings. Thank you for the ones you have already done as well :D

P.S.- How would you do another layer to the pendant or can you not do that?

  • @KalenaWylesky Thanks so much. You can add another row of petals by either joining into the picots or by joining the thread between the chains, you'll have to experiment with the number of stitches to get a nice design.

  • Oh goodness. I just finished making my first pendant this about 5 minutes ago! Great video by the way!

  • @apricotzombie That's great & Thanks!

  • @TotusMel P.S. I really love your tutorials! You have the coolest designs, and you are really good at explaining the steps. I hope you continue the awesome work!
