  • So does this prove we definately went to the moon in 69 then ?

  • On long time ago I realized that the only way this song makes any sense is as an inside trade joke. I am sorry that breaks the spell of all that faux symbolism, but that is what was needed to pull it off in the 60's. Imagine a backroom scene: A: 'It used to be so easy to write a hit, all you had to do is rhyme June, Moon and Spoon and Voila! A Hit.' B: 'Still works' A: 'Sure ... what to you want to bet on it' B: (wager of your choice here) A: 'You're on!' .... 'A' lost the wager as we see.

  • Lovely song , shame it's sang by a nonce .......... shame we got rid of hanging .

  • nice Mime job. I said mime, not blow!

  • So soothing, so beautiful....so I'm so nostalgic....

  • I love this song, reminds me of when i was a child, sad how he ended up,

  • @BOON601 i was a teenager back in the sixies i bought this record because of the unusual lyrics

  • This pervert should have been hanged and if he had done what he had done to one of my sons I would have hanged him myself.

  • ive heard we might not have actually landed on the moon

  • Where did all the innocence go? .. everyone's .. your's, mine, Jonathan King's ... to the moon I guess.

  • This is a good song i like it but i and a lot who i know dont know what it is supposed to be about.

  • my mom used to sing this song to me as a child

  • Has taken me back to when it first hit the charts........still a song.

  • it does send a shiver down my spine

  • I love this song--so pleasant to hear when as a little boy.

Too bad Mr. King later got wayward, served prison time.

  • One of my favorite tunes, despite the sad message.

  • Easily one of my favorite all-time songs....

  • Also my mom passed away 17 years ago last week .I can"t still remember her singing song .I was 11 years old when it came out .But it was one of those

songs you and your parent could like alot !!

  • I'v been showing this video around .This came out i think in 1965 .My son Jonathan who was born in 1990,and is 20 years old now ,look"s just like Jonathan King .My son is very Retha 60"s He even dresses"s like him with the Glass"s and all .My son dosn"t know him or the song .When i showed him this Video he nearly fall over ! They could be twins !!

  • @Mrveendam Yes the song came out in Dec 1965 (in the L.A. area, anyway)

  • Beautifully orchestrated, haunting melody and lyrics. I have always loved this song ever since it came out. I still do. The story is great too since I love sci fi.

  • I liked it at 15 and still at 61yrs!

    Tks for posting.

  • I actually think "Vile Pervert" is JK's Magnus Opus. This is a nice song, but it's too sweet and innocent. The music he did for Vile Pervert kicks ass. He should be thankful to the haters, they gave him something to say.

  • Some may find it 'easy' to forget the vile crimes that King was convicted of, but not his victims. King was convicted in a trial by jury, of serious sex offences on young boys, and was released from prison after serving just half of a 7 year sentence.

Those crimes should not be forgotten. King however, should be resigned to a period in the dark past of the nation, never to be resurrected.

  • He's a damn pervert! But this song is just amazing! Makes you think.

  • Creepy yet scary but lovely and back when it came out you could almost feel the erie nature of it when this was much more a scary though in the minds of an 11 year old kid listening to it on the old AM radio.I recall looking up to the dark sky one night while it was playing thinking "could this really happen here in Massapequa Park NY-LI"?

  • the moon the only place to be!

  • This is when he looked like Jarvis Cocker - sorry Jarvis, I am not comparing you to this vile pervert.

  • A daring tune in the middle of the "yeah yeah" times. Was kind of a success and stayed that way. Thanks, Jonathan King.

  • good song. but around 1:32 he looks like he really has to go to the bathroom.

  • this is one of my favorite 60s songs, thanks anitashelby & willybeable

  • AbsolutIely a song to remember ... '65 was still such an innocent era in many ways ...

... and this song didn't give me then tooooo much of the words meanings, yet I remember 1st hearing it was through a transitor radio as I was sitting on a field where poppies heads were swaying in the summer breeze... very enjoyable.

5 stars for this terrific share ... thanks from Budapest

  • @laggie24

what a beautifuk description of a memory..........thanks from bigpaws in wales.

  • Sounds like so many british (folk) invasion songs of the 60s. like it!

interesting record business fellow tho: Genesis, Bay City Rollers, 10CC. ...but what's this about underaged boys CONVICTION?

  • freak

  • Oh dear. Undergraduate tosh.

  • This song is a true masterpiece.

  • he was so cute.

  • Never knew all the lyrics to this song ( everyone thought it something different) but I loved it as a young teen. Something ethereal about it.

  • looks like Jimmy Saville and top of the pops.... cute little song at the time, lyrics dont not match the perv JK is...

  • Who would have guessed that creepy looking jewish child-rapists make such lousy music?

  • @ichbineintoober - As a Jew, I don't think he looks it . The facts of the cases were sketchy at best.

  • Ahhhh!, 1965, I was at junior school, and we weren't stabbing each other to death like today,...... the good old days.

  • Completely baffled that this is posted. it was a haunting tune yet exciting my 4 year old brain at the time with the magic of the 60's Moon Quest. Can anyone remember the time of hope and astonishment at just going to the moon!! This was simple and sappy and if released in 69 would have been a fad but in 65 it is just eerily progressive. If you like this song along with "In the Year 2525" and you love Gort and Robbie the robots and Robot Fighter Magnus .. you are probably my soul mate ..

  • what perverted antics was this bastard convicted of?

  • heard this by Chad & jeremy, but, this is the guy that I originally remember. He was a square kind of looking guy, but,he recorded a lovely song.Kind of sad/sweet.

  • Its like drowning in Treacle.

  • I Miss 1965!

  • .....HOW CAN ANYONE NOT LOVE THIS SONG!!! ONE OF THE BEST POP 60's TUNES OF ALL TIME!!! Jonathan is so so nerdy looking, but I still LOVE THIS MAN!!! *****STARS! Peace from PA USA.

  • does anyone know what the flip side of this 45 was? this tune was the minor and the reverse was jonathan's hit at the time. thank you.

  • @jacki1961

The B side was a track called Round, Round

  • @redjessica ahhh... thank you....i stand corrected. that tune was the minor and the A side was the hit. hey i was very young at the time and my memory can get a little mixed up. lol thank you

  • @jacki1961 The original B side was Summer's Coming, also covered my Marlene Dietrich

  • American Idol should have this talent--but Doesnt!!

  • I never could figure out the meaning of the song, but it is still a classic, Too bad the guy turned out to be a pervert.

  • I suspect the glasses are meant to be "Buddy Holly-ish"

  • Comment removed

  • Great song and voice....but those glasses!

Woody Allen called, he wants his gasses back.

Too bad he didn't become a bigger star.

  • @Phil4545 J. King preferred to be a producer and promoter rather than a singer.

  • Not sure if this was 65 or 66 but I loved it and remember dancing to it with that special boy. Love the violins. That was a great slow song.

  • haunting lyrics and melody.. love it

  • This guy went to jail for bumming young boys up the ass

  • I love this song - great stuff Jonathan. Anyone who can write and sing such a beautiful song has a good soul. And you have a good soul....

  • I bet Ralph Krandon whished he had this song on The Honeymooners, maybe Alice is thankful as well as Trixi and Ed Norton.

  • nice to see an arsole bandit in his early years.

Nice to see Jimmy at the start......

  • who let all these bees in here? this place is full of BEES!!!!

  • shoved his napper up an early teenagers males tortoise home he got convicted of. Oh dear Jonathan, the wonders of a private education, and being "recruited" to the beeb, the home of old colonial perverts. Fan me, serventide.

  • Lol this is the funniest post i ever so....

  • @SuperKingspin Well, I am the best comedian, in my bedroom.....

    : )

  • This is one that transports one to the past. Gentle and melancholy song.

  • Always loved this song~

  • Nice song. Brings back many memories. I've heard different versions but this one's the best.

  • good tune, thanks for sharing

  • nobody stop that freak mj songs from being played cause he had money. i think this is better then jacksons

  • This was a great 7th grade tune back in around 1965 bringing back nice memories--remember this was about the first great song we began to dance close at around 13. An innocent tune, lyrics, and time--at an innocent time in our lives--regardless of what this guy did.

    Bill

  • This is a very different kind of song; it has a very different sort of sound to it. If you were raised in the 60s, this song certainly brings back a lot of memories. A previous poster made mention of the strings arrangement and I agree; you're right. I've never quite heard a song like this, ever. I think he did a great job on it. Thanks for posting it.

  • @dtcs1958 Buddy Holly started using strings on pop songs with True Love Ways, Love Is Strange, and Dearest and then the British Invasion happened which brought you The Beatles, Peter & Gordon, Chad & Jeremy who followed Buddy Holly's lead by making records with string arrangements! This song reminds me of What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong and Exclusive Butterfly of Love by Bob Lind! A Summer's Place went number one in 1960, along with Tel star America's answer to Sputnik! :)

  • A beautiful song unfortunately sang by a not-so-beautiful person?

  • perv

  • convicted of sexually assaulting five teenage boys, aged 14 to 16, between 1983 and 1989.

  • 1:59 = Umm, people...helllllo. You can't dance to this, so don't even try. Just stand there and be creeped out. Creepy guy, creepy tune.

  • In November 2000, King was charged with sexual offences dating back to the early 1970s. ---- this is from wikipedia!!!!!

  • Interesting slowly reaction:-)

  • i agree lol

  • Nomatter what you think of him, this was the most beautiful song, a haunting melody that brings back floods of memories, leaving school in June 1965.

  • lol at the lyrics

  • Utterly stupendous record, covered at that time (and again recently) by Chad And Jeremy. The flip side on the original Jonathan King 45, "Summer's Coming" is equally mesmerizing.

  • 45 years old and still sounds great. Thanks

  • What a strange little tune, we thought, when this song came out. Liked it then, like it still and always will.

  • funny thing--sings a good song--must be that good part of him.

  • yes it is a good tune

  • Beautiful song...the instrumentations are beyond great

  • Such a beautiful song.

  • and they all went to the moon?----they did to-

  • whatever tragedy there may be this is a great sing, Beautiful sing. this doo wop/rocknrollhistorian lived thru these tears 50s-present ive eard it all. but this is an exceptionally sweet innocent sing wuth raw emotional power. thanks Jonathan King. TOMK a man who knows great music

  • who gives a shit what he did? its a good tune.

micheal jackson slept with little boys too. but you cant take away his talent because he was a pervert. i wonder what skeletons you have in your closet mr. ironbuttermilk. leave the fag alone. its a good tune.

  • I'm afraid he's a cynical bastard and convicted sex offender. A 39 year old exploiting a 14 year old is awful. The new film about him I haven't seen yet, but I don't hold out much hope of it really making him appear in a brighter light. We'll see.

  • one of my all time favorites, "VIVA" the moon!!!

  • The "funny man" is former BBC pop DJ Jimmy Saville (who's still with us though well into his 80s). The clip would be from a 1965 broadcast of "Top of the Pops".

  • WOW what a great song! I cant stop playing it.

  • Fucking hell :(

  • He sings this better than anyone else i have heard singing it. A really superb tune sung very nice..

  • backing 10 singer 1 for trying

  • i always thought chad and jeremy sang this song.

  • Chad And Jeremy covered it on one of their albums, but Jonathan King's version is the original. Chad And Jeremy recently re-recorded it.

  • I've always loved the orchestration on ths...

  • a great song from the 60s

  • pure genius from The King - and pop's 3rd (or 4th) most famous nonce

  • That is what billions of people were doing indirectly doing 40 years ago today.

  • It's a wonder they didn't send him to the moon. (;o)

  • is right

  • The lyrics totally apply to what's happening in the US right now.

  • 久しぶりに聴きます、ああ懐かしい! コザ24より

  • I think I was in high school when I last heard this.

  • Does anyone know the name of the funny man with the Doris-Day-He-Man-like Haircut who appears in the beginning of the video in the left side of the picture??? :-)

  • jimmy saville

  • cool! thanx alot, mate! =)

  • he's an old man,now,,good charity worker

  • Very 60's this song. I was in grade 6 when it came out and wasn't quite sure what it was saying, but somehow knew it had to do with materialism and peace, love, etc. I just wasn't sure exactly what it was saying, but I loved it...especially the last line "arms that can only lift a spoon" which reminded me of my baby brother...

  • Its the string arrangements that make this song so beautiful. It reminds me of the 60s so much freedom and hippies and love all around unlike today, oh well one can always dream I suppose.

  • great job

  • oops i love the moon IMAO lol

  • i love yhe moon IMAO lol

  • Commenting purely on the song you would have to say,its a decent song

  • This is the guy who plays with little lads willys ?. Good song though...

  • Hitler's records don't get much airplay, though. Which is a pity, considering his beautiful singing voice. And he could dance the pants off Churchill.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for posting the video. I was curious what the guy looked like. I have heard this song thousands of times, don't understand it any more today than I did when I heard it the first time, and I still love it. I still hear it on the air waves every once in a while.

  • That's easy to say when it is not your child getting poked in the ass

  • Great song! Although the singer looks like he should own a red car named Christine.

  • He does look the guy from Christine well done you have a very good eye now tell me who I look like :-)

  • same today as it was yesterday-hauntingly beautiful!

  • Great song.

  • A brilliant song, perfectly crafted, that is as relevant today as it was 45 years ago. Thank you Jonathan. I only wish it was played more on the radio.

  • It's not played today because he was convicted of molesting small boys and the radio don't want to be seen condoning that nor let him make money on royalties.

  • it's PARKS full of motors - I should know; I wrote it!

  • Great music...

  • I loved this as a kid. I still do. Its a strange kind of song but its great. 5*****

  • Love this song

  • Is it hearts or parks?

  • Actually it's cars full of motors painted green. A great song that doesn't get any air time on the oldies stations anymore. Too bad.

  • still a classic
