I recently bought this external drive on sale. my computer takes esata and usb 3.0 so if i took it out could i put it in an external case? If i could what size case do i get?
Thank you so much for this video! My power cord frayed to the point where it wouldn't work, so I had to get that drive out to put in a new enclosure, and this video really helped!
Just figured i would let everyone know that is doing this... It does VOID your warranty with Seagate to do so. We do watch to see if customers are doing this and we do void the warranty if you did not have the permission to do so by Seagate.
@thowell2989 There are no tampering indicators (like stickers that rip when you take the drive apart). So long as you don't damage the plastic case, there's no way to know the drive has been opened. Warranty is intact so long as you don't replace the drive with another one.
@thowell2989 I just checked with Seagate (30 minute hold) and if the drive is under warranty, and you need to backup the data, AND you tell them you have to get into the drive, they will put in the notes that the case may be apart when they receive it, so it doesn't void the warranty.
my seagate is still under warranty and a piece that holds the usb cord in place fell inside. they said if i can open up and retrieve the files they won't void my warranty bc i told them ahead of time. once i follow your video, what would i do next to get my files? thanks
@gurlzgotskillz52 plug it in as another hard drive. if you call seagate and its still under warranty they will send you a new hd, get your credit card number (just in case you dont send the old one back) and then you can get permission to open the case to get your data back...
@maxythecuber No I think the PS3 slim uses 2.5" diameter disks. Your best bet are the new 750GB 2.5" hard drives, such as the Seagate Momentus 750GB 7200RPM drive..
@maxythecuber Oh sorry I thought I was responding to a different comment. Yes you can get a 5400RPM laptop drive (2.5"), but why would you? The 7200RPM drives don't take that much more power and are a lot faster. 5400RPM is still only up to 750GB just like the 7200RPM type.
hey i have a problem with mine. ive had it for maybe 2 years now. when i plug in the usb into my laptop it works for like 10 seconds then it doesnt recognize it anymore. is the problem from the usb or the hard drive itself. any solutions?

Seems as if you can just open it up and figure it out as you go. Once you get it open, can't you put it in another enclosure that has a firewire port? @royce321 Ya I got one today, they've come down in price alot lately. I was mostly wondering if they're IDE or SATA. From the look of this video looks like it's IDE
@LisaArinWolf The hard drive is SATA, from the Freeagent Desk 500GB and up, so to answer everyones question YES IT'S A REGULAR SATA DRIVE IN THERE! No you don't need to do anything to make it work in your computer, remove from enclosure, connect in computer, boom, all your data is there, everything works great.
@toysareforboys1 Ahh okie thanks. It was kinda hard to tell in the video. I actually did pop open the case on mine, a 1.5GB Freebird and saw it was SATA, but my PS doesn't have a SATA connector so I'll have to get an adapter or new PS.
@toysareforboys1 Hello there, need some assistance please??? Ok here's the deal - I gots me a Seagate 1TB external hard drive from an electrical store back in April 2009.. All was well until I'm hearing bits inside the external, sounds like either plastic bits or components are loose, as when I tilt it or carry it around with me it makes noise-I've never dropped it..!! Now my Seagate works fine, it reads on my Laptop & PS3 fine-I'm paranoid that it might go to kaput in the future, any advice..??
@almightytrent I got it to work, I still have all my data to, YES. The drive is ALIVE! lol. I was just wondering if there was something extra I had to do since it just seemed weird that the hard drive would work differently if I used it without the sata to usb adapter. Kinda makes me think the adapter could be used with different hard drive brands.
I have this exact same drive I haven't even had it for half a year. When I plug it in it's now saying "unrecognized usb device" I'm thinking of opening the thing up and seeing if my computer will recognize it as an internal hard drive.
LOL at the epic music - it should have climaxed when you opened it finally. I got (or rather someone got for me) one of them Seagate Free Agent GO drives. I have to take it back because everyone I know who had one (yes, HAD) has lost their data due to catastrophic failure (possibly design flaw). Makes me cringe :(. I miss Maxtor.
This video is amazing I laughed when you opened the case seems like a real struggle I plan on doing this do my piece of shit laptop that has only 50 gigs
Is the drive itself IDE or SATA? I need to know what enclosure to replace it with - I'm having a problem where it is deciding to draw "too much power" from the USB (even though it is independently powered via AC ???), power-crashing my cheap netbook. My Mac detects that it's trying to draw too much power and shuts the USB subsystem down 'til I unplug it.
@catfdljws actually i don't need to do this now - it was just the cable shorting out the power from the computer's USB. swapped cables and it works just fine again. But i'll keep this bookmarked if things change...
Hey, I have the same case only it's a 2TB and i saw on the metal casing it looks like there are other connectors or something can you use something besides the normal A to B USB connector for hooking it up if you moded the case to allow it?
I had a slightly different model, 500 GB. It was a little larger, and probably a little older. It was hard as shit to pry that thing open, and when I finally sloppily did so, I plugged it into my motherboard, just to find out that the entire thing was dead, and it wasn't just a power failure on the case. One thing's for sure, I'm never getting SeaGate again... especially since they make screws that no driver/torx can unscrew unless you have SeaGate's own personalized sets.
thanks for the video. really useful. can you tell me the type of the hard drive inside the enclosure. is it a 7200 rpm 3.5 inch hard drice. i have a 500 gb version. and i was planning on getting a bigger segate internal hard drive and installing it inside. do u think thats possible?
seagate freeagent go 3/4 tb started blinking with my laptop. but guess what. it works just fine on my 300 dollar acer netbook. if you're having this problem try it on another computer.
I have just bought this external harddisk today from market. But My system cannot read the information on the my 500 GB Seagate Freeagent go external hard drive using the supplied USB cable. l. Is a required driver missing out on my system? I think that my Windows have some missing driver for this products. Do I need to get a Y USB cable which have two USB cable (one additional USB cable for power consumption for this drive)? Does this drive run successful after plugging this with Y USB cable?
The FireWire 800 unit is different. If you have the FW800 unit, remove the thin cover on the top and you will see two screws. Remove those two screws and the top cover (the one with the logo) is ready to be removed. There are FOUR major clips that extends all the way to the other end.
hey man, thanks for posting this vid, I googled how to do this and your vid came up! Just needed the first minute to give me a hint on how to start, I pulled out my drive (I actually have a FreeAgent Xtreme 1TB before they got discontinued) and put it into a 4bay JBOD enclosure, :D
hey i bought mine yesterday and it felt down today, haha , and its making a noise, mine is a 1.5 Tb you think thats is a ide? to backup half of my things that i saved there? i need my stuff cause everything is there, so what can you tell me, should i open it and put it as a slave to recover everything"?
Great video, just a quick question.. upon reassembling exact casing came across one tiny silver washer, while trying to figure where it came from another appeared, before I saw where that one went.. can you tell me exactly where they come from on the silver housing(s)? Pics would be great if u think u need to illustrate! Cheers in advance!
i have a 1 tb seagate free agent is there any way i can reset it other then formating it cause it wont let me do tht and i cant get it to come up on the my compute screen part
Excellent video! Thanks for posting... had the same problem you did on finding a tutorial for this particular drive.... was trying to figure out how to remove the drive so I could put in my desktop temporarily.... your tutorial did the trick!
I see myself doing this in the future, because my FreeAgent makes clicking sounds. When it dies, I'll want to put in a new disk, because I'm cheap and I don't want to buy a new enclosure too. The thing IS still under warranty, so maybe I should send it back. What a pain!
Very handy little film, I had a Free Agent which always suffered from a duff connection at the jack plug. One day it stopped working altogether and I ordered a Pluscom enclosure online from safekom for £7.99 plus about £5 postage, it took about five minutes to install the hard drive - they even supplied a little screwdriver! Worked perfectly.
@maniac749 The Seagate Drive in this video and in others are all S-ATA drives, you can tell by 3 things: 1. The fact that it would not have an eSATA port if the drive itself was not S-ATA based
2. at 2:11 in the video there is a stamp on the middle right part of the screen which has the S-ATA logo to the right of the Fragile symbol.
3. I am assuming that IDE drives do not support the bandwidth or transfer rate that a S-ATA drive can support over Firewire and esata cords
Bought two of these hard drives to back each other up and lost both during a recent move. I'm a motion graphics guy and I lost a lot of grad school work, fun stuff, my life. One of the HD's mini USB has fallen into the casing and the other just isn't turning on (power source issue I guess) I have a Mac, can I just remove the actual HD and place it into my G5 desktop?? Any help would be appreciated before I tear into these damn things on my own. Thanks!!
Thnx felumilu for your useful comment. I've already opened it. I also have to say that I used simple paper cutter and it opened it easily without damaging the plastic cover at all (no folds or scratches). That means that if you use the HD as you like and you reassemble the parts of the external HD, the previous opening won't be recognizable and the warranty will be valid ;)You also must be careful with the unclasping of the front side, which has 4 clips that can be accidentally broken
I am planning to buy a new and exactly the same HD with the same part number and MLC / DCM and replace the burned circuit. The problem is that the specific model (barracuda 500Gb) is being used by seagate only in external hard drives and I'll have to buy another freeagent. At least, I hope that it will work. I'll make this attempt next weekend and I'll inform about the results :)
I opened the plastic casing too hoping that direct connection of the drive to my pc would work, but it didn't. I connected it to 2 different pcs. The result, each time I connected my HD, was that my pc wasn't starting up. When I was pressing the start button of the pc, the led of the tower lighted up for just some miliseconds and nothing else was happening. Probably the cisrcuit of the casing works fine and surely the circuit of the HD has been burned due to oveload.
@thisameniss Your power supply might not have been strong enough. That's the symptom that usually matches that result. Did you try stripping power to all other devices?
i just opened the casing n i found my hdd to be a barracuda 7200.11 vich is a faulty drive declared by seagate (mine is 1TB)..i av sent a mail to the seagate regarding this..am awaiting their reply...lesse what happens...i would suggest you to send an email to seagate if urs is barracuda 7200.11 coz seagate has announced free data recovery fr barracuda 7200.11 hard disks..coz these r turning out to b faulty majorly..hope both of us get our data back..and others whu r facing the same prblm
u can try putting yer drive in the freezer and then connecting it to yer machine again...my seagate hdd crashed..tho am yet to open it up...bt someone suggested me this trick of putting it in the freezer..he sys sumtimes the metal parts r loose n on puttin them in the freezer the metal parts cntract and it gets wrking again..bt slwly it will fail again..then u need to cool it again....u cn try this..tho i am yet to try this myself...all the best..keep me posted bout yer results if u try..thnk u
Well, no I cannot :( I just spoke with one assistant. His last words were:" We do not have parts for replacement, as we replace the whole unit as I mentioned above"
u dun need to....if u av disassembled the thng u can connect it to the SATA connectors available in the market....n u can use it evn with yer laptop...just as we use internal hdds with our laptops...:-)
Thanks alot, this helped louds. I was trying to figure out the best way to open it up without messing anything up. Mine came open a little easier than yours for some reason xD
p.s. I like the music, is it from Dawn of War?

oh and I have a question. Did you have to set any jumpers or do anything besides open the case to get your computer to recognize the hard drive?
hockeyhatesgooglnow 1 year ago
@hockeyhatesgooglnow jumpers are obsolete. All modern hard drives default to cable select, if they even have jumpers at all.
almightytrent 1 year ago
@almightytrent I got it to work, I still have all my data to, YES. The drive is ALIVE! lol. I was just wondering if there was something extra I had to do since it just seemed weird that the hard drive would work differently if I used it without the sata to usb adapter. Kinda makes me think the adapter could be used with different hard drive brands.
hockeyhatesgooglnow 1 year ago
@almightytrent Not entirely true anymore. Jumpers are "coming" back. The 3 TB Drivers need jumpers if using as a boot for a 32-bit OS.
nstarz 1 year ago
@almightytrent they have jumpers, these are(on sata) to select whether you want to use sata 2, and IDE drives still have them some times
copiga 1 year ago
@hockeyhatesgooglnow sata drives dont use jumpers, so no

I have this exact same drive I haven't even had it for half a year. When I plug it in it's now saying "unrecognized usb device" I'm thinking of opening the thing up and seeing if my computer will recognize it as an internal hard drive.
hockeyhatesgooglnow 1 year ago
hey show how to install the hard drive in the computer please. I mean to make it from a external to an internal.
noahzzart 1 year ago 4
@noahzzart to install the hard drive, plug it in.
almightytrent 1 year ago
@noahzzart All you need to do is open your Computer case and put 4 screws on your HDD to mount it and then plug it in based on the type of HDD it is

This video is amazing I laughed when you opened the case seems like a real struggle I plan on doing this do my piece of shit laptop that has only 50 gigs
e1234njoi 1 year ago
Is the drive itself IDE or SATA? I need to know what enclosure to replace it with - I'm having a problem where it is deciding to draw "too much power" from the USB (even though it is independently powered via AC ???), power-crashing my cheap netbook. My Mac detects that it's trying to draw too much power and shuts the USB subsystem down 'til I unplug it.
catfdljws 1 year ago
@catfdljws actually i don't need to do this now - it was just the cable shorting out the power from the computer's USB. swapped cables and it works just fine again. But i'll keep this bookmarked if things change...

Thanks for taking the time to post this! Much appreciated!

Hey, I have the same case only it's a 2TB and i saw on the metal casing it looks like there are other connectors or something can you use something besides the normal A to B USB connector for hooking it up if you moded the case to allow it?
BrokenVengeance91 1 year ago
I had a slightly different model, 500 GB. It was a little larger, and probably a little older. It was hard as shit to pry that thing open, and when I finally sloppily did so, I plugged it into my motherboard, just to find out that the entire thing was dead, and it wasn't just a power failure on the case. One thing's for sure, I'm never getting SeaGate again... especially since they make screws that no driver/torx can unscrew unless you have SeaGate's own personalized sets.

seagate freeagent go 3/4 tb started blinking with my laptop. but guess what. it works just fine on my 300 dollar acer netbook. if you're having this problem try it on another computer.

I have this exact drive and it's giving me trouble because it likes to disconnect itself and reconnect every so often.
1. Does/did anyone else have this problem.
2. If you answered yes to 1 then will using this as an internal drive fix this problem.

@dodyantony YES!!! don't endanger a HDD if you have data on it you want that isn't backed up.
p3rs0n42 1 year ago
I see myself doing this in the future, because my FreeAgent makes clicking sounds. When it dies, I'll want to put in a new disk, because I'm cheap and I don't want to buy a new enclosure too. The thing IS still under warranty, so maybe I should send it back. What a pain!
thelostsoul83 1 year ago
Hey almightytrent, thank you very much for this incredibly useful guide!
My Freeagent was making the dreaded clicking noise, and fearing that I would lose my data, I have decided to rather use it internally.
Thanks again! Instructions were perfect.

What is the model number of the 3.5" drive inside?
rfvtgbzhn 1 year ago
@rfvtgbzhn Good question. Is it IDE or SATA?
maniac749 1 year ago
@maniac749 The Seagate Drive in this video and in others are all S-ATA drives, you can tell by 3 things: 1. The fact that it would not have an eSATA port if the drive itself was not S-ATA based
2. at 2:11 in the video there is a stamp on the middle right part of the screen which has the S-ATA logo to the right of the Fragile symbol.
3. I am assuming that IDE drives do not support the bandwidth or transfer rate that a S-ATA drive can support over Firewire and esata cords
Yes
The drive is SATA

Bought two of these hard drives to back each other up and lost both during a recent move. I'm a motion graphics guy and I lost a lot of grad school work, fun stuff, my life. One of the HD's mini USB has fallen into the casing and the other just isn't turning on (power source issue I guess) I have a Mac, can I just remove the actual HD and place it into my G5 desktop?? Any help would be appreciated before I tear into these damn things on my own. Thanks!!

gutterguppie 1 year ago
Thnx felumilu for your useful comment. I've already opened it. I also have to say that I used simple paper cutter and it opened it easily without damaging the plastic cover at all (no folds or scratches). That means that if you use the HD as you like and you reassemble the parts of the external HD, the previous opening won't be recognizable and the warranty will be valid ;)You also must be careful with the unclasping of the front side, which has 4 clips that can be accidentally broken
thisameniss 2 years ago
I am planning to buy a new and exactly the same HD with the same part number and MLC / DCM and replace the burned circuit. The problem is that the specific model (barracuda 500Gb) is being used by seagate only in external hard drives and I'll have to buy another freeagent. At least, I hope that it will work. I'll make this attempt next weekend and I'll inform about the results :)
thisameniss 2 years ago
I opened the plastic casing too hoping that direct connection of the drive to my pc would work, but it didn't. I connected it to 2 different pcs. The result, each time I connected my HD, was that my pc wasn't starting up. When I was pressing the start button of the pc, the led of the tower lighted up for just some miliseconds and nothing else was happening. Probably the cisrcuit of the casing works fine and surely the circuit of the HD has been burned due to oveload.
thisameniss 2 years ago
@thisameniss Your power supply might not have been strong enough. That's the symptom that usually matches that result. Did you try stripping power to all other devices?
