aww his is soo cute i luv him i also have a parrot and it is an african grey one 2 i will try 2 get a vid of him and upload it to youtube he is called bobby he is soo cute but he also bites xx
oh my goodness someone sent this to me for my birthday today and i have been laughing and laughing at it as i watch it over and over again!!! It's like when he leans into it and wiggles his wings he's saying, "I really reallllllly mean it!!!"
The "chains and shackles" are a saftey measure, the fact this bird is happy and confident enough in public to sing and talk shows that he has been well looked after and its great for him to be in public if hes not afraid because parrots are flock animals and absolutely love the commotion and the noise. If they do not have a fear of strangers, this is an excellent thing to do for them. This is not my account this is my boyfriends, I am a vetinary student and a proud owner of an african grey.
I have already felt very tired to explain to those people who has no experience in keeping parrots at a metro city. Anyway, my birds are very happy and are enjoyed having sunbath at local park in sunny days. To avoid accident, a chain is needed at outdoor; otherwise it will fly away and never return ...
@sonic1997 NO. If your grey gets scared and hits the end of that chain he will break his legs, I've unfortunately witnessed this. Do him and yourself a favor and get a bird harness, it has a bungee cord for this very reason. My grey wears one, and it doesn't take long for them to get used to it. Also, he seems very well cared for but is exhibiting slight but not major stress signals, holding his wings away from his body. My grey will also talk like crazy when he's nervous.
I wish people would stop banging on about the chains and stuff.. jeez youtube people, every pet video has an argument in it about cruelty. It's annoyingly ironic that they are all saying he needs to escape or something when I and other bird owners can see that he is very happy, the wings being out and the jumpiness just mean he is excited! Nice video :P
@marissa376 Like megaLambofan said, "He's chained up because they care about him, they don't want him to go fly away or too far". Everyone please like for responsible bird care!!!!!
I want my parents to get me one and teach it to sing merry christmas or at least say it that way when i wake up christmas morning I have a happy bird to spend the coming years with
Hi! How did you train him to sing that?? So far, my African Grey can only hum that song, but cannot seem to get the words--and I've been trying for well over a year now! :)
Grey like humans, some are quick learner and they would like to speak in early stage; however some prefer to blow whistle or even speak a few words only at the year of two. No hurry, in the past, we sang in front of "bobo" and repeated it a few times a day. In recent 2 years+, we just let Bobo to learn our conversations naturally and sometimes Bobo will give you surprise and selectively speaks funny words. I think daily 2-way interactions are better than one way teaching.
excellent vid...wish my grey could sing like that...lol...people don't understand how we love our birds, more so than dogs and cats (i have both) and i love them too...people, buy a bird and enjoy a wonderous relationship with it...dusty
I wonder what motivates this parrot to sing to the visitor like this. Could it be pride as in "he look Humans, I can sing in YOUR language!" or is it just random regurgitation of sounds it heard? The truth is out there.
i would say a harness would be better however if youve trained him well with the "chain" on his leg then i don't see a problem with it as long as the grey isnt bothered by it which it certainly doesnt look like it. a happy bird indeed.
p.s why does it look like they strain themselves when they attempt human talk. lol my grey does it to hes so funny :)
Horrible slogin, I agree, BUT there has been a proposed law that anyone caught posting videos on youtube with someone singing songs that are copyrighted, they can be sent to jail for up to 5 years! Please sign... freebeiber. org
omg people! Bird owners put chains and harnesses on their birds to protect them from flying away and getting attacked by another animal, stepped on, or just plain escaping! They do it for THE SAME REASON WE PUT DOGS ON LEASHES!!!!!
We've a grey and a Quaker -- both very happy birds. They have a constant supply of food, luxurious cages, lobg life-expectancy and humans that love them (and they love them back). In the wild, they may starve to death or be killed by a monkey -- and nearly guarantee they'd not reach ten years of age. Wild or domestic -- neither know what they're missing. Leave both alone.
im a fellow grey owner myself and understand what your saying
yes it does come across sad that no animal should be tied or chained up but pets are domesticted and dont defend themselves in the wild so you could also see it as people are protecting there pets and animals domestic pets would not survive in the wild by there self
why dont you go have a go at the peole thats taking animals homes away in the wild
by chopping down there habitats there homes there freedom
This is sweet...even the Asian accent. What a healthy little Grey. Wish people would focus on the positive & see how this bird is well cared for instead of bashing every detail.
Also, I hate how pet videos always turn into a fest of animal rights activists yelling abuse at every turn. It's the reason why I refuse to post videos of any of my pets, as much as I'd like to. No doubt I'd have a million "pet experts" telling me how i should treat my pets. You've no right to tell someone how to treat an animal until you've owned/worked with that particular sort of animal yourself. That's just how i see it.
@Omboth i agree these animals are being treated well.........activists can go too far....I mean the parrot is having fun performing....it's not like you put a helmet on him and made them dig coal 300 feet under the ground
Yeah it's depressing to see a bird in 'chains and shackles', but if he wasn't in them he could fly away and probably wouldn't survive a day in the wild. I find THAT more depressing IMO. This bird is lucky to have such a great owner, clearly he's taken care of extremely well. I took an African Gray from people who were only feeding him steak and never payed attention to him. Now he's growing the feathers he plucked back and is a smart and happy little guy!
Been kept in a cage it's entire life and was not used to people. This bird is obviously given plenty of attention and taken care of. Itd be nice if people who didn't really know about birds would speak to an actual bird owner before leaving nasty comments
In my 9 years of experience as a bird owner I've discovered that they love to be around lots of people and show off what they've got. My eclectus only talks or sings when she's happy, content, or excited, and she raises her wings like that when shes ready to play. I do keep her clipped, because it's cruel not to. When birds try to fly inside a building they can get disoriented and fly into a ceiling fan, mirror, or hot stove. The only reason a bird would be scared in this situation is if it had
Only people sing when frightened LOL. Sonic does his best @ the park protecting BoBo from taking off. I will buy a special harness for the same reason. When I got married 18y ago, I didn't think of it as a commitment, but when I brought my gray home 2y ago, I prayed I will live 50 more years to provide him the nuts, the fruits, the vegetable, and the love he needs and deserves. Don’t be dramatic people! Most of us take good care of them. Focus on how to stop the hunting in Congo first.
@Khanosphera That is very true. I got arrested for speeding last year and they locked me up in a cell and I started singing everything from Musical theatre through to the beatle the Eagles etc etc. They soon let me out. LOL
Jeezus this bird is clearly a much loved and well cared for pet! It's entire world, all it ever knows, is people! People are its flock and family! If it was ever taken away from its flock it would be as upset as a child being snatched from its mother! Leave your peta nazi rantings elsewhere!
@TheGwynnSmith Okay, let's all just put on our blinders, and a big fat happy face, and pretend the world is a cozy place, where all living beings live in harmony! Great idea... I am not a PETA supporter, just call it like I see it. If more people opened their eyes and spoke the truth, maybe things would slowly change for the better... I never suggested to euthanize the birds already living in captivity, but to stop breeding, buying and selling! Pretty simple little concept...
@TheGwynnSmith LOL! :) Of course I don't have all the answers, I am not God! Never claimed to have even half the answers. But I would suggest, that people only adopt rescued animals, and completely stay away from pet stores and breeders. Your bird is one of the few fortunate parrots, who actually gets to experience wind beneath her wings. Majority of bird owners choose to clip their birds. You can only do your best in providing a caring home, and make the environment as natural as possible...
In response to people making comments about birds needing 2 be free,& tossing out critical opinions,YES they should be free, but most are born in captivity. & cannot be released into their native habitat, the best anyone can do is respect their pet birds as intelligent creatures give them what they need 2 be stable & happy. Yes there are a lot of people who should not have birds, or any animal for that matter. AG's can be neurotic self mutilators when not kept properly, this bird looks great!
Whats up with all the haters? This bird looks perfectly happy. I do disagree with the chain on the feet though. It would be easy to break a leg that way. I use the aviator harness when I take my gray outside. It's a leash with a nice shock cord on the end. I encourage him to fly around on our walks.
Taking up rayofgreys' innate sense of reading a situation based on 40 seconds of viewing (although I cheated and have had more than that time to read all of his comments), I'm going to say that he had at least one African Grey, he doesn't know how to train it, and is jealous of not only BoBo, but is also a bit obsessed with watching him (judging from all the comments for multiple weeks). I think the parrot definitely has more of a life than him.
aww nice parrot :) is that chain so he won't fly away? just wondering, and how is your bird not fascinated wit the camera!!!! i cant video tape my budgies because they wanna chew up the camera lens.....
No chain at home. When it is taken out to a park, sometimes we put a chain for a very short period (~20 minutes) during sunbathing and water spraying. Kids are around, some are running and some are riding bicycles etc ... just in case ... My Grey also attached a digital camera, take time to get used to it. Check one of my uploaded video.
Humans are selfish creatures, and we will continue to make excuses, to justify the reasons we keep exotic animals as pets, often in unreasonable conditions. Sometimes, you have to ask yourself what is best for the animal...
This is really sad and pathetic! Poor bird... We rescued an African Grey two years ago, and after living with him for some time now, I truly believe that birds should not be captive, but enjoy their freedom in the forests, where they can interact, socialize, forage and fly! Just be birds... The parrot in the video is clearly very uncomfortable, which is evident in his stressed body language. Looks like a tourist attraction... People suck!
@sonic1997 I never claimed to be an expert. But anyone with bird experience, can read the parrot's body language... Just common sense. Sorry for offending you. I just think that birds should be allowed to live free, and be what they were born to be, which is BIRDS! :) Their wings were designed to fly! I assume you wouldn't mind living in a small enclosure, with your legs cut off?
I don't think you can ready parrot body language. I never heard or seen someone can force a Grey to talk when they are in fear. You said you rescued a Grey, that's great! When did the Grey talk? Please acquire more knowledge or read more books about parrots before making negative comments. All pets's ancestors originated in the wild. If you have such high standard to pets, please express your thinking to all pets owners around you first.
@sonic1997 If he wants to fly away and you have to keep a chain around him or clip his wings, that should tell you he doesn't want to hang out. That goes for ALL birds. Africans are super intelligent and in my opinion they're non-human persons.
@raysofgreys actually, a good sized bird enclosure is the proper ratio of a person in their bedroom. Plus they shouldn't be spending too much time in the cage anyways.
@raysofgreys This may be true, however once a bird has been captive you cannot release it into the wild. It would not know how to survive. It would die. THAT would be cruel.
Plus I too have an African Grey. He WILL NOT talk if he is not happy. He will make very loud whistles to get your attention over and over. Birds of any species that are truly unhappy will sit and pull out all of their feathers and refuse to eat until they die. This bird has all of his. I would say he is doing fine.
@steffadee Of course you cannot release a captive bird into the wild! Clearly he wouldn't make it very long... What I'm saying, is that it's sad to see birds in captivity, and not able to do what they were designed to do - Fly, forage, interact, socialize and be free! This bird may be content, but so is a person in a wheelchair. However, sitting in a wheelchair, will never compare to walking & running! This bird should perhaps have a large tree to sit on, with a selection of toys. And NO chain!
@raysofgreys How do you know he doesn't have those things? You are seeing less than a minute of this bird's life and making judgments on that time. I understand your concern but the fact is you have no idea what the conditions really are like for this bird. If I was taking mine outside I would chain it too. Ours got lost outside for 2 days when he got spooked and flew up into a tree. Thankfully after 2 days he decided to whistle and let us know where he was. Don't be so quick to judge.
@raysofgreys ur a stupid idiot. Captive parrots actually have BETTER lives than wild ones. They have PROTECTION from danger, 24/7 supply of food, and a constant playmate.
Believe it or not, parrots actually love their owners.
@HopeDiamondSS16 How mature of you! First of all, not all captive birds have constant mates!!! In fact, most of them don't. How would you like to live in a cage? Birds were designed to fly, just like we were designed to walk. Are you telling me, that you wouldn't mind sitting in a wheelchair all day long, playing with some toys? And if you were lucky enough, with a "best friend" picked out for you... Birds should be free, the way nature intended it!
@raysofgreys My bird has a cage she sleeps in. She goes into her cage to roost on her perch (the same one she always perches upon, she has many) I close the door and she tells me "K night night! K, K night night!!" and I tell her goodnight, I go to bed I wake up and the first thing I do is open her cage door and bring her out and she plays all day until she wants to go back inside her cage to play with her toys, eat, sleep, and potty. None of these things did I teach her.She does them on her own
@raysofgreys I understand wild birds and animals should stay in the wild! I think people need background check before they can own an animal so they have the best of homes. I think captive animals should have everything they need to support their born instincts. Birds sometimes need cages to keep them safe while people are away. I am an animal activist myself, and I disagree with animals being bred for profit, but ones that are already here must be taken care of to the best of our ability.
@raysofgreys The parrot in the video is OUTSIDE. If he IS stressed about anything, which I am not saying he is, it would be by his present location - out doors, his "natural" habitat. He is used to life indoors, where he would be most comfortable.
@teratophiliacs I understand that he is uncomfortable, because he's in an unfamiliar environment. But the reason is, that he cannot fly away, if he feels threatened. Flighted birds are usually more laid back (stress less, pluck less, etc), because they can always "escape" a potentially unpleasant experience... A clipped bird that is backed into a corner, only has his beak as a defense mechanism. In the wild, a bird would ALWAYS fly away, versus choosing to fight another bird/predator.
@teratophiliacs There are a million excuses, of why it's okay to keep birds captive! However, all of them are made up by humans, simply to justify our selfish reasoning, and make ourselves feel better, about what we deep inside, know is truly wrong! Most people in this country would throw a fit, if they lost their freedom. How are animals any different? Yes, they love their owners, but do they have a choice? That's the only life they know... Freedom + flying or perch in living room? Tough one!
@raysofgreys and there are millions of excuses of why humans do, indeed keep many animals against their will just to make themselves feel better, and there are millions of excuses why you can keep taking your own guilt and laying it on everyone else as if everyone feels the same as you do. Many birds are endangered - not because of us as pet owners, but due to deforestation so why don't you go bark up that tree instead? Pet owners why breed in captivity are keeping many of these species alive.
@teratophiliacs That is completely untrue! So you're saying that we should keep gorillas as pets, because they're about to become extinct?! Absolute non-sense! This has nothing to do with guilt, but with the reality of the matter. If you do your research, you'll learn that if we stopped breeding parrots today, we would still have an overpopulation 60+ years from now!!! That is the sad and brutal truth, that most people are too selfish to acknowledge...
@raysofgreys I see what you are trying to say. But what do you suggest be done with the already captive birds?! To Lucy the African Grey, my husband and our other animals are her flock! She wouldn't be able to survive the wilds of Africa! If I knew she wouldn't miss home and she could survive Africa then I would take her there myself. She wasn't caught from the wild so she does not know she is missing out on it.I know she still acts on instinct to many things, but I do my very best to feed that.
@raysofgreys I have an African Grey and she wouldn't know the first thing about living in the wild! What would you suggest that she be put down? Sometimes captive bred birds are great for showing people just how wonderful and smart they really are and it helps to get people willing to donate to wildlife funds to help support their wild relatives! I agree that animals shouldn't be bred and bred simply because their breeds and I agree that not just everyone should be able to own a bird.
@TheGwynnSmith There is only one reason animals are bred in this world - profit! The best solution to this greedy madness, is to stop purchasing birds from pet stores and breeders. As long as we keep buying, the mills will continue breeding. I have seen HORRIFYING bird mills, with inhumanely disgusting and unacceptable living conditions. These birds are sent to pet stores, thrown in display cages, while we naively pick out our new best friend, completely against nature. Please adopt a rescue! :)
@raysofgreys You do realize that many rescues come originally from breeders? If we stopped breeding birds (and there are many responsible breeders, the store i go to lists their breeder credentials and you're free to check with them), more would be captured from the wild. Which is the greater of the two evils? People will never stop owning birds, and I'd rather see them bred to be pets and used to humans than taken from the wild.
Never suggested releasing your bird into the wild, that's just ludicrous! Please don't spin my words... Have you ever experienced cabin-fever, when not being able to leave your house? Have you ever gone stir-crazy, simply because you spent a few days in the same building? Imagine 50+ years of this feeling, when your instinct and DNA, clearly yearns to experience FREEDOM?! Just think about it. We are smarter than this, and need to understand that some animals shouldn't be confined...
@raysofgreys I didn't say anything about releasing my bird into the wild. I said she wouldn't know how to live in it, so don't twist my words. My bird is free to go to anywhere in my home and her wings are not clipped so when outdoors she is in her cage. She has gone in the car. I ask what you suggest be done with captive birds, and you didn't answer. Maybe you don't have all the answers! Maybe it does suck that there are animals in general that are in fact captivity. Whats to be done?
@raysofgreys I think there should be strict laws on who can home an animal. Animals should not be forced into circuses, test labs and such. But there are already so many animals in captivity, right or wrong! My bird was born into captivity and I adopted her. I do my best as seemingly these people are doing by having theirs outside when possible. What else can you do for them? Yeah animals that are wild caught should not be captured, but the ones born into it should be taken care of! Thats all!
@TheGwynnSmith yes--too many animals in shelters and too many new ones going to people who aren't properly prepared. let's be real--no one is going to stop pet ownership, so we need to help the birds who are *currently* suffering, and to educate people. it's important not to alienate those who are making reasonable efforts, and concentrate on those who are abusing pets. we need a more united front--one that respects good pet owners--in order to get a believable message to those who aren't.
@flychomperfly Agreed! We need to step up as voters and spread the word on animal cruelty that is happening legally every day! Puppy mills, circuses, test labs, some zoos, etc. We need not judge people who are doing the best they can with their pets. This animal is clearly loved! It is in captivity its true but nothing can be done to remedy that save putting the animal down or letting it go, which is cruel in itself. So we need to take care of our animals even if they have cousins who are wild.
@raysofgreys The grey in this video may have been nervous of the camera. Or something it saw in the yard, but it obviously is VERY comfortable with the person because otherwise they usually do not talks and sing for people they dont like or are scared of!
@TheGwynnSmith Sounds like your parrot has a wonderful home and a loving family! Unfortunately, I have witnessed too many birds purchased as an impulse buy, or as a present for a child. Like all toys, the bird(s) are often replaced with something more exciting. My neighbor has two birds, and both were a gift for her two boys. Sadly, the birds now sit in a dark basement. They share a tiny cage, no toys or fresh meals. It's filthy, and they are NEVER let out, because of the recent cat addition...
@TheLuluParrot Yeah it is sad, but I am sure its just a precaution for being outdoors. Their are "freeflight" trained birds, but that in itself is dangerous as birds can get caught in updrafts and are unable to fly back to their human companions. Im sure this bird isn't chained up indoors where it is safe. It is a captive bird obviously and the humans have to do what is safe for the bird. Thank goodness wild caught birds are now illegal to own in the states!
If you have to chain BoBo to let it outside then perhaps you should consider an outdoor aviary. Perhaps we should see a video of you chained at your leg to a picnic table.
I have an african grey too but I'm really feeling sorry for him. I didn't buy him, a friend of mine bought and she couldn't take care of him. I think he is a wild-caught. it feels like he is a sold slave in 21th century. now I see this one chained and trying to give fun to people around because he has nothing to do better. I'm sure if he were much intelligent, he would say he wants to go back to his own land and climate. all animals are in danger because of what we built. I hate to be human.
Do you know the difference of wild-caught and domesticated pet birds from breeders? It seems that you have a very high standard to birds and animals. I bet you are vegetarian as you would not accept poultry and livestock. Please read some Parrot books or advance preparation about Parrots before keeping the Grey.
@sonic1997 thanks for your advices but I didn't judge you. I'm not vegetarian but considering about it and yes I have so high standards for all animals especially for those who can't defend themselves. I never had a bird before and it's been just 2 weeks with the grey. but I look after 20 cats in my neighborhood and 3 dogs on my own. I'm getting along with my nervous bird and while no one could get close to him, I had a kiss 10 days ago. I'm consuming sources about him. and please relax a bit...
@irmakkuday If you hate being human because of "what we've done to nature", you can do the world a favor... Go to the north pole and get eaten by a polar bear- You'll save a seal, reduce carbon emissions and rid the world of an idiot. It's a win-win-win situation! :D
We only put a chain when it is outside for having sunbath and water spraying.
Don't apply your own opinion on our place. Open your eyes to other countries in the world. In Hong Kong, if your birds are flying, it'd land on highways or streets. It's not difficult to image how dangerous it is. You are lucky to have a big backyard and gardens for your birds. For us, we have to take them to a park nearby with more than 15 minutes walk. Driving and open areas are luxury in Hong Kong!
They actually do the pinning of the eyes when they are focusing at a particular object. I have had grays for years. This bird doesn't look scared to me. Grays ar smart birds and you cant force them to do anything. They dont speak out of fear. They wont speak usually when you want them to. Mine hold thier wings in all kinds of ways and I have had mine hold their wings like this as well.
That poor bird is terrified. You can see it in his eyes and his stance. He is performing out of fear. You should be ashamed. We never let our birds get that scared. Ask yourself this. Would you let your child do this while restrained?
@kjw7000 How can you tell he is terrified? Are you a parrot expert!? Can you read its mind from its eyes!? I believe I know my parrot better. My parrots enjoy water spraying and sunbathing at park. I let them to speak or sing freely without any enforcement. Don't blindly criticize if you know nothing about the fact. Grey is usually shy in new environment. If he is scared, he won't speak!!
@sonic1997 Our current grey was a rescue that came from people who neglected him and terrorised him when they wanted some fun. I saw the same look in his eyes the day we got him. The rigid, slighty lifted and quivering wings were the other traits he had but now doesnt because he is free to roam our home during the day. We cant let him outside because we have lots of crows nearby. Im sorry if i have offended you but i do believe your bird shows the same terror mine did when we got him.
@kjw7000 No he's not! My mom has 2 and her oldest is19 (my little brother). They don't talk when they're terrified, they do when they're content. The look in his eyes are how Greys look. They "pin" their eyes when scared. This guy was loving the attention!
Have you not consider the avitor harness? Although we have had no luck training are b/g with it! lol! Lovely little bird :)

I wonder what motivates this parrot to sing to the visitor like this. Could it be pride as in "he look Humans, I can sing in YOUR language!" or is it just random regurgitation of sounds it heard? The truth is out there.

Great video!
Leave both alone.
cheshirelizzy 5 months ago
im a fellow grey owner myself and understand what your saying
yes it does come across sad that no animal should be tied or chained up but pets are domesticted and dont defend themselves in the wild so you could also see it as people are protecting there pets and animals domestic pets would not survive in the wild by there self
why dont you go have a go at the peole thats taking animals homes away in the wild
by chopping down there habitats there homes there freedom

Also, I hate how pet videos always turn into a fest of animal rights activists yelling abuse at every turn. It's the reason why I refuse to post videos of any of my pets, as much as I'd like to. No doubt I'd have a million "pet experts" telling me how i should treat my pets. You've no right to tell someone how to treat an animal until you've owned/worked with that particular sort of animal yourself. That's just how i see it.

When I got married 18y ago, I didn't think of it as a commitment, but when I brought my gray home 2y ago, I prayed I will live 50 more years to provide him the nuts, the fruits, the vegetable, and the love he needs and deserves. Pretty simple little concept...
raysofgreys 9 months ago
@raysofgreys yes--i see it too--wings out and is definitely doing 'gotta get away' moves.
i also see that grey is singing--which usually can't happen in a state of fear. maybe the bird is clipped and just wants to fly to his dad or mom?
i also completely agree with you about the plight of unwanted birds and birdie mills!!
but this audience tends to want to make their birds' lives better, which is why they're here. and getting the grey outside is a good thing.
how to stop impulse ownership?
flychomperfly 9 months ago
@TheGwynnSmith LOL! :) Of course I don't have all the answers, I am not God! Never claimed to have even half the answers. But I would suggest, that people only adopt rescued animals, and completely stay away from pet stores and breeders. Your bird is one of the few fortunate parrots, who actually gets to experience wind beneath her wings. Majority of bird owners choose to clip their birds. You can only do your best in providing a caring home, and make the environment as natural as possible...
raysofgreys 9 months ago
At the first moment, it is funny. But a parrot isn't meant to be in chains - it should be free.
19BlAcKsNoW91 10 months ago
In response to people making comments about birds needing 2 be free,& tossing out critical opinions,YES they should be free, but most are born in captivity. & cannot be released into their native habitat, the best anyone can do is respect their pet birds as intelligent creatures give them what they need 2 be stable & happy. Yes there are a lot of people who should not have birds, or any animal for that matter. AG's can be neurotic self mutilators when not kept properly, this bird looks great!
SYMHD200 10 months ago 5

No chain at home. When it is taken out to a park, sometimes we put a chain for a very short period (~20 minutes) during sunbathing and water spraying. Kids are around, some are running and some are riding bicycles etc ... just in case ... My Grey also attached a digital camera, take time to get used to it. Check one of my uploaded video.
sonic1997 11 months ago
Humans are selfish creatures, and we will continue to make excuses, to justify the reasons we keep exotic animals as pets, often in unreasonable conditions. Sometimes, you have to ask yourself what is best for the animal...
raysofgreys 1 year ago
This is really sad and pathetic! Poor bird... We rescued an African Grey two years ago, and after living with him for some time now, I truly believe that birds should not be captive, but enjoy their freedom in the forests, where they can interact, socialize, forage and fly! Just be birds... The parrot in the video is clearly very uncomfortable, which is evident in his stressed body language. Looks like a tourist attraction... People suck!
raysofgreys 1 year ago
@raysofgreys
According to your hypothesis, all people keeping birds are sucks.
Why so many people think they are parrot expert!? That really sucks!
sonic1997 1 year ago
@sonic1997 I never claimed to be an expert. But anyone with bird experience, can read the parrot's body language... Just common sense. Sorry for offending you. I just think that birds should be allowed to live free, and be what they were born to be, which is BIRDS! :) Their wings were designed to fly! I assume you wouldn't mind living in a small enclosure, with your legs cut off?
raysofgreys 1 year ago
@raysofgreys
If you have such high standard to pets, please express your thinking to all pets owners around you first.
sonic1997 1 year ago 7
@sonic1997 If he wants to fly away and you have to keep a chain around him or clip his wings, that should tell you he doesn't want to hang out. That goes for ALL birds. Africans are super intelligent and in my opinion they're non-human persons.
Antiks72 10 months ago
@raysofgreys actually, a good sized bird enclosure is the proper ratio of a person in their bedroom. Plus they shouldn't be spending too much time in the cage anyways.
ShreddGamer14 7 months ago
@raysofgreys This may be true, however once a bird has been captive you cannot release it into the wild. It would not know how to survive. It would die. THAT would be cruel.
Plus I too have an African Grey. He WILL NOT talk if he is not happy. He will make very loud whistles to get your attention over and over. Birds of any species that are truly unhappy will sit and pull out all of their feathers and refuse to eat until they die. This bird has all of his. I would say he is doing fine.
steffadee 11 months ago 3
@steffadee Of course you cannot release a captive bird into the wild! Clearly he wouldn't make it very long... What I'm saying, is that it's sad to see birds in captivity, and not able to do what they were designed to do - Fly, forage, interact, socialize and be free! This bird may be content, but so is a person in a wheelchair. However, sitting in a wheelchair, will never compare to walking & running! This bird should perhaps have a large tree to sit on, with a selection of toys. And NO chain!
raysofgreys 11 months ago
@raysofgreys How do you know he doesn't have those things? You are seeing less than a minute of this bird's life and making judgments on that time. I understand your concern but the fact is you have no idea what the conditions really are like for this bird. If I was taking mine outside I would chain it too. Ours got lost outside for 2 days when he got spooked and flew up into a tree. Thankfully after 2 days he decided to whistle and let us know where he was. Don't be so quick to judge.
steffadee 11 months ago 4
@raysofgreys ur a stupid idiot. Captive parrots actually have BETTER lives than wild ones. They have PROTECTION from danger, 24/7 supply of food, and a constant playmate.
Believe it or not, parrots actually love their owners.
HopeDiamondSS16 9 months ago
@HopeDiamondSS16 How mature of you! First of all, not all captive birds have constant mates!!! In fact, most of them don't. How would you like to live in a cage? Birds were designed to fly, just like we were designed to walk. Are you telling me, that you wouldn't mind sitting in a wheelchair all day long, playing with some toys? And if you were lucky enough, with a "best friend" picked out for you... Birds should be free, the way nature intended it!
raysofgreys 9 months ago
@raysofgreys My bird has a cage she sleeps in. She goes into her cage to roost on her perch (the same one she always perches upon, she has many) I close the door and she tells me "K night night! K, K night night!!" and I tell her goodnight, I go to bed I wake up and the first thing I do is open her cage door and bring her out and she plays all day until she wants to go back inside her cage to play with her toys, eat, sleep, and potty. None of these things did I teach her.She does them on her own
TheGwynnSmith 9 months ago
@raysofgreys I understand wild birds and animals should stay in the wild! I think people need background check before they can own an animal so they have the best of homes. I think captive animals should have everything they need to support their born instincts. Birds sometimes need cages to keep them safe while people are away. I am an animal activist myself, and I disagree with animals being bred for profit, but ones that are already here must be taken care of to the best of our ability.
TheGwynnSmith 9 months ago
@raysofgreys The parrot in the video is OUTSIDE. If he IS stressed about anything, which I am not saying he is, it would be by his present location - out doors, his "natural" habitat. He is used to life indoors, where he would be most comfortable.
teratophiliacs 9 months ago
@teratophiliacs I understand that he is uncomfortable, because he's in an unfamiliar environment. But the reason is, that he cannot fly away, if he feels threatened. Flighted birds are usually more laid back (stress less, pluck less, etc), because they can always "escape" a potentially unpleasant experience... A clipped bird that is backed into a corner, only has his beak as a defense mechanism. In the wild, a bird would ALWAYS fly away, versus choosing to fight another bird/predator.
raysofgreys 9 months ago
@teratophiliacs There are a million excuses, of why it's okay to keep birds captive! However, all of them are made up by humans, simply to justify our selfish reasoning, and make ourselves feel better, about what we deep inside, know is truly wrong! Most people in this country would throw a fit, if they lost their freedom. How are animals any different? Yes, they love their owners, but do they have a choice? That's the only life they know... Freedom + flying or perch in living room? Tough one!
raysofgreys 9 months ago
@raysofgreys and there are millions of excuses of why humans do, indeed keep many animals against their will just to make themselves feel better, and there are millions of excuses why you can keep taking your own guilt and laying it on everyone else as if everyone feels the same as you do. Many birds are endangered - not because of us as pet owners, but due to deforestation so why don't you go bark up that tree instead? Pet owners why breed in captivity are keeping many of these species alive.
teratophiliacs 9 months ago
@teratophiliacs That is completely untrue! So you're saying that we should keep gorillas as pets, because they're about to become extinct?! Absolute non-sense! This has nothing to do with guilt, but with the reality of the matter. If you do your research, you'll learn that if we stopped breeding parrots today, we would still have an overpopulation 60+ years from now!!! That is the sad and brutal truth, that most people are too selfish to acknowledge...
raysofgreys 9 months ago
@raysofgreys I see what you are trying to say. But what do you suggest be done with the already captive birds?! To Lucy the African Grey, my husband and our other animals are her flock! She wouldn't be able to survive the wilds of Africa! If I knew she wouldn't miss home and she could survive Africa then I would take her there myself. She wasn't caught from the wild so she does not know she is missing out on it.I know she still acts on instinct to many things, but I do my very best to feed that.
TheGwynnSmith 9 months ago
@raysofgreys I have an African Grey and she wouldn't know the first thing about living in the wild! What would you suggest that she be put down? Sometimes captive bred birds are great for showing people just how wonderful and smart they really are and it helps to get people willing to donate to wildlife funds to help support their wild relatives! I agree that animals shouldn't be bred and bred simply because their breeds and I agree that not just everyone should be able to own a bird.
TheGwynnSmith 9 months ago
@TheGwynnSmith There is only one reason animals are bred in this world - profit! The best solution to this greedy madness, is to stop purchasing birds from pet stores and breeders. As long as we keep buying, the mills will continue breeding. I have seen HORRIFYING bird mills, with inhumanely disgusting and unacceptable living conditions. These birds are sent to pet stores, thrown in display cages, while we naively pick out our new best friend, completely against nature. Please adopt a rescue! :)
raysofgreys 9 months ago
@raysofgreys You do realize that many rescues come originally from breeders? If we stopped breeding birds (and there are many responsible breeders, the store i go to lists their breeder credentials and you're free to check with them), more would be captured from the wild. Which is the greater of the two evils? People will never stop owning birds, and I'd rather see them bred to be pets and used to humans than taken from the wild.
Omboth 6 months ago
Never suggested releasing your bird into the wild, that's just ludicrous! Please don't spin my words... Have you ever experienced cabin-fever, when not being able to leave your house? Have you ever gone stir-crazy, simply because you spent a few days in the same building? Imagine 50+ years of this feeling, when your instinct and DNA, clearly yearns to experience FREEDOM?! Just think about it. We are smarter than this, and need to understand that some animals shouldn't be confined...
raysofgreys 9 months ago
@raysofgreys I didn't say anything about releasing my bird into the wild. I said she wouldn't know how to live in it, so don't twist my words. My bird is free to go to anywhere in my home and her wings are not clipped so when outdoors she is in her cage. She has gone in the car. I ask what you suggest be done with captive birds, and you didn't answer. Maybe you don't have all the answers! Maybe it does suck that there are animals in general that are in fact captivity. Whats to be done?
TheGwynnSmith 9 months ago
@raysofgreys I think there should be strict laws on who can home an animal. Animals should not be forced into circuses, test labs and such. But there are already so many animals in captivity, right or wrong! My bird was born into captivity and I adopted her. I do my best as seemingly these people are doing by having theirs outside when possible. What else can you do for them? Yeah animals that are wild caught should not be captured, but the ones born into it should be taken care of! Thats all!
TheGwynnSmith 9 months ago
@TheGwynnSmith yes--too many animals in shelters and too many new ones going to people who aren't properly prepared. let's be real--no one is going to stop pet ownership, so we need to help the birds who are *currently* suffering, and to educate people. it's important not to alienate those who are making reasonable efforts, and concentrate on those who are abusing pets. we need a more united front--one that respects good pet owners--in order to get a believable message to those who aren't.
flychomperfly 9 months ago
@flychomperfly Agreed! We need to step up as voters and spread the word on animal cruelty that is happening legally every day! Puppy mills, circuses, test labs, some zoos, etc. We need not judge people who are doing the best they can with their pets. This animal is clearly loved! It is in captivity its true but nothing can be done to remedy that save putting the animal down or letting it go, which is cruel in itself. So we need to take care of our animals even if they have cousins who are wild.
TheGwynnSmith 9 months ago
@raysofgreys The grey in this video may have been nervous of the camera. Or something it saw in the yard, but it obviously is VERY comfortable with the person because otherwise they usually do not talks and sing for people they dont like or are scared of!
TheGwynnSmith 9 months ago
@TheGwynnSmith Sounds like your parrot has a wonderful home and a loving family! Unfortunately, I have witnessed too many birds purchased as an impulse buy, or as a present for a child. Like all toys, the bird(s) are often replaced with something more exciting. My neighbor has two birds, and both were a gift for her two boys. Sadly, the birds now sit in a dark basement. They share a tiny cage, no toys or fresh meals. It's filthy, and they are NEVER let out, because of the recent cat addition...

sonic1997 1 year ago 2
@TheLuluParrot Yeah it is sad, but I am sure its just a precaution for being outdoors. Their are "freeflight" trained birds, but that in itself is dangerous as birds can get caught in updrafts and are unable to fly back to their human companions. Im sure this bird isn't chained up indoors where it is safe. It is a captive bird obviously and the humans have to do what is safe for the bird. Thank goodness wild caught birds are now illegal to own in the states!
