Although there is no way to prove it, it's fascinating to think that ancient extinct animals we only know from fossil records, such as some dinosaurs, probably had this ability to adapt their skin colour...My guess is that only small and slow moving animals could find true benefit of it. It would be interesting to know through DNA's further understanding when this adaptation first appeared in cameleons' ancestors, just like to know how and about when it appeared in the cephalopods.

I believe you got “breeds” and "families" mixed up. A breed is a variation of a species in a subspecies. A family of animals encompasses multiple genera, which in term, encompasses multiple species. Families can also be divided up into sub families.

@myleghurts100 Many of these Chams are different sub species of Panther Chameleon. Although they do have a wide color spectrum, (forexample) the blue chams will not fire up yellows and reds.

Not all of those colors, no. These are different kinds of Panther Chameleons, they're from all over madagascar and have tons of color variations, each named for the town. Like Nosy Be, Ambilobbe and Sambava.

They do change colors but these are different species. They don't change colors so drastically. Each species has a different coloration and they basically change from dark to light. They change based on their moods mostly, or to regulate their temperature.

Chameleons only change to ONE color. It happens when they are stressed. Its not because they camouflage to their surroundings. and its a rare few that actually change color completely, most just develop patterns.
