Yes the UAW add cost, but if the Detroit Big 3 made cars people wanted to buy, they may have had a chance.

No doubt about that, but, UAW destroyed the Big 3, I should have specified that. Yes they make cars people do not want but I know a woman that when her plant shut down for a month to save money she and the rest of the workers were still making $60+ and hour/8 hour days the whole time and they are unskilled workers.

But is seems they are hell bend on being the low cost / lost quality leader and they should have moved their plants to a cheaper labor market a long long time ago...

Its hard to compete with other companies that have less labor costs. They do outsource jobs, they also had to outsource from Michigan because the taxes are very high there. You are right though. Michigan's high taxes, poor product, and high labor costs (Unions) have destroyed them. I agree with this video, let them go bankrupt, liquidate, entrepreneurs can buy up the worthwhile assets, start over, make better, more fuel efficient cars, get out of Michigan and kick UAW to the curb.

I can appreciate your anger and frustration with the UAW, but the root of the problem is a Federal Government that is undermining the core self regulating principle of the free market, which is the fear of failure.

Masfoljo, what you don't realize is that the compensation isn't just in wages, @ the Big 3 there are pension costs, medicare, workers comp, and cash just flowing out of the plants. Average compensation per worker @ GM is $120 000 a year. UAW must die.

Thanks for your reply. I agree that communism - pure socialism - does not work .But as we are discovering, pure capitalism is also fatally flawed.

This is because it demands that we surrender to market forces which are blind and amoral. Morality is what makes us human. If we blindly follow these blind forces wherever they lead us we will end up in a very chaotic and inhumane place.

An economy is like a cart which needs 2 wheels to go, capitalism and socialism.

Ah, you are so wrong. Capitalism, unlike socialism,can deal with failure. In fact, capitalism needs failure. Joseph Schumpeter called this 'creative destruction.' The beauty of free markets is that firms learn from their mistakes or they lose money, shrink and then go out of business. Govts grow from their mistakes and learn to make money from them. Capitalism requires risking your own monies. Socialism tries to figure everything out as they go along, and failing, says only Gov can save us.

Creating a market for unproductive companies (which is what the Govt is doing now.) is what is giving capitalism a bad name when in reality it is the government intervention which has creating this "safety net" which compromises the entire free market system. Bad companies die..new ones are born, its how it works.

well the street in front of you is most likely paid for by state or municipal taxes unless its a federal highway. Socialism the people would produce own operate the road but in our republic we delegate the consumption of necessities to our state government (purchase) because the state government & local is the only one that can compile enough cash for road and other projects. They buy these things with our money that we make in our own private jobs.
