A GT500 was nearly double the cost of a stock Mustang. It would not have been "Another Trashed Mustang". It had a well known celebrity owner, it had been repaired numerous times at every shop in the area. It was a known car.

The story that it was stolen from LAX when Jim was in Chicago is a lot more viable.

There are several people who claim to own it. We have copies of the original registration and detailed specs. It's the journey that makes the film anyway.

An interesting journey, yes. But with a severely bent frame from a serious whack just forward of the passenger fender seam it was a loss. It was a known car - known to be thrashed. It was likely scavenged. In that state it wouldn't have attracted any interest. No big diff from any muscle junk back then. Jimbo had many cars but I never came across info on any being stolen. Of course several people claim to own it with that much $ riding on it. Proof? It was inevitable that it would be "found."

The GT 500 was actually the only car ever registered to Jim. Mostly he drove rentals from Cahuenga Rental Cars. Those he left all over the place. The Mustang was a common sight, coming in Monday morning on the hook of a tow truck to be repaired, again.

Any Shelby at the time wasn't "Junk". They were known to be limited production numbered cars that did sell at twice the price of a base stang.

When I had connections in CA DMV I confirmed that it was the only car registered to him, but he "owned" others. He definitely was different. (Still) disagree on the Shelby status. In the context of its time, it was another wreck. Like a Saleen now. Limited production carried less weight then than it does now. And I don't know that they were meant to be limited, they just didn't sell much! Anyway, anything can be faked these days, and as a consequence I spell fraud B-U-L-L-S-H-*-T. Peace.

Just on the face of the argument makes no sense. If a Porsche belonging to Mick Jagger was dropped off at your wrecking yard, you wouldn't "Throw it on the pile.".

My guess is that it showed one time in 1969 and was more of a curiosity to most viewers and so never got sold or marketed in any way. I found it online a few years ago after looking for quite a while and I like it, personally.

I'd love to see a restored print released on DVD or Blu-Ray. Morrison and the other folks behind this loved european cinema and this was during the height of the road movie era from 1968-1971.
