ooh my goodness stop feeding her dog food! do a little research she needs fruits a vegetables. and they do make a skunk food. whole foods are very important to ensure a long healthy life.
Skunks cannot survive for long on just dog food, they need a much more varied diet, certainly cat food yes, thats a lot better, but they need more than that even.
They also require mental stimulation too... They are inquisitive nosey creatures that need to be entertained.
They are much harder to properly care for than a cat, so this silly cow is definitely NOT caring for it properly at all.
@FatRakoon they shouldn't be fed cat food. it is too high a protein percentage and can cause problems in their kidneys. other than that I agree that skunk needs a much more complex diet including flax seed oil and taurine.
@Mizleyful exotics are hard to own. This woman really isn't the ideal owner for an exotic.
I have no problem with people owning exotics, but getting one because you saw one lady have one, "falling in love with it", and talking about how you don't have "a lot of time for a dog"... I bet this skunk isn't with this kid anymore. I bet it's dead or it was "released into the wild" - i.e. dead.
Work in any animal rescue group. You'll feel differently when you see results of incompetent owners.
@Goatmon "There's nothing wrong with wanting a pet that requires less maintenance than a dog or a cat. "
A skunk is FAR MORE DIFFICULT to own in terms of maintenance than a dog or even a cat.
You like animals? Do rescue for any selected animal you want. I do Samoyed rescue. People who get animals on a whim, I'd like to freaking kill because I know what they do to their victims that they "fall in love with" for a week or two. Some turn into good owners, a very small percentage do..
No, you are right, there is nothing wrong with wanting a pet that requires less maintenance than a dog or a cat.
The snag is, that a skunk isnt one of them. This woman is a bloody idiot, that only wanted a skunk to be different not to love it and care for it because she is not doing that at all going by her own words in the video, she clearly does not care at all for its real welfare, only her own.
@jvlc1234 Normally I would agree with you, but that particular skunk would die in the wild because it's bred in a domestic environment and wouldn't know how to live. I will agree on the fact that a closet is not really a big enough space, though.
Removing their scent glands is illegal in Britain and even when it's legal you shouldn't expect it to have been done.
It triggered quite a bit of dumping at first which is just disgusting but it's kind of good becuase it proves that the law will discourage people to own skunks irresponsibly.
It's a really small possibility with a tame skunk becuase they're quite laid back and have to be pretty frightened in the first place, so owners themselves don't tend to feel the need to.
That one seemed pretty tame. Reminds me of one of my cats. He is all black except for a bright white stripe down his chest. I wonder if cats and skunks get along?
I thought maybe they might but wasn't sure so thank you. Skunks really are cute!
I had the misfortune to run into one out in the stick when I lived in Idaho. I saw it just as it saw me. I had a rifle and I shot it but it was too late. I was nailed. GRR!!! I sat the rifle down on the ground, gaged and ran to where the air was clear. It was horrible.
Ferrets and Skunks are related. Both need scent glans removed and require almost the same care-taking.
I don't have a Skunk myself, but my aunt used to have one called 'Domino'. Apparently Skunks seem to be near-sighted and Domino would follow her everywhere in the house.
I dont have a skunk myself, and who know maybe ill never have since I live in Sweden where they are illegal, but still, I'm reading caresheets about skunks and well the best sounding diet I have found for skunks would actually be the one that Mary Kaye Ashley write about in her book 'A Comprehensive Guide to Raising a Pet Skunk', 50% veggies, 40% of a homemade recipe (skunkie delight) and 10% other whole foods, suppose that refers to fruits and so
even though its against my morals to have a skunk as a pet i must admit they are loving fun creatures. i worked at a wild animal rehab center and they are amazing... the babies are too cute are fun to work with. i love skunks!!!
I have two pet skunks, and changing their litter box is nowhere near as bad as changing a cat box. Skunks don't really have much body odor, either. They don't smell any worse than a cat, really. They have a very faint musky smell when they get agitated, but other than that they're clean, soft, and most of the time pretty snuggly. I think they're wonderful pets, and I'd never want to be without my girls.
I am interested in having a skunk as a pet... I know that they can be litter box trained, but do they smell? I mean, I know that changing the litter box for a cat stinks but is it as bad as that for a skunk? Thanks.
Skunks need MORE care than dogs, and shouldn't eat dog food! Sadly, there's a lot of bad info out there, but reports such as this one only encourage impulse buys of pets that are more complicated than this soundbite explains.
A good resource for pet skunks is Striped Bandits (google it). Also, make sure you have a competent vet in your area who will visit skunks. Also know the laws of skunk ownership in your city/state, and think seriously about getting one.
It is illegal to own skunks in Arkansas because of rabies.

@woodswing2006
Sorry, I didnt make it clear.
An ONLY DOG FOOD diet is dangerous to them.
They need vegetables too.
Cat food is VERY HIGH in proteins and thats also bad for them, but it gives them a lot more nutrients that skunks can use than dog food.
You also need to give them a lot of veg too! - I think their diet is best being a 60% MEAT and 40% VEG diet.
Dog food or cat food do not provide that 60% and so real meat is also needed.
Basically, the buggers wil eat anything.

Excellent info love, thanks for posting this and you were spot on with
the 'Striped Bandits' site. Very helpful. Oh and I agree, common sense
would dictate that you DON'T feed a skunk dog food! Obviously this gurl
was too lazy or cheap or BOTH to get the proper nutrition for her skunk., and
I agree, clips like this do encourage impulse purchases. Thanks for your input.
Cheers! = ]
