  • Are the magnesium strips needed to actually ignite it? I've made Thermite myself with iron oxide and just permanganate + glycerin was enough to ignite it.

It might have been an idea for the titanium dioxide thermite since that wouldn't really burn with this reaction alone.

  • @Chirimorin1 Yeah most of the time both isn't really needed, you can use either Mg or permanganate + glycerin by themselves in most cases. I just use this method because in my experience it's guaranteed to work every time, and I've had trouble with Mg ribbon alone.

  • @mrhomescientist Ah, thanks for the info. I've had trouble with magnesium strips also, which is why I changed to the permanganate + glycerin.

  • @Chirimorin1 I believe titanium dioxide thermite can include calcium sulfate to help sustain the reaction heat long enough for the titanium to separate from the oxygen.

  • @Spart248 I should try that sometime, thanks for the tip :)

  • @Chirimorin1 No, you can use sparklers

  • where do i buy Glycerin from i had a little look on ebay and there is just some stuff for food or some crap like that will that give the same reaction to the potassium permanganate???

  • @95centurian Yes, glycerin should pretty much always be the same whatever the source. Mine was from Wal Mart, sold as a skin moisturizer.

  • And now to put this on my principals car! ^_^

  • so THATS what makes our computers run... interesting...

  • hey send me that piece of your dragon shell

  • is this the first step to getting silicon boobs ?

  • silicon is a metalloid not a metal.

  • Is it bad that I like to snort the powder up my nose and then smoke a cigar immediately afterwords?

  • this is really awesome!! I'll try to replicate this as a 4th of july trick.

  • Holy-Terrorist:>*=* Impressive video!

  • Gee it got so dark

  • I want to see this done with black beauty sand!

  • Cool. Like making meth or something.

  • Please comment on my comment: What's the purpose of doing this? Can you sell the ending result or what?

  • lol that was awesome and very informative but are you sure it was a good idea to do it on dry grass? lol jk nice vid tho

  • yeah put your foot near that lol

  • I did this, that, this and this, fucked about with this for an hour, went for a crap, came back and pissed about somemore and ended up with a pile of dust.........result.......

  • Do chemistry

    .

    make jewelry....

    .

    PROFIT

  • sub

  • i subbed thnx 4 educating me

  • If you mix table salt with cat litter (not the kind with the blue crystals, you need just gypsum granules!) it makes Ermadite. Only do it if legal in your area and be careful, it's super explosive.

  • touch it

  • Very impressive, thank you.

  • can some1 explain this? why does the background go black when it burns so brightly??

  • @hotterThanU101 Automatic gain control. Otherwise the brightness of the flame would white-out the image.

  • ooooh lovely spoon you got there!

  • didn't burn through the bottom of the pot.. wow.,.. real "great" thermite..

So why is it that mine melts through 3 inches of steel plate and your wont make it through a clay pot?

I just use Iron oxide with aluminium sulfate and a magnesium strip to get it started..

  • Crazy Scientist

  • Fail

  • Holy-Terrorist:>*=* Mix aluminium[Al], sulfur[S] and silicon dioxide[SiO2] to make aluminium sulfate[Al2(SO4)3] taked oxygen of silicon dioxide[SiO2] to form silicon[Si] in thermite reaction?

*=* Silicon[Si] not reactive in hydrochloric acid[HCl], yes is dangerous of hydrogen sulphide[H2S]!

I speak french and little english.

*=* Im retarded to sleeping, just 1 other video, bye A+

  • Does it matter how coarse the sand is?

  • make some semiconductors :)

  • I know lets set this thermite off on all this dry grass.

  • Where do u buy ur chemicals

  • @cooldog60

There are many kinds of bleach, but household bleach is a solution of Sodium Hypochlorite - NaClO - and water. Hydrochloric acid is HCl, and isn't used as a bleach as far as I know, as it doesn't oxidize anything (the main means of bleaching by bleaches).

NaClO is a very weak acid, while HCl is a very strong acid. The two are totally different.

  • Were is the vid of the stupid kid that made this and destroyed he's fathers car after?

  • It would've been cooler to do the thermite reaction on some asshole neighbor's car.

  • what if u grinded the big lump? do you think it was pure enough to give the surface a nice metallic shine? i know it would eliminate its crystalline appearance, but it would be nice to have one massive silicone key tag.

  • 8 people do not have Sand

  • I made mine the gehto way with rust from my brake rotors and alluminum dust from the shop scrap bin. It burned fairly well. I bought a magnesium fire striker and powdered it for an ignition source. Thats some straight up anarchists cookbook shit!

  • dat some nice shit there

  • where the fuck you get acid from o.O

  • @bacon635 Isn't hydrochloric acid bleach?

  • @bacon635 home depot

  • it looked like glass before you put it into the acid. is that from the sand?

  • @oneGINGANINJA Some of it might have been, I imagine things got hot enough. Most of the shiny material was silicon though. It got dull afterward from exposure to the acid pitting the surface.

  • 3.35 Now pick that up and drop it down the front of your pants! I DARE you!

  • Why is it that every How-to videos that involve mixing dangerous combustive chemicals I see, the chemical reaction is taking place in an extremely Combustible area? I feel like 90% of the major forest fires were causes by this specific incident >.<

  • you have to get a girlfriend!

  • 3:52 Oyster !!

  • it went from day, to night,to day

  • @zaprs that's because the light meter of the camera auto-adjusted to compensate for such bright light :)

  • so this thermite won't burn through steel like iron oxide thermite, right?

  • Wait, so what happened to the light around the mixture when the fire made contact with the Sulfur? everything went blackish/purple

  • @TheCinnamonstix that was the camera. because the flame is so bright, it reduced all incoming light so u can actually see the flame, that meant turning daylight, and take so much light away from it and make it seem dark. After that, we could still see the flame which shows how strong it was.

  • Did he just turn the day into night!

  • When working with Sulfur (If you're asthmatic, or have other respiratory issues) It's important to wear a respirator or something else to filter the particulates from the air.

  • 6:06 --- Thermites can burn at nearly 2600ºC. Silicon melts at 1400ºC. Guess again.

  • @dayknowsalchemy The key word being 'can.' Reaction temperature is different for different compositions of thermite (it's not all the same as iron oxide), and lots of factors can affect it further. My sand was not pure SiO2, so impurities would hinder the reaction and lower the temperature. Heat is also rapidly lost to the surroundings.

  • @dayknowsalchemy You're stupid.

  • the grass is on FIRE !!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • woah. the aspect ratio of that camera is crazy. talk about lens size...

  • Sweet!

  • What does silicon metal do

  • @skraninja you eat it and it gives you superpowers

  • Was that just the camera adjusting to what it thought was a very bright day? haha

  • IT MAID IT NIGHT TIME

  • When I first saw this video I was like "fuck yes! Fianally an awesome piece of chemistry I can do at home!" (I don't know where to buy all the stuff).

The I clicked on the video and then felt sad because you need more than sand.

    MISINFORMATION!

  • u talk too much

  • I feel dumb now.. So I will act dumb, I wanna nuke something mow

  • Another way to make thermite from sand is to hover a metal detector over it. You will get hematite. A form of iron oxide. You know what to do next.

  • can i use glass? cuz its made out of sand too

  • @MrDannyArcher If you ground it down to a fine enough powder, probably. Your silicon product would be contaminated with the additives in the glass, of course. I used unwashed beach sand here, so mine was probably fairly contaminated anyway.

  • And then his entire yard instantaneously catches fire within seconds.

    A lone turtle survived.

    Don't ask how..

  • The inclusion of the sulfur makes this not a thermite reaction but a therMATE rxn. You will lose a lot of internal heat to gaseous products like sulfur dioxide. It burns quicker and easier but not as hot. Try baking a pure aluminum sand mix to get out all water. compact it and then get it started by melting an aluminum wire in the middle of the comp using a current. You should get better yield and purer product.

  • magic it turns day to night

  • "This really needs to be done outside" as hes inside :D

  • adverse ed for a certain strata of society!

  • IT SUDDENLY TURNED DARK.

  • where did you get the ingredients

  • I'm 75 years old and in my day if you wanted to play xbox you had to make thermite and build yourself an xbox. btw is this useful or is it just fun to make.

  • :p

  • R u a scientist or a geek

  • @reeper26000 Both! Scientist at work (I'm actually a physicist), and a geek in my spare time :)

  • Geek Shows were an act in traveling circuses of early America and were often part of a larger sideshow. The billed performer's act consisted of a single geek, who stood in center ring to chase live chickens. It ended with the performer biting the chickens' heads off and swallowing them.[1] The Geek Shows were often used as openers for what are commonly known as freak shows.

  • @mrhomescientist i think it would be cheaper to use plain old rust and alluminum. so you could save the sulphur for something else

  • @mrhomescientist so you do work with physics right?

  • @mechanoid2k Yep, I do programming work with physics modeling software for my day job.

  • @mrhomescientist are these models bound by the same physics we expirience every day. cause i was gonna ask whats up with the physics of something falling on the floor. its always a million miles away from where it dropped

  • @mechanoid2k Of course, otherwise the models wouldn't reflect reality and wouldn't be useful. I'm not sure what you mean - if you drop something an inch from the ground, it will end up an inch from where you let it go, unless it rolls around.

  • @mrhomescientist hehe i was just making an anecdotal joke as it seems when you drop something it always ends up as far away from where it was dropped and usually under something. with these models, can you alter the physics in the program (if you were just messing around with it). Like can you alter gravity or other laws of physics within the program?

  • @mechanoid2k Yeah definitely, the programmers put in the laws and associated constants so we could always change them. Make gravity stronger or the magnetic force behave differently, that sort of thing. It's all in the math. Neat stuff!

  • @mrhomescientist That is not necessarily true. Due to a combination of physicists, notably Schrodinger for coming up with the "Schrodinger's Cat" paradox(can go in-depth if you want), quantum physics has been increasingly unveiling the probability of parallel universes in which the 4 fundamental forces(grav. elect-magnetism, weak Nuc. force, Strong nuc. force) behave differently, which alter the physics of that universe. We can calculate mathematically how these physics work...

  • @mrhomescientist Simply put, yes, it would be very useful :)

    (I thouroughly enjoy your videos.)

PS, Why do you use a permanganate+magnesium to light your thermites rather than just a magnesium ribbon and a blowtorch? That is what I have used for many thermites.

  • @Spart248 Well I've had some trouble getting Mg ribbon by itself to stay lit until it hits the thermite. I've had it go out a couple times one me. This way might be a little overkill, but it works every time. Also using permanganate means I don't need to get out all the stuff for the blowtorch :)

  • @reeper26000 u mean chemist?

  • You might be able to get larger crystals if you first treat your beach sand with dilute HCl / Vinegar for a few hours to dissolve CaCO3 shell impurities and then rinse it and dry it out. I've noticed once treated like this beach sand is much finer and more uniform in colour, you'd probably not even have to grind it.

  • @HexJamXXX Yeah that's definitely something I should have done first, that would have given me higher purity and made my stoichiometry much more accurate. I'll do that next time for sure!

  • @mrhomescientist Haha, yeah I used beach sand to make a sand bath once and forgot to use acid on it first and nearly smoked the place out, lesson learnt! =-)

  • where do you get all your stuff

  • Very interesting, my only question is that now that you have this elemental Silicon, what can you do with it? Is it a good thing to use in other experiments or does it just look cool?

  • @CrazyGnome07 There's one very interesting one where you combine powdered Si with NaOH and a bit of water, and it produces lots of hydrogen and sometimes enough heat to ignite it! I've tried this but it didn't ignite unfortunately, hkparker has a video on it (one of the clips is actually my test!). Originally though I just did it to add Si to my element collection.

  • GREAT! Now I have all the tools needed to rob the First World Bank!

  • Right to bear* arms my b

  • Uh the right to bare arms is the second amendment

  • where do you get sulfur?

  • I love how the flame burns so brightly that it temporarily turns off the sun! xD

  • Hi, that's a pretty interesting video. I've one question - why did you add sulphur? Wouldn't only the aluminum and sand mixture do?

  • why acid

  • If that metallic silicon would be polished it would look like diamonds. Very nice. I'd do this kind of stuff, since I think it's really fun, but I have no idea where to even start, especially where to get materials.

  • Thumbs up if your either a terrorist or bank robberer watching this!

  • It got dark fast oh nevermind

  • I'm SOOOO gonna try it that is fantabulous

  • what happens when you combine iron oxide ,aluminum, magnisium powders (and sulper if needed)with your silicon sand would the temps be hotter??to cause a larger cristal

  • I have a great idea! First you'll need to be in a poorly ventilated room preferably a garage. Second you should get a beaker of 150g hydrochloric acid and step 3 which is the most crucial part of the experiment, you drop 500mg-5g of potassium cyanide into the beaker of hydrochloric acid. Preferable you would want to sit there in front of the beaker for a good 10-15 minutes. (results may vary depending on the amount of potassium cyanide used) if you start feeling euphoria it probably didn't work.

  • In a field of dead grass.. GREAT IDEA! just kidding lol, nice video thanks for the tutorial

  • That silicon is just beautiful :) It makes me want to do this reaction just so I can have it on my desk! Thanks for uploading :)

  • Why u wearin gloves pussy?

  • @emokidsbrother69 Looks like you've never heard of WHMIS.

  • silicon is not a metal!!

  • For Action skip to 3:00...

  • Jesus you have Very Large Hands my Good Sir!! lol!

  • All you need is aluminum oxide and iron oxide. Try mixing with some play-doh and you can make thermite bricks.

  • regular sand from the beach?

    lol thats nice.

Does this explain certain side reactions leading into the rotten egg smell in the first place (before U put it into the acid)?

Did U ever try to use pure SiO2 from scouring milk???

The scouring agent is nothing more (or less) than fine grained SiO2 of tech grade pureness. So this would be another sort of "Hardware Store Thermite"

like my thermite with plaster powder.

Very interesting video and greetings from Germany

  • Useful to start a campfire

  • how hot will it burn?

  • Nicely done!

  • fucking moron thats how people cause a freaking Bushfire

  • That's fucking amazing...that shit controls the fucking sun too!

  • Is that fire so shiny that it makes the sunlight look dark in real life?

  • "Thermite" requires iron oxide and aluminum. So how does silicon dioxide or sulfur fit into this? This is NOT "Thermite".

  • @needparalegal Yes it is. Thermite is a general term for any exothermic redox reaction composed of a metal powder and a metal oxide powder. Aluminum and iron oxide is just the most common one. Look up Thermite on Wikipedia, they list many different types.

  • @mrhomescientist but is silicon a metal? As I remember it, it is borderline metal

  • @mrhomescientist you do realize people can change information in wikipedia to what they want right? its not aLWAYS right some times but not always. but not dis agreeing with you just because when u get info from wikipedia

  • @delta614 I've found it's usually a good source, people can change things but other more knowledgeable people can also correct errors. In this case it confirms my own experience - I have several videos on different versions of thermite.

  • @delta614 Do you realize you're wrong on all levels? STFU and read the dictionary before ragging on someone- it says 'metal oxide'.

  • @TheDeduction you do realize i was just trying to say not to believe all info in wiki. but hey if u want to rage like a little kid go for it i wont stop you. and i wasn't "ragging" on it. just sayin so deal with it

  • @delta614 It was actually directed at 'needparalegal' lol didn't mean to rage on you (however I still think needparalegal was being a twat) - sure, anyone can change info, but that goes with ALL mediums of information- Wiki included but not alone. I apologize for the wrong reply!

  • @TheDeduction no problem lmfao.

  • @delta614 You realize that Wikipedia has about 200 moderators at all times who monitor the changes to articles?

  • @delta614 You do realise you sound like a fucktard, right?

  • @PieXNinja meh call me what you want. you do realize i dont care right? retard...

  • @delta614 actually you cant change it, before any changes are made there sent to people who check it over to make sure its legit

  • @mrhomescientist Silicon and sulfur are not metals though?

  • @mrhomescientist Thermite is the material. it's NOT a reaction. your information is flawed. look it up in an actual BOOK.

  • @needparalegal

Just cause you see a couple videos of something online it doesn't make you an expert on the subject ok? Quit thinking you're a chemist

  • @needparalegal I dont know about this kinda stuff BUT I DO KNOW THAT WHAT THIS GUY IS DOING IS ILLEGAL ON A FEDERAL LEVEL!.

Im not makin this shit up, It is illegal to make anything that consists with anything that can be made into explosives or anything of that sort.

I know because I have a buddy who went to Prision and spent 15 years there just making small scale charge pipebombs to blow up GrowndHog holes on his land because they were destroying his crops.

He's out now but still on paroll.

  • @LordZacknafien well then everything is illegal :)

  • @vkd96 Yes Everything in this nation is illegal or will become illegal!.

If you look into it the ZOG Government that are now in control of this country are pushing to vote on Banning Guns to all american Citizens who are non fellons so that they can control us more so we dont put up much of a fight on them when they decide to move in and strike.

If you realy sit n look into what realy is going on in this country you will see that soon all our Rights will be stripped away by the year 2035

  • @LordZacknafien guns i don't care about. lock them away!

but they won't stripp all your rights. they can't control a huge riot from 300+ million ppl with rocks:P.

  • @vkd96 I Myself Love guns and I collect them,Started collecting all types of firearms when I was 15 been doin it ever seince and I belive in the first amendemnt all AMERICANS have the RIGHT TO BARE ARMS!.

and also I dont think that 300+Million ppl with armed with pissant rocks n stones is gonna work overpowering Armed to the teeth Government forces that make up nearly 60% of the AMERICAN population lol belive me its a no win fight with Rocks against high powered guns n explosives!. :P

  • @LordZacknafien exactly, do you really think that all those american soldiers would like to shoot or hurt their own ppl that only fight for their own rights? :P

and if they did UN and NATO would no be happy... ;p so i believe stone = freedom in america :D

  • @LordZacknafien We live in a Police State. I could never have imagined it could get this bad, but it is now worse than Nazi Germany.

  • @needparalegal Of course it IS thermite. You can make many compounds that are thermites, but are rather exotic in comparison with the well-know Fe2O3+Al mixture (for example gypsum and aluminum mixture).

  • Nice video!

    I thought that silicon isn't a metal.

  • but will it blend?

  • i love how the camera tunes down the light till it seems to be nigh t:P

  • gah. i wouldnt be ANYWHERE near hydrogen sulfide. that stuff will kill you very quickly
