I don't think there was any secret, just put the bricks together like you see. I think that the back was part hollow to save bricks.

I don't know, I have a lot of sets but since they are all normal colors I might have got them from a brick bucket likes the ones you see at stores. You can also buy a bunch of lots of type of bricks using the LEGO(dot)com pick a brick.
